  1. Got a call from Melvin Davis regarding "Chains of love" by The Dirtbombs being used in the French Film The Diving Bell and The butterfly.

He asked me to do a bit of digging around for him and i found the track and a lot about the film

which looks very interesting as it was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and looks set for a USA release.

This is all good news for Melvin as he will be able to get his hands on some well deserved royalties

Not sure if the link will work below but if not copy & paste into your browser

    https://www.pinglewood.com/2007/October/The..._Butterfly.html

The Dirtbombs version is very raw and i like it a lot, they are from Detroit and the lead singer looks black as well.

Melvin sends his regards to all his "Soul Angels" in the UK and hopefully will see you in 2008

  2. This thread made me smile, looks like all the hard core collectors have ALL 3 COPIES anyway :D

I have , I know Tats has, its just one of those records that you just love. i also suspect we all bought them when they were very cheap !! so as we were not sure we just bough them all :D

    Rob

All Three were bought Via Soul Bowl

I must have another look at the Matrix to try to determine if the Test Press is of the Green or Orange Press.

I don't know how many Test Press copies they had,

I should have the List Somewhere where It was featured one week.

As I remember It, John was In close contact with Popcorn at the time.

  3. In the end not sure enough people care, lost £1000's on that over the time we ran it. Not moaning in the slightest, those that came had a great time and some stunning music got played, what more can you ask for.

    Dave

At the end of the day we put on events for people to enjoy themselves, but try chucking live acts into the melting pot as well.

Add in days taken off work, lugging sound systems in and out etc. We now prefare to do one off or bigger venues and are still looking to bring over individual acts when we can afford to do it.

Karens party cost somewhere in the region of £2,000 and all the DJs did it for free, including Richie Pitts, but what a fantastic selection of music got played ! everyone seemed to enjoythemselves and thats what it is all about.

We will keep on doing what we love no matter what happens and if we loose money along the way then we won't worry either

however when we did the Masonic hall in Worksop we broke even or lost money and they took a fortune over the bar, they them tried to up the room price from £200 to £300 ! Told them where to stick their venue and walked away sooner than increase the doorprice from £5 to £6.

Northern do's are great value for money and I suspect are cheap because we have always travelled to get to them, thus incuring costs of petrol train fares etc. Add the cost of the travell on to you door price and it about evens out to a "Local" p**sheads nbightclub.

(saving up for our next event !)

  4. Nogger is on here, but doesn't post much these days or just "lurks".

you can PM him look for Nogger in members list.

Talked to him at the weekend and he tells me he is retiring from the Nighter scene, well, knowing Nogger for 30 odd years I know the only way you'll keep him away is to clamp his wheelchair !

Karen speaks to nogger 4 or 5 times a week to check he is OK.

Any keep your chin up you silly old bugger !

  5. Great news to stop muppets cashing in on the great names and stealing their work /songs / etc

more like this to come i think,

Has anyone posted a link to Otis William actions in the USA against nearly ALL of the various versions of Temptations that are touring AND against VENUES that put them on !

    Worldwide action pending,

So promoters beware when booking "tribute" acts !

    Rob

  6. Well said Phil,

we have both known you a long while and I will never forget the look on your face when you walked into that record shop in Detroit to see myself Tats and Gilly already at the counter with PILES of 45s already purchased. :)

Karen will always remember the Good times she shared with yourself and Lesley at the many all-nighters we were involved in for hole in the walll soul promotions and After Dark.

    Don't ever deny your faith.

    good luck in the future

    Karen & rob :ohmy::g::(:unsure:

  7. I assume you are the one and only Kimbo, apart from the girl Kimbo I introduced you to at Wellingboro.

I'm Mark's brother. Used to live in London, and met you first at Lenny and Nina's wedding.

I used to let you bend my shell like for ages about the top modern tunes doing the rounds.

    Hi Karen.

Matt and (his) Karen have parted ways unfortunately. Well nobody could compete with the cider reds now could they.

    hi mikey

its the way i wrote it, i ment my karen had seen matt out and about, Sean Chapman

see's him alot and told us about the football. although we did see matt at Becky Shins 40th in Bath in May and they were heading for the play-offs i think.

  8. We've had threads about Ian Levine, Richard Searling and many great venues. But to many who's first allniters were Yate or The 100 Club, he was the man. Ian's situation means he doesn't get out much nowadays, but it would be nice for you guys to put up your memories and plaudits to the great man. Then at some stage, I'll get him to read it or send it to him. Just thought it would be nice to let him know that many of us miss him.

For many years he was one of my closest friends, he staying at my place every weekend that Yate was on and me at his every time we went up the smoke. He gave me loads of encouragement as a young DJ, helped me find tunes and was a alround top bloke. I always think of him as one of the most important dj's the scene has had, particular achievement, as he did not come from the midlands or north of england.

So come on lets be having ya.

Ian Clark, top bloke loved to hear him DJ whenever we ventured "darn sowth" or at the early Cleethorpes weekenders/ 100 club etc. got to know him quite well over the years before meeting Karen. I would say he is (was) a DJs DJ.

  9. Hey Kimbo. Great to see you on here.

Karen, thanks for the jogging of my memory.

Mike Snow. Whatever happened to him? He and Adrian (Matt the face) Mathews were inseperable at one time.

Mike Snow is living very successfully in the USA

Matt & karen are out and about regularly in the South West (hope he will be up on the 10th) but the Mighty Bristol City are playing really well after their promotion last year and he is currently "snitten" with them ! Matt is also known as "Adrian Mole aged 13 and 3/4

Very Special thanks to John Anderson for all the soul bowl packs we got in the West and Wales(xxxxxx).

Also I like to give YATE a special mention as it had and still has a big impact on this scene. After YATE had closed the scene in the west died a death, so the rest of this thread is for you ? Dave Thorley. This is a typed copy of a original West Wilts Soul Scene new letter sent out to all member. There was not that many of us including myself but we try hard to keep the west country soul scene alive. I hope this gives a snap shop of the scene in the eighties what it was really like. Anyone mentioned on this post or who shows me there membership card can have a copy of the original. Otherwise this is all you are getting.

    WEST WILTS SOUL SCENE HISTORY.

    November 1982

Club founded by Michael Snow, Adrian Matthews, Sean and Pauline Chapman, Kevin Poole, Mick Greenwood, Lisa Dore, John Phillips and Rich Lisney due to the lack of soul in the area ( Yate had closed)

    December 1982

First Soul night at Court Mills Youth Centre, Trowbridge. Good idea at the time but no bar and awful venue led to small turnout. The soul nights here continued until May 1983.

    June 1983

After a break we carried on with a soul night at Hilperton Village Hall which was a success even though the Trowbridge Police Force (Sergeant Nutland) thwarted our application for a bar. There was a little trouble from the usual crowd.

    December 1983

After a six-month gap a coach trip to the Bristol All-Nighter was organised. Numbers didn't come forward and the Club lost £27.00. But thanks to the usual crowd who made the effort (WHERE WERE THE Northern Soul Patch Brigade who never go anywhere but Melksham?)

    February 1984

Eventually another Soul Night was organised as Sean and Pauline (two founder members) were going away to Belgium for three years (look out for details of the first Belgium All-Nighters1) This night was a great success and has given us a good start for 1984.

More and more people are showing an interest in Northern Soul and we are glad to see the number on the dance floor increasing. Thanks to everyone who has supported us and we hope to have more regular nights at Bath Sports Centre if possible.

    Northern Sounds Available On Re-release.

We recommend ordering from Knees of Trowbridge as they are very helpful.

Dave Thorley, I The Treasure and Accountant to West Wilts Soul Club, Karen McHugh, there is a small matter of outstanding membership subs and I feel duty bound to try to collect them on behalf of our Club. Membership.

  11. That's four sentences

OK Headmaster Rimmer, The 80s in one PARAGRAPH !

How you doin' mate, you and Karen ok thumbsup.gif

We have been better....But the support from our TRUE friends is overwhelming

watch out for a post from Karen later on tonight on the subject of the 80s Scene

& I should have put "no glossy mags, only dedicated people doing A4 fanzine's as an excuse to sniff the Copier fluid".

    Rob

  12. Lost years of the 80s-In one Paragraph (edited for Mr Rimmer)

Most of the contacts were done on the phone to see where the other lost souls were travelling to that weekend. The odd advert in the back of (Black) Echoes, block adds for something special ie Ric-Tic revue or Stafford. Hardly any flyers in venues, No Internet, No glossy Mags, Word of mouth and open minds were king. Great times, a real laugh and hardly any backstabbing B*****ds ohmy.gif .

    Rob.

  13. the only time I usually see the term lost years or wilderness years of the 80's is from those who weren't there. I went to two all-nighters a weekend along with soul nights and all dayers during the 80's and like you Daz some of the best times of my life making some lifelong friendships along the way!!!! Many of the venues back then boasted healthy attendances, some not so healthy but thats no different to these days.

Hi chalky thanks for your kind words regarding Lesley.

As a young chick myself on the scene from 1980/1 I totally agree with the above statement apart from the one thing you have forgotten--The fabulous Bank Holiday weekends we shared 3 all-nighters and 2 dayers--you lightweight !!

    love karen Wigley (McHugh) :Dph34r.gif

  14. Just to remind people

    funeral details

    Thursday 25th Oct

looks like the pub is called "The Tabbard" on Valley Road

not a "do" as such but we'll get a CD player in there and have a drink and a good old chat

Quite a few coming down by the sound of things.
