HORT SYNOPSIS 1974. Power cuts, strikes and boot-boy aggro on the terraces. Flares,Chopper bikes and beer at fourteen pence a pint. JOE MCCAIN, 17 and restless, is bored with the flatline tedium of a life that seems like it's going nowhere. Enter JANE, moving to the beat of a music that Joe's never heard, a vision of loveliness who opens the door to a whole world of sound, movement and all-nighter dancing at The Wigan Casino - the home of Northern Soul! Swept along on this tide of pulsating dance and lust, Joe finally finds somewhere he belongs and the acceptance and true love he yearns for. Then, on the way back from Station Road, where he has been having secret ballet lessons, rather than boxing, he finds a kestrel chick. His best mate, played by Pete Postlethwaite, the brass band conductor and football coach tells him he's got a trial at Sheffield United and its his last chance or he'll end up down the pit like their Jud. While playing in an FA Cup semi final, suprisingly held at Uniteds own ground, he can't stop worrying about a bet he forgot to put on. His football career over, he becomes a stripper with some mates. The kestrel meanwhile, gets caught smoking at school and is given the stick by the headmaster. Stripping leads to a chance to be enrolled in the Royal Ballet school, and he becomes a huge success as a swan, dancing at a brass band contest held outside a hospital. His dad meanwhile, still has no furniture as he burned it in an unlikely North East Arctic winter and Thatcher wouldn't give him any dole, the cow. A heartwarming tale of stereotypical Northern folk. Didn't his mother die in childbirth and he was raised by a pack of ferrets ?-Both Top noch Steve I take my flat cap off to you Rob

Tim Browns column got brought up in a conversation with a close friend last night funnily enough, I log in today and it's a "Hot Topic" ! Having been on the receiving end of one of Tim's "Tongue in cheek" digs in Manifesto I can actually see the funny side, I once had a dig at him in Echoes, for a laugh, so all's fair. I do think the Sam vs. Tim right to reply feud is a little tiresome. Both men have forgotten more than I'll ever know and their knowledge about records and rare soul is truly encyclopaedic. Tim has always been a home bird, Sam has been out and about since the early 1960's DJing. But how many times have you picked up Manifesto and started to read either column and been met by the words "Before I start I must answer Tim Brown's / Soul Sam's comments in the last issue in which he states..............." So that's the first 6 column inches taken up, I also suspect it's a "Filioque controversy" so there will never be an end to it. I like both of them a lot, however to continue to write month after month after month takes a lot of doing. If they cut out the "Contra bonos mores" crap and keep on with the music and sharing their wealth of knowledge with the rest of us then I think it would make for better reading. Rob By the way I think Tim's degree was in Zoology, so that would explain his interest.

Bridlington Weekender Tickets For 2010
Rob Wigley replied to Rob Wigley's topic in All About the SOUL
Sent you a PM -
Yep I'm bu**ered too, mid range loss & the ringing, there is a range of noise cancelling headphones which can help many people when it starts driving them crazy, 2 weeks in Ireland helps as well as long as you stay away from danny & Harpo's "Do's" in Dublin !! No cure it will get worse if you don't alter your life style ! A hearing aid will also amplify all other noise as well, so we'll have to learn to lip read ! Rob

This is an odd one Can anyone who bought advance tickets for the 2010 weekender from Karen at the Bridlington weekender this year on Saturday and Sunday Please get in touch as we need to check the ticket numbers due to some Duplication by Bridlington Spa Box office. We have already "Found" over 200 ticket holders, but we are missing about 60 who's tickets need checking for possible numbering errors. PM us or Rob Wicks or see us when we are out-if you know anyone who bought tickets at The weekender who are not on Soul-Source please get their phone numbers and pass them on to us so we can check them. Pain in the arse, but better than having trouble next year-it will take 2 mins to see if your tickets need re-issuing, so please get in touch. REMEMBER THIS IS ONLY FOR TICKETS BOUGHT AT THE WEEKENDER-not from anywhere-or anyone else. thanks Rob & Karen

Attic lads will bear me out on this one, 90-95% of the Mansfield lot stopped attending Wigan around 1976-but when Wigan Oldies nighters started the general talk in the |Swan was Q "Are you going up Wigan" A-"Is it the Oldies or Newies all-nighter" -Q err "Newies" A "Nawww I only like Oldies"--( Dare I say it this included Jim Wensiora, Rob Marriott and Wack-who were regulars at the oldies but never ventured to the Saturday night -until Searling started getting brilliant around late 77/78 !) I thought this was a bit naughty from the sellers description of The Bootleg of the Tomangoes Welcome Bobbys Records. We have been collecting records for over 40 years through the evolution of the global black music scene. In 2005 we started selling on eBay basing the previous years of experience on future quality and client satisfaction. We also do records fairs all over Europe. All the items we sell online are originals unless stated, most of these records come from my personal collection which I have collected over the years, which in there time have been well cared for and am now selling off. and back on topic there were loads of these done on Ric-Tic various titles, done in the East Midlands to fund a shortfall of cash in a business empire !!
