There is a story behind this record at Wigan, Dave was mates with us Mansfield boys and in particular Rob & Chris Marriott Chris told Dave to "Get this F***er played Dave, it will be massive" and he sold him a copy on Linda for about £6-Dave played it in his "oldies" spots when in fact it hadn't had air time before--the rest , as they say , is history. George Benson "On Broadway" massive Wigan spin for Evo late 1977/early 1978--I must have sold 30 copies in the record bar at £3 a time UK warner Bros--they were all over the place in Notts & S Yorks at 20p a throw. They kept me a float during a 6 week period when I was unemployed prior to statrting on the railway !! Rob

If anyone can dig it out he is mentioned in a Frank Elson column in Blues and Soul, I seem to remember frank says Bill was a member at the Catacombs !!And well into the music at that time! It may have been in response to someone moaning about THAT line in Black Puddin' Bertha

Go to the BBC 2 web site--sounds of the 60s--its 1 hour 19mins into the prog. The backing is a beat ballard type thing--the vocal is F***ing awful !! I didn't know it though Rob

I found 8 copies in Subway records in New York in 1979-it was being played by Sam as The Carstairs c/u-I actually owned the record as a new release purchased in Syd Booths from Phil kingswood around 1975 -always loved it-they are the same as the scan. ps dont forget about the UK Grapevine release as well Rob

Melvin Davis was drafted into the US Navy--did his basic training--except he could not swim--then had his "Shots" (vaccinations for posting abroad) But he had an allergic reaction to the stuff they used and was excused duty and demobbed!

Ray Pollard--lost an arm in the Korean war

As a regular there, I have several "early" photos which are really crap-as Parkash said 110 cassette film and a 2 watt flash !! in 1979 i bought a 35mm camera with built in flash and got some really good pics of people-and some of the dance floor as well. i have cassette tapes-but we used to record over the tapes week on week to get the latest sounds. There was never enough light for a cine camera-so doubt if anyone did it-most were without sound anyway ! Rob

Ernie Andrews is a great record that you never hear these days and a bargain too !!!

Where's your reply Chris !! and on the subject of "misheard at the Casino"---I used to think Eddie Regan "Playing hide and seek" was "Way out at sea" (play the game of love) Rob
-
Booted after a couple of plays on the strength of "Wash & Wear love" which is a totally different type of sound. Never had an original-but bought a boot on here last year for £5 as I had heard it out somewhere as well. A Cleethorpes sound via Rick Scott ?? so may explain why so many knew it at Drax Rob

Think this thread has been mis-named, all points taken in above-Love Music was a Russ biggie and probably a "Discovery" "along comes Mary" was another of his from the same time. I think the thread should read records "Broken" by Russ-here's one-the most Wigan Pies eaten in one evening at the casino..... Paul Anka is a Russ sound, but not discovered by him. The dance floor was/ always seemed busy early on as well. But with the passage of time the records played by the other DJs Richard, Sam ,Gary, Pat & all especially in the last 2 years have in general, remained VERY sought after and have remained very hard to find. Where as Russ's you could probably still buy at around £5-£10 each The Casino was a WEEKLY all-nighter and very unique I met some great people there and had some fantastic times and I must say without Russ it would not have happened. And lets not forget Dean Parrish "I'm on my way" played at other places first-but forever a Casino sound! Rob ps when he played leon Thomas L-O-V-E I used to think it was called "Hello Vicky"

Wasn't Yvonne Baker a Richard Searling spin at Wigan ? Russ's "discoveries" you can list on the rear of a postage stamp.........
