  5. Out of fashion or Old fashioned ? isn't Sam nearly 70 ? Rob
  6. Do you still have your hair steve ? you,ve probably got too much "Soul" as well Rob
  7. Rob, Sam isn't the only one that can do that I see many dj's with the knowledge and ability, Ady Pountain, Lars Bulnhiem, Gavin Page, Bob Cosby, Steve Plumb and I do at the right venue. But of cause were not 'In DJ's' Plus any of the Spannish DJ's do this every time they play.
  8. mmmmm depends where your "Modern" alliance lies--also as Northern DJs now tend to specialise in one area and not dabble in both and visa versa. With the exception of Soul Sam I cant think of a DJ who could play across 5/6 decades of rare soul music-thus leaving the rooms split with no interchange .There is also a huge split on what constitutes Modern these days as well. We personally like all sorts of soul music attending different venues and patronising both rooms at events as well. If things don't change -they stay the same R & K
  9. Great record Ady- not sure who owns one in the UK now Steve Handbury had one back in the 80s any body got one ? Rob ps anybody want to buy a mint one with sleeve???
  10. Hi Melvin's just been on the phone to say he is "Live" on the radio Thursday evening between 5-6 pm Detroit time --10 -11pm UK time Live interview & playing live with his band He's saying hello to all his "soul angels" as well he's the link www.whfr.fm Rob & Karen
  11. Yes he was in the UK at the Skeggy Tent thing that member Golden 101 put on in 1980/1 ? I know several people that saw him "Live" there although the event was far ahead of its time for its day. I think Bobby never returned to the USA , but decided to take up a career as "The Jolly Fisherman" I think he's hiding in Donna & Daves cafe I WILL get to the bottom of this one day Rob
  12. bobby thurston b. 1954, Washington, D.C., U.S.A. Bobby Thurston hails from Washington D.C. Bobby originally sang backing vocals and played congas with the group Spectrum Ltd while at high school. Eventually he took over as lead singer while maintaining a job at the State Department. Performing one night he met producers Willie Lester and Ronnie Brown who took him to the Prelude label. Here Lester / Brown wrote and produced his debut album 'You Got What It Takes,' from which 'Check Out The Groove' was a UK Top 10 in 1980. The album contained Bobby's version of Billy Stewarts classic 'Sitting In The Park'. 'The Main Attraction' followed in 1981 and featured the popular 'Very Last Drop'. Bobby moved on to Willie Lester and Ronnie Brown's own label Mainline for one album, 'Sweetest Piece Of The Pie', including 'Just Ask Me' and 'Treat Me The Same Way', eventually released in the UK on the Hi Hut label in 1988. The album featured Al Johnson on keyboards and arrangements.
  13. Hi fuzz Just got a message off Ralph Tee on Facebook He says "Bobby Thurston died MANY years ago" ..... so we still need to establish where & when & how-like F**king CLUDO this one ! Rob
  14. Cant be as he had a massive hit with "Check out the groove " April 1980 and the follow up albums in 81/82-however SPOTP was re-issued in 1988.....so that might make more sense Rob
  15. looking good for us -but sadly not for Bobby waiting for Tony's report back It does seem incredible that a talented man of that size could just disappear without a trace ! with a sizeable hit record under his belt as well ! Rob

  20. Well what a sad day it was-but a corker of a service a real laugh from start to finish The guy conducting the service told it like it was -200 inside and at least another 400 outside-maybe more A larger than life person and the word "unconventional" seem to crop up more times through out the service than anything else, -constant feed back from the sound system whenever something was mentioned personal to Dean sent glances and laughs towards the coffin-when Bev was asked what it was like living with dean for 24 years her answer was "Shit" but she'd give anything for another 24 ! Even Deans last request was to have his ashes scattered at the place he was most happy-Wigan Casino-was met with laughter as "Its now a shopping centre" "How are we going to get away with that ! "the service end with 3 cheers for Dean hip hip horray" Even at the Talbot pub for the wake they had bouncers on the door as Mansfield most notorious were in ! A great send off RIP dean you used to do my head in sometimes-but I am glad to have known you Rob & karen
  21. Its in the "Things to be marked" pile Godfrey been on nights and nothing sinks in !! Can we run a book on this ? Dead "ODDS ON"--alive 10/1 and odds shortening.. I hope he's alive-but very much doubt it-and if he is why the F**k isn't there any new material ?? (Very last drop was a stunner 1) Rob
  22. Thats what i heard--but how do we know ?-heart attack again seems to fit the bill Rob
