I was on a train from Swinton last year and one of the "dancers" at the Blue Minx tried to dodge her fare --£2.35 by offering the conductor a £50 note, he said ok but she could get her change from Sheffield booking office in the morning--she soon found the right money !
Another one bites the dust is the Carpet Warehouse still there

Went past the Travellers a couple of weeks ago.
Now sadly flattened & used as a car park.
Not the "Blue Minx" Lap dance club anymore then Martin--are you sure you are not getting mixed up with Canklow ?

"‹At the time of building in the 1930s Brid Spa was deliberately built with EUROPE'S largest sprung Ballroom dance floor .
I am reliably told the previous holder was Blackpool Winter gardens.
Brid must still be the UKs largest permanent Dance floor, plus since renovation the floors are continuous throughout the building as well. I saw Oasis at Brid Spa and there were 3,500 people in the room, mainly on the dance floor in front of the stage.
Largest crowd at Prestatyn was 3,750 but when the acts were on they were crammed in everywhere, record bar, those 700 seat at the back and on the carpeted areas down either side-- its a big floor but possible only 2/3 rds the size of the Spa....

I open my heart to say a massive THANK YOU, to each and everyone of you who attended to say goodbye to Gary.
To see you all, really overwhelmed. (But to be honest, I didn't see many).
I am so sorry I didn't get to thank you in person, because I know a lot of you travelled many miles, but the pain in my heart just wouldn't let me. The Canal Tavern holds so many soulful happy memories in Gary's life, young and old. The music, the people, the laughter, that was Gary, and I just wanted to hold them to myself. We have laughed over many years (36) about the tales he has told me of you all, (and some shared). School and college days. His work and contracting days, (now there's some I cannot tell). His Friday night drinking mates, his fun boys trips away to Wembley, Ostend and Lloret. And finally, the music scene, which he loved so much, 40 years of D.J'ing and buying records. (By we've been to some grotty and good venues over the years). I would like to say some extra special thank you's. To Gary's family and dear friends, who helped me with Gary's final farewell, I will always remember them. To Father Augustine O'Reilly, the mass was lovely and very heart warming. To the Canal Tavern and Staff who has always gone that extra mile for Gary. The care and warmth of Armitage Funeral Directors. Thank you to those who donated. Total £709.26 which has gone to the Brain Injury Group in Goole (T.L.U). And a final big thank you to my dear children, our little Meggie Moo. You are all my rock. God Bless you all.

So very comforting to read the above tributes - A huge thanks to Martin and Rob for a very special Clifton & Thorne session at Scarborough yesterday afternoon, which worked so well as a very fitting emotional testament to the sudden loss of a great guy.
Sincere thanks.
Yes Nick, good to see you... we enjoyed it, just tunes that Gary pioneered or played and ones that reminded us of him.......I had to be in Scarborough at 11.00 am
so missed the funeral Friday....however I think he was with us Saturday afternoon ! Hip Hip ! Hooray !!

Just seen this, so sorry to hear this news, don't think there will be anyone this side of the Pennine's who didn't buy a record from Select-a-disc
be it in their Nottingham shops or via Mail Order from Canal Street.
RIP Brian

Following on from Chalky's post #55 above & copied from Facebook
I have spoken to Piddy , as all of you who know them will understand "devastated" isn't even close to how she is feeling.
She asked me to make sure everyone who knew Gary gets to know this sad news, so can you please just text out to everyone you may think of to let them know.
As Gary has died so suddenly and unexpectedly there will have to be a post mortem, although at the moment it is looking like a massive heart attack.
Funeral details will be posted as soon as we know them in the next couple of days.
I'm still in shock over this news, read the comments below to see just what a wonderful guy Gary was and just how much he meant to people.
RIP Gary.

Ady, there's an article somewhere where you describe finding these acetates "Within 1/4 mile of the 100 Club" is it in one of the Cleethorpes Mags ? and Ben E King as one of your favourite sounds / finds of all time ??!!
Where's Chalky ? He'll have it
