  1. READING DUBLINMAN'S THREAD....WELL, BEARING IN MIND THAT RICHARD SEARLING TOOK HIS BOX TO THE TOP OF THE WORLD STAFFORD WHEN IT FIRST STARTED, I PRESUME ITS POSSIBLE THE SPRINGER'S MAY HAVE BEEN A TAIL-END WIGAN RECORD LIKE SO MANY OTHERS THAT GOT STAFFORD STARTED BUT ITS PLAINLY OBVIOUS THAT NOTHIN'S TOO GOOD IS DUBBED OVER A SHORT FILM CLIP FROM WHAT YOU SEE ON YOUTUBE, SO ITS LIKELY , IN THAT FILM CLIP, IT WASNT WHAT THE DANCERS WERE MOVING TO. BUT THIS STARTED ME THINKING ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE THATS INTRIGUING....SO HERE WE GO!. BASED ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT SOMEONE WHO IS 49 IN 2010, WOULD HAVE JUST ABOUT BEEN OLD ENOUGH TO ATTEND THE CASINO IN 1981, HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE THERE ON THE FACE OF THIS PLANET WHO: TOOK A CAMERA TO THE CASINO AND STILL POSSESS PHOTOGRAPHS? TOOK A CASSETTE RECORDER ALONG AND STILL HAVE TAPES? e.g ones that still sound audible as opposed to muffled. WERE IN A DECENT JOB AND....COULD AFFORD TO PURCHASE A CINE-CAMERA AND.... HAVE GENUINE FOOTAGE....INCLUDING SOUND RECORDING? LOOK... WEVE ALL SEEN THIS ENGLAND, SOUL FUNCTION AND EVEN FOOTSIE ON TOTP! BUT, BEARING IN MIND OVER 8 YEARS 1000'S OF PEOPLE MADE THE PILGRIMAGE SURELY THERE MUST BE ENOUGH MATERIAL OUT THERE TO: MAKE A CONCISE DVD AND EVEN A GOOD HARDBACK PHOTO ALBUM OR BIOGRAPHY. SO....AFTER 40 YEARS, LETS HAVE A CONCENSUS AND GET EVERYONE IN ON IT...WOW!, MASSIVE PROJECT OR WHAT? WELL, THIS IS SOULSOURCE, THE BIGGEST WEB SITE PURELY FOR NORTHERN SOUL LOVERS AND IT SURELY CAN BE DONE. NONE OF US ARE GOING TO BE AROUND FOREVER YET THERE HAS TO BE SO MUCH THAT WE STILL DONT KNOW OR WERENT PREVIOUSLY AWARE OF SO THIS COULD BE THE MOST AUTHORITATIVE EDICT OF THE SCENE WE LOVE AND THE VENUE THAT CAPTURED THE TRUE SPIRIT OF NORTHERN SOUL. 2. catacombs dancer with graham jackson and paul derby, and a host of other names ive forgotten...oh, and my old mate steve powell who lived in goldthorn hill, wolverhampton where all thes people originated from and, of course, when they made the transition to the casino as i recall, no one had ever seen their style of dancing before and they literally blew everyone away!...some of the best dancers this country has ever seen, personally, i was in awe of them at the cats...if im correct , and im sure dave.k will back me up, jacko passed away some years ago? rob.h
  3. may and me didnt get to meet maggie very often but on one of the few occasions i offered to take dave to ludlow to do a set on sunshine radio and maggie met may properly then. it was a good hour/quarter drive so plenty of chatting great tunes for two hours, then the charlton arms by the bridge for copious amounts of beer for dave and andy.v whilst we brought up the rear on coke and lemonade!, oh and several baskets of doorstep sized chips!!....then back to london heights with dave leavin a smoke trail behind. its funny because the first time i took dave to the station the year before he witnessed me chatting up my future partner on the phone-in...how ironic is that?. will never forget either the train journey's from wolvo to london for the 100 club...dave was a godsend with the groupie tickets...£7 return? HOW GOOD WAS THAT?!...with ken,mr. preston, carl and a host of others. you guys out there witnessed her devotion to dave and the scene far more than us but on the occasions we were local we did see maggie with her man and we always had a chat....we both agree with this thread.....EVERYBODY OUT THERE, WEAR YOUR HEARTS ON YOUR SLEEVES AND TELL IT LIKE IT IS ....MAKE MAGGIE AND DAVE'S BOOK TALK. MAY AND ROB

  10. had a uk demo of ray pollard "aint that a sad thing" with no middle, scoured bag of records in attic and found a 60's pop record on coloumbia which just so happened to be a red and white demo....with a removeable middle...which i did...i then proceeded to attempt to glue it in with superglue, a side up....and in the process spilt some glue on the vinyl....OH DEAR!! tried to remove it with acetone but it dug a hole in the vinyl like a navvy diggin up tarmac!! rob.h
  11. major lance, roy hamilton, marvin jones( jack montgomery)....LETS PUT THIS INTO PERSPECTIVE....THEY HAVE A REPETOIRE OF SONGS THAT, FORTUNATELY DUE TO US HAVE BEEN TAGGED, IN THE MAIN WITH THE "NORTHERN SOUL MONIKER"....IT JUST SO HAPPENS CERTAIN TRACKS HAVE THE RIGHT APPEAL FOR THE DANCEFLOOR...and of course there's curtis, marvin and jackie wilson. rob.h
  12. by eck lad, can thee brush teeth wi'it as well? rob.h
  13. hit the nail on the head there big fella, PROFILE with those adds...IF EVERYBODY WATCHES IT REGARDLESS OF OPINION...ITS A SUCCESS ANY WAY!...more than the mindless junk that the youth of today worship. you know when you look at QUAD it looks dated ( which is what it was meant to be ) and the acting, in places is wooden but its a LANDMARK that portrayed to the world what the mod culture was about.to a mod... it was saying...LOOK AT ME!!. THIS SCENE OF OURS IS, WITHOUT DOUBT, THE BIGGEST CULT MUSIC MOVEMENT ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET AND ITS PLAYED ON EVERY CONTINENT, in the 70's the ugly scourge of journalism didnt do us any favours and tried to bury us as a fad...huh! and paul o'grady with misplaced reverance made us blush temporarily (cringe...oh no, not again! ) but as the dust settles again we relax, safe in the knowledge that the media has given us a more realistic and sharper focus, thanks to some clever marketing by....none other than northern soulies in suits with a substantial I.Q. plus, the compilers of cd s with attitude and sleevenotes to match....applause for ady, tony, tim and richard and last but not least, the sound emitted from the airwaves. so, weve had quad...now northern soul takes to celluloid....i used to love saturdays at the abc minors in walsall and a ZOOM and cheering on flash gordon!....THATS AN IDEA....WE CAN ALL STAMP OUR FEET FOR JENNY ELLISON WHEN SHE DOES A TWIRL!! rob.h
  14. ive not seen any trailer despite knowing about the production but it already seems that its delay in going to the big ( or small ) screen would suggest perhaps even its sponsors may have been a bit sheepish about its originality and continuity but ,its all about not judging a book by its cover. im no fan of shameless and frank were on radio t'other day and he sounded boring then but i do remember people having longish hair at wigan so thats a myth. tell you what though...when messrs. croasdell, burton and the dublin bhoy get on the stage its "the comedians" all over again...its good to lighten up!. rob.h
  15. hows the good lady?....crutchleys should be in the good food guide!!
  16. aye up ken, hows the pork faggot gravy these days? rob.h
  17. deffo not that barsteward garbage posin as pop music...last 2 1/2 generations brainwashed by utter crap and still they've got no roots. r n' b music originating in the deep south migrated to places like chicago etc rough n' raw, the artists who became our heroes brought up and fought way out of deprivation and did it best by translating it into music...blues set to rhythm. probably the label most associated with it is chess whose releases reached these shores via pye picadilly's r n'b series and naturally the uk chess outlet. curtis and the impressions elevated it to reach a larger audience and the earl stax/atlantic sound gave it a more commercial polish. thats my interpretation anyway....any takers? rob.h
  18. ady lad, any chance of a "champion" karaoke from you then?...download please?...oh and ive always been puzzled about the lead vocal on the vonettes "touch my heart"...male or female or orville the duck? rob.h
  19. this thread is becoming repetitive lads....just like the records....you see you're making another valid observation .....that in the 70's maybe we were all nieve....it was the thrill of dancing that governed our lives....after all thats what we payed to go in for and the fact that tunes were replicated didnt register with young lads and lasses who wanted the best adrenalin boost you could find anywhere on the planet( not drugs). so now we're all looking back with wiser heads and....oh yes...."god that got hammered didnt it?...wouldnt dream of dancin to it now!"...or as weve mellowed we think..." nah, thats not a bad tune after all and i might have a jig on the sidelines" repetition...do you get the picture? in the first 2 years the amount of records available was miniscule to what was to follow and if you caught my other thread there are literally 1000's of tunes that were also big at the casino but didnt take off elsewhere and subsequently dissappeared hence, the rare soul scene and the advent of stafford, 100 club, lea manor, soultown etc....bigger playlists, more djs more venues and more big ears listening out for "the repeat play"...another anorak trait? rob.h
  20. absolutely steve, nothing wrong with the fact they were being played in a bigger venue to bigger and even more appreciative audiences and a lot of first timers. it dosnt take away the fact these records were broken at smaller and in some cases, legendary clubs but with the influx of even greater numbers of people to the scene these, in essence, were new tunes....that is the only differential. essentially, and speaking personally, i would say richard was, on the whole, largely responsible for playing " wigan's own" and, thats thanks to john anderson in the main. rob.h
  21. mornin' dave, by gum there's some sharp brains about!....ah, but a lovely, glossy, finished little article would be nice on the burgeoning book shelf....oh bugger, now tell me there's one of them as well?! rob.h
  22. OFF THE BACK OF THE WIGAN SUBJECT, A NICE LITTLE BOOKLET IM SURE, COULD BE WRITTEN ABOUT EVERY RECORD THATS EVER BEEN COVERED UP....REFERENCE VICKY BAINES AKA CHRISTINE COOPER AND....YES, CECIL WASHINGTON AKA JOE MATTHEWS, BUT COVER-UPS GO WAY BACK, MAYBE BEFORE THE TORCH? DEFINITELY AT THE CATS, VA-VA'S AND BLACKPOOL MECCA....ANY OF OUR ASTUTE SCRIBES FANCY THIS CHALLENGE....OR IS THERE ALREADY SOMETHING SIMILAR IN PRINT? ROB.H
  23. what we call a "casino tune" didn't come into its own until 74 onwards, innaugural year was full of torch/wheel/va-va's/catacombs tunes that went stellar at station road. after that the discoveries and cover-ups gained pace resulting in some of richard's best powerplays including: VICKY BAINES - COUNTRY GIRL, CECIL WASHINGTON - I DONT LIKE TO LOSE, RITA AND THE TIARA'S - GONE WITH THE WIND, THE NURONS - ALL MY LIFE and my all-time fave, WILLIAM POWELL - HEARTACHES,SOUVENIERS......yes, the tomangoes, for instance is an awesome tune, no doubt but remember it was around before september 23rd 1973.....in the end guys, what matters is, virtually all of northern soul's greatest tunes and discoveries featured at a venue that was around at the right time and in the right place rob.h
  24. LUUUUVVVVIN' IT!...DEFFO FUNERAL TUNE.....AROUND LONG AFTER WE'RE ALL HOVIS....gone thru some boxes of tissues in this house!....oh, and jj barnes "im the one who loves you".....SUBLIME, SUBLIME, SUBLIME! ROB.H
  25. chooonz mate!, just one thing.........they'd better have american express...FOR ALL THE THINGS I CANT AFFORD!! ROB.H
