goes without saying, an artist who has NEVER made a bad recording and thus, presents us all with the headache of "CALLING IT". I'LL NOT BE UPSETTING THE APPLECART THEN, WHEN SAYING YOU CANNOT BE BIASED.......marvin gaye sits at the right hand of god....thats how revered he is. this is a human being who could turn his hand to any musical style without so much as a slight ( case in point) "its not unusual" hamming it up and still making it sound reputable,...the undisputed joy with which he reads "his eye is on the sparrow" portraying his homage to the lord, his respect for his african roots through the lover's rock/ calypso feel of "sexual healing". he blends, even now, into so many catergories. we dont share the love of the man and his music unreservedly, every generation from every corner of the globe observes his interpretation of how music should look, sound and feel long after his living embodiment has departed....his soul lives on and, his "SOUL" lives on. so im not for putting any particular tune on the line, although that is the purpose of this thread....the man is a law unto his-self, i love everything he did. what i would like to see is him performing in that great forum in the sky....bagsy first in the quque!!, although my other half is likely to beat me to it!!! rob.h

very articulate macca, and in summing up totally correct, no need for all of us to be falling over oneanother like a herd of dehydrated wildebeast scrambling for the watering hole....whats the rush to drink it up and spit it out like its something turgid?. ITS ABOUT THE 70'S.....NOT NOW. realistically this post ought to be adjourned until we all see the film....THEN we can debate its merits as a reference to the 70's. rob.h

most quality singers can manage a single note, but for a range of octaves woven together like a classicaly trained voice, they dont come no better than the late, great linda jones.....nuff said! rob.h

THE WORM TURNS DOSNT IT?....the silver fox would cover this up!. it would quite amicably bed itself into a crossover set....and so would the b-side of gloria's rendition of "reach out, i'll be there". rob.h

PLEASE dont miss the point here.....this film is about our innocense and naivety in the 70's....NOT NOW,...IF ITS GOING TO LOOK PLASTIC AND MAKES YOU CRINGE, THEN ITS BECAUSE THATS HOW THE 70'S DECADE PANNED OUT....THATS WHY WE ALL GOT INTO NORTHERNSOUL....TO ESCAPE REALITY AND DWELL IN "THE IDEAL WORLD" WE HAD CREATED. its taken 35 years for our scene to evolve, which it is still doing but in the begining it was still very much experimental. movieland has to make things a little glossy to sell, so the perception that some things simply didnt happen this way or that are irrelevant....you have to take it with a pinch of salt, so to speak. AT THE END OF THE DAY....AND WHEN ALL'S SAID AND DONE.....ITS STILL A BLOODY FILM!!! WHEN IN YOUR LIFETIME OR DREAMS, DID YOU EVER THINK YOU WOULD SEE THAT? IT WILL BE OF SIGNIFICANTLY VAST IMPORTANCE TO THE GENERATIONS COMING BEHIND US, WHO WILL TAKE THE MANTLE OF NORTHERN SOUL AND WILL POINT TO THIS FILM AS THEIR DRIVING FORCE, JUST LIKE QUAD ENGAGED THE NEW LEGIONS OF MODS....EMBRACE IT BECAUSE IT WONT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS. paul, sorry if i disagree....people haven't exactly set about de-constructing your stage production which, was highly successful and full credit to you( i presume im corresponding with mr. sadot?) what you did was put a culture firmly in the spotlight, on a stage where, it was shown to be totally acceptable. people looked at it as a PLAY an interestingly different slant on 70's life, focusing on a musical trend previously unrecognised by the outside world. what we have here, is a transition to celluloid of basically the same concept. paul, no-one's falling over theirselves to say what you did is twee because you saw the moment was right to connect with the theatrical world using something that following generations had not previously encountered, as a result the northern soul culture has been viewed in a different light and it has not suffered from adverse commercial exploitation, something we may well have been justified to fear. if the stage production is such an acceptable concept, then the fact a film portrayal has never previously been licensed, should prompt enough people to give it a chance at the box office...it could become a cult hit. WEVE NEVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WATCH A FILM ( not documentary ), DEDICATED TO WHAT WE, THE BRITISH, CREATED. just that fact alone should make a person's hairs stand on the back of the neck. as a playwright, your impartiality should be formost in your thoughts, these producers, whoever they are, are just trying to translate what THEY see....for all i know they could be 20 years younger than us and their parents may have been northern soul fans and as a result they wanted to voice their perspective on the scene. theyve been out and experienced it , probably spending many hours pouring over film footage and travelling many miles to get what they want...we shouldnt rashly pull out the carving knives and slice up the dish before it has been served. i like many, am just waiting to see it so ill reserve judgement and i suggest that in the case of everyone else, discretion is the better part of valour and as such, you should all do the same. rob.h

LOOK PEOPLE, ITS A FILM, NOT A BIOPIC OR ROCUMENTRY...bear in mind its a first and where films are concerned, there is always artistic license so...if some of the scenes are reminiscent of quad...so be it REMEMBER THIS....QUAD WAS THE CATALYST FOR A WHOLE YOUTH GENERATION WHO WERE LOOKING FOR A DIRECTION THAT WAS MORE SUBTLE AND COOL, UNLIKE THE RIOTOUS, UNRESTRAINED ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT STANCE OF PUNK. as a result modernism is very much an integral feature within the northern scene...it certainly didnt alienate society. unlike what happened in the 70's where naivety allow the press to exploit us, this film will make a statement that will remind the rest of the world that we didnt go away quietly and infact this film is created to remind the rest of the world that 35 years ago that northen soul had taken its place as the instrument of how to dance to and enjoy REAL MUSIC without having to fear you were foolishly following a fad. when it is released, its highly likely it will be arthouse fodder....WHATS WRONG WITH THAT....from where i stand thats where most intelectually minded film lovers go to see productions that defy the norm and are generally the one's that dont make a big noise at the globes, bafta's, oscar's etc....that dosnt mean there's anything wrong with them and infact i would say this is the middle ground that is appreciated by most film critics....remember this as well....STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN graduated from there and look at the plaudits that has recieved over the years, granted it was a documentary. THAT FILM WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME....we'll just have to view this film in a more light-hearted manner and enjoy it because it is a portrayal of what life was like for us back then....OR HAVE YOU ALL FORGOTTEN YOU'VE GROWN UP??. ANYWAY,....non of us are paid up film critics and these producers can only be guided by what they have witnessed now and, like us they can only watch the same film clips that we have done for the last 33 years to give them the background they require for what they are about to put in front of us. NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER....and if its at a film house or on dvd, watch it from start to finish and forget your inhibitions for a while..... rob.h

first i remember about it was the bootleg under the suedonym of eddie foster on in records, its relevance as a true rareity would, at the time, be lost on 99% of punters who would only be interested in dancing. i dont think the masses cottoned on to the idea of serious collecting until the 80's and the advent of record fairs, car boots etc and the reality that a lot of stuff was waiting to be cherry picked from jm and soulbowl, let alone going to the states. "do i love you"then, was purely a "northern" record like any other and the reference to motown didnt connect immediatly. its value in historical terms would only be confirmed when inquisitive minds discovered it was a missing artifact from the motown catalogue, hence the intrigue surrounding frank wilson, who he was in the scope of the motown machine and why this record has posed so many differnt questions over the years and will continue to do so. rob.h

used to possess a tape circa 74 with all the classics on( listed on "how many times" thread) the jewells anthem really made the hairs stand on end, 1000+ soulies clapping in unison to the 8 count break before the music blasted into its finale and the balladic intro to harold melvin's "get out", again regimented clapping......music really WAS celebrated then....how many nights and all-nighters do you go to where you sense that spiritual camaraderie....clapping in perfect time is as respectful as dancing but WHEN was the last time you witness a 1000 soulies all doing that?. rob.h

remember going to the casino on the occasion of the first dance competition and it sticks, vividly, in my memory that a girl won the comp against two fellas. she danced centre stage whilst these lads were throwing theirselves about, couldnt have told you her name though....obviously thats irrelevant now as we know the truth....something else i associate with that particular night though, was the appearance live on stage, of jimmy thomas and kenny bernard so the tradition of giving unsung heroes a chance to share in adulation began early at wigan. rob,h
