  1. definitely a scene....stands to reason, when the gordy conglomerate of labels were originally being harvested by the pioneering british traveller/collector, they were also picking up other associated detroit labels, but the thirst for more and the quest for more lead them to explore the boundless possibilities and the resultant riches in other major cities such as; chicago, los angeles, philadelphia, new orleans, miami to name but a few. its literally unthinkable that the scene could have nurtured, endured and lasted as long just based on the gordy output...as the saying goes.." man cannot live by bread alone", so, logically theorizing, if motown were the loaf, then the myriad of failed cast-offs were the crumbs that fell off the crust such as; okeh, mirwood, renfro, columbia, bell, amy, mala, buddah, arctic, gamble, big top, sureshot, duke, diamond, constellation, musicor etc. you could go on infinitely,but,.....at the same time would the scene beTHE SAME without motown? whilst its accepted how big a part atlantic/stax/chess played in the developement and acceptance of afro-american ryhthm and blues across the racial divide, its generally acknowledged that motown was the catalyst, the fuse that ignited the imagination of the 60's young generations......lets face it here......its whats in the grooves that counts and when you talk about detroit, they still are the deadliest - set the walls and dancefloors on fire - grooves any person on the face of this planet could be inspired by!!

  5. hi bro, great pics in the gallery, and im sure many more will appear over the coming days......what can anyone who was there say?, an emotive occasion?......the circle is now complete...its taken 36 years but the task of remembrance is now finished....a solid acknowledgement from the city itself to the heritage it has warmly recognised. wolverhampton was a hotbed of northern soul wayback and this is a seal of approval, something for all people to see, lovers of soul music or not....a statement that on this site, something very special occured. lovely to see so many turn up to appreciate this significant moment and, all being well, the express and star should print a fitting tribute tomorrow (12/7/2010), so get yourselves a wolverhampton edition or, alternatively, download it from their website!.
  6. when the aqua at hednesford " finished" the first time, little scotty played......ramsey lewis - wade in the water....CUMMMMMMMMM ONNNNNNNNN!!! NEVER FORGET TRENTHAM, a night, for which i compiled the entire main room playlist and neil rushton closed with "just say goodbye" - esther phillips....WOW! what a tear jerker that was. the wonderful lea manor all-nighter finished with al wilson's " ive got a feeling".....and the tears flowed there as well, 7 years of sublime tunes and countless hours of informative education about real soul music, thanks again, to tate, lynne & martin. note: you can still see the entire playlists for trentham and lea manor on mr. rimmer's SOULFULKINDAMUSIC website
  7. correct chalks, my copy is opposite monotone ( black with 2 white vertical bars) you got what it takes came out on london american in 59
  8. living in shropshire and having to travel, tells you a lot about this county, which is naturally very rural....you can count on two hands the major towns and although not the size of scotland its disadvantages are profoundly identicle. id have to agree with most here about the m62 corridoor and the notts/derby conglomerate, but as is the legend...northern soul began north of watford gap and the north mids/north west have always been the heartlands. the west mids has, up to a point, been a hive of activity...one thing is certain though, most of the dialects and their tribes tend to congregate in their own areas and a large proportion of people still dont travel great distances...this is probably the difference where the north is concerned, with a whole swathe of this area so densely populated and so many great venues, there simply is no need to put in the mileage/hours to get to hear the sounds that people want. because the heritage of northern soul is build on the history of pioneering clubs like the twisted wheel, va-va's, the pendulum, kieghthly okeh club, blue orchid, dungeon, samantha's, the golden torch, top rank hanley, blackpool mecca and of course, wigan casino,....aint no way the rest of the country could compete anyway. london and birmingham have taken a long time to grasp the nettle and if you had to put them in a league table, the latter still drags a long way behind the 100 club alone. wolverhampton had the catacombs and later stafford placed the top of the world amongst the elite ranks, but i feel even now a large proportion of the country is still marginalised,....every county of course, has some great gigs but you can draw a line on a map book across the centre of the country and virtually every town north of the line has something going on regularly and at several venues. northern soul of course, is universally accepted but in reality, the centre of the universe is.....the north of england.
  9. dave, there's a few books as you know, about the windy city and two of the most popular references are by david pruter, so you might find pics there
  10. sorry, never seen one in this format before, label grotesquelly misplaced....are you sure this is kosha?
  11. ive a genuine original and, if im correct, this is not the american format of the label...this is usually associated with british releases...it may be foriegn but more likely a boot....pete smith etc., will confirm
  12. whar a corking tune!! im well pleased hearing that, its a total unknown for me but wasnt that what richard was about?. if it wasnt for the fact he no longer has a garage full of tunes, heaven knows how many cover-ups he left gathering dust....(and, its not for the fact they were awful......thought id get that in before the anoraks chimed in with their twopenneth of vitriol), that maybe others close to him, have been lucky enough to accomodate in their collections. the man has left so many questions unanswered where cover-ups are concerned, but didnt richard just play brilliant sets in northern soul's heyday?. rob.h
  13. THOROUGHLY SPELLBINDING! EVEN OUR HAMSTER SAT WATCHING IT.....WELL, HE IS CALLED "SMOKEY"!
  14. :hatsoff2:HEAR, HEAR, HEAR!!!...I TOTALLY CONCURE WITH MY RIGHT HONOURABLE LEARNED FRIEND, WHILST THE OPPOSITION AS ALWAYS MISINTERPRET THE FACTS....ORDER,ORDER!! TELFORD & WREKIN PARLIMENTARY CANDIDATE
  15. i suspect not, as the bunny sigler lp that contains this and girl dont make me wait, amongst others, appears also on a bronze coloured label, distributed i think by parkways west coast operation. if youve ever noticed the parkway part of the company that housed cameo used two different label designs with different colours because they came from two different plants. as for why this unusual colour scheme was applied, i dont know....the next person to step up to the plate to provide an answer to that will be john manship, i suggest.
  16. just goes to show...you cant keep a good "cult" down....northern soul has OUT-FASHIONED, OUT-STYLIZED AND OUT-TRADITIONALISED EVERY OTHER MUSICAL GENRE. IT DOSNT HAVE TO GO UNDERGROUND TO PROTECT ITS SANITY AND SALVATION AS IT MAY HAVE DONE IN THE LATE 70'S/EARLY 80'S. the fact is undeniable, any other musical advancement as magnetic as 60's uptempo soul/dance music is NON-EXISTANT. ....THE TRAGEDY OF TODAY'S YOUTH CULTURE AND THE LAST 2 1/2 DECADES......LEARNED NOTHING......GOT NO ROOTS. WRITE JUNK, PRODUCE JUNK, LISTEN TO JUNK.....MINISTRY OF SOUND?...DRUGGED-UP JUNK.....FOR REAL "R & B" READ: NORTHERN SOUL!! SORRY IF I SOUND ANGRY WHEN I THINK ABOUT THIS, THE COMPENSATION IS, THAT MAGAZINES OF ALL CALIBRES ARE TURNING TO OUR SCENE TO TALK ABOUT MUSIC THEY CAN RELATE TO, SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY MUST FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT WHAT I AM STATING OR ANY OTHER SOULIE, FOR THAT MATTER....ITS THE ONLY MUSIC ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET WORTH LISTENING TO AND LENDING PRINTED MATTER TO.
  17. DO YOU KNOW, HAVING WITNESSED A SOLEMN OCCASION AS WAS MAX MILLWARD'S FUNERAL ON WEDNESDAY LAST, SOMETHING WHICH WILL RESONATE PROFOUNDLY FOR MANY YEARS YET, IT IS IN THE HANDS OF SOULSOURCE TO LIFT MY SPIRITS AND, I HAVE TO SAY, I HAVE WILTED IN THE LAST 30 MINUTES CATCHING UP ON THIS THREAD, UNDER THREAT OF THE DEADLY BELLY-LAUGH AT THE ACRIMONY WHICH HAS BEEN FLUNG WITH GAY ABANDONMENT FROM ALL QUARTERS....ONLY THE TEAR DUCTS HAVE FAILED TO REACT!. ONLY US BRITISH COULD ARGUE SO VOCIFROUSLY AMONGST EACH OTHER, YET, I THOUGHT THIS PAST TIME WAS LIMITED TO NICKY CAMPBELL OR VICTORIA DERBYSHIRE'S ANTAGONISTIC PHONE-INS ON 5 LIVE..THOSE ARE TWO PRESENTERS WHO THRIVE ON SHOWING RED RAGS TO OBLIGING BULLS. THE VAST MAJORITY WHO ARE WAVING THEIR WHITE PAPERS ACROSS THE FLOOR OF THE HOUSE HERE, ARE, ON THE WHOLE, I SUSPECT AROUND MY AGE ( SLIGHTLY YOUNGER - SLIGHTLY OLDER), HERE!, HERE!.....YES, IT REMINDS ME OF THE PMQ'S, WEDNESDAY LUNCHTIMES AS WELL!!. ITS BEEN SAID ABOUT GROWING UP....WELL FROM A PHYSICAL AND METABOLIC POINT OF VIEW WE ALL HAVE OR ARE, AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO...ITS THE LOGICAL THING ISNT IT, OUR INTUITION SETS US APART FROM EACH OTHER AS MUCH AS OUR DNA. WE'LL NOT STOP ARGUING OVER THIS FILM'S MERITS WEATHER WE WATCH IT OR NOT, AND IF WE LIKE IT OR NOT....AT THE END OF THE DAY ITS JUST A FILM. OUR CAPACITY TO ARGUE IS UNQUENCHABLE, OF THAT THERE'S NO DOUBT, BUT TO WHAT END HERE?. THE VERY FACT THAT SOMEONE HAS ENDEAVOURED TO JUST " MAKE A FILM" REPRESENTATIVE OF A PHENOMENON MANY OF US ARE ASSOCIATED WITH, SHOULD BE GIVEN THEIR DUE, HOWEVER BEGRUDGING AND PERHAPS WITH THE QUOTE " WELL, AT LEAST YOU HAD A GO". NO, I HAVENT SEEN THE FILM YET EITHER, JUST SELLING OUT THOUGH, SAYS IT HAS AROUSED A MODICOM OF INTEREST, IF IT DOES GET A CHANCE TO REACH MORE OF THE INDEPENDANT ART HOUSES I WILL GO-SEE OR FAILING THAT, THE DVD AS IT SURELY MUST. IN THE 70'S I QUEUED ROUND THE BLOCK FOR " ENTER THE DRAGON" - LIKE SO MANY SOULIES DID....YES? ( UNASHAMED) BECAUSE IT WAS "CULT" I DIDNT ALIGNE WITH "GREASE" OR "SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER" BUT AGAIN THEY WERE "CULT"..... AND WHAT ABOUT "QUADROPHENIA"? ANOTHER IMAGINATIVE TAKE ON A VERY REAL SCENE THAT PERHAPS SOME EVEN OLDER SOULIES CAN RELATE TO , AND ANOTHER "CULT" FILM. LOVED BY THEIR RESPECTIVE FOLLOWERS, AND FOR ALL THEIR MISGIVINGS AND CRITISIZMS, STILL ADAPTATIONS THAT HAVE RESONATED OVER THE YEARS FOR THEM. SO LONG AFTER THIS FILM HAS BEEN CONSIGNED TO THE HOME LIBRARY, IT WILL HAVE DONE WHAT IT HAD INTENDED, EVEN WITH ALL THE ARGUING...IT WILL HAVE ADDED THE TERM NORTHERN SOUL TO BRITISH FILM ARCHIVE WHERE ONCE IT WAS JUST FOUND IN THE OXFORD DICTIONARY. AS A FOOTNOTE: PLEASE KEEP THE COLOURFUL METAPHORS FLOWING, PERHAPS SOMEONE SHOULD ADVISE MESSR'S CAMERON AND CLEGG TO REGISTER HERE AS THEY MAY CONTRIVE SOME COLOQUIAL PHRASES TO SPICE UP THEIR LUNCHTIME BATTLES WITH THE OPPOSITION!
  18. BY ECK OWD UN' THA'LL BE AVIN' T' LEVER OPEN TIL, NA THEN.....SPENDTHRIFT!!
  19. mike, do you think you could look into that and try and get some confirmation?, it dosnt appear anyone's denying that the sat 5th december gig went ahead. if winstanley or anyone to do with the management passed on even so much as a message, its possible that could be the reason why so many attended. ironically, it would look exactly like a monthly bill just like in wigan's heyday a few years earlier.....oldies all-nighter then regular saturday nighter but.....i have been hearing that the friday didnt take place EVEN though it was advertised in BE, because tiffs had been arranged to clash with it. for the sake of putting the record straight, this needs sorting out: WAS THERE A FRIDAY OLDIES ALL-NIGHTER OR NOT? AND DID SATURDAY 5TH RECIEVE ANY PROMOTION? rob.h
  20. dave, i mentioned in the original post that december 4th, an oldies all-nighter didnt take place despite its advertisement, but what you are saying contradicts this, although it was advertised in BE. having read replies so far, no-one appears to have an explaination as to why there was an all-nighter at the casino, on the following night 5th december AND how a 1000+ people heard about it and thus, attended it. there must be someone out there who can confirm THIS actually happened as well....but more curiosly, WAS it actually advertised by any means in a short space of 24 hours?. wigan tiffs was booked to deliberately clash with the friday 4th gig. richard and ginger also went on to run successful gigs in both burnley and todmorden around this time. marshall and winstanley secured a few dates from september onwards, but it appears they were not weekly and despite october and december for some strange reason, there is no recorded evidence of an all-nighter taking place in november, even given their desperate exploitation of a legal loophole that the council had overlooked. even though the building was unsafe and dilapidated, they still went ahead with the last death throes and as such it most definitely wasnt a fitting end, given that they had already conned everyone back on sept 19th....but a 1000 soulies would probably want to argue that case!!.....so it leaves an unanswered question even now.....unless the dustbin already knew he was going to run saturday as well and told the friday crowd the good news.....JUST HOW DID THOSE 1000 SOULIES FIND OUT ABOUT DEC 5TH?.
  21. sorry nev, its already called frankie & benny's!!
  22. buggar me sheldon, dont start the bhoy off again, you know what he's like with chapter 5!!. incidentally, someone mentioned about tyrone davis singing his name on several songs and so did eddie parker.....so how many others repeat that message?.....THATS A GOOD TIE-IN TO THIS THREAD.....WHO HOLDS THE RECORD FOR MENTIONING THEIR NAME THE MOST ON SINGLES,LP'S ETC.?
  23. here's one for the anoraks amongst you.....the final all-nighter, that never should have been, took place on december 5th, 1981....the all-nighter ( an oldies one) that was scheduled for friday 4th december NEVER took place. the casino was orignally scheduled to finish on september 2nd but due to a loophole at the council planning department, messers winstanley and marshall got a stay of execution, thus with the building in a dilapidated state the casino meandered on. advertising records at the british library, which contain the only existing and entire collection of the weekly scribe of the time, BLACK ECHOES, show that an ad was placed for the aforementioned oldies all-nighter, but when it came to pass that a rival all-nighter was going directly up against them, the management switched to the following saturday. here's the conundrum....bearing in mind BE was already carrying the ad for an oldies night,....and with BLUES & SOUL being a monthly issue...WHERE, IF ANYWHERE AT ALL, was the saturday night advertised?. the main protagonists, mr. winstanley and mr. searling have no recollections of it and, after 39 years, who could possibly blame them. the fact is around a 1000 people attended on that saturday evening so, how did they find out? through local radio?.....local daily or national paper?.....or simply word of mouth?....no BE or B & S promotion. JUST WHERE WAS IT ADVERTISED AT ALL?
  24. yes, seen it but a great part of our musical heritage and a fantastic tribute to chris blackwell and the many artists, he gave a break to
