  1. dont know why really, but as you do, a name pops up as im listening to checkerboard squares for the trillionth time. remember when it was covered up as bob wilson - strings a-go go? thing is there's a real bob wilson.....AND NO, BEFORE ANYONE GETS CLEVER, ITS NOT THE ARSENAL AND SCOTLAND GOALIE!, but his name is on recordings on sound stage 7, volt and motown so.... is he one and the same? did he REALLY record for motown ( e.g. b-side of festival time uk release " all turned on ") and, as soussan bootlegged the checkerboard squares, why did he choose bob wilson as the cover name? AND NO,...HE'S NOT THE DOG FOOD PRODUCER EITHER!!
  2. well, thats how it ought to read....but credit to collins for getting these guys on national tv, albeit bob babbitt and eddie willis...the real surprise according to the billing was the inclusion of raymond monet of micheal & raymond fame....that really IS a rareity in this day and age. i thought it was the primary responsibility of northern soul promotors to bring such distinguished luminaries to our attention, so saturday night prime time for a motown remembrance suggests the powers that be have had their memories jogged as to how good REAL music is, in the face of incessent reality tv. phil collins grew up in a generation that was a mod loving culture exposed to the ultra nouveau sound of detroit and the expression "soul" on the lips of the hip people and he, like many, frequented the clubs where british beat groups paid homage to their newly aqquired black heroes. whilst this show is produced in the normal slick, glitzy, sickly plastic manner that befits "an audience with" it has managed to relieve the stifling smog that is saturday night tv for an instant and recalls sobering memories of seeing the real deal ( the funk brothers) perform live in manchester amazingly now, 6 years ago and getting the chance to meet and speak with them. sadly here, no jack ashford or joe messina but, i guess their consciences still wrankle over money and fame even in their dotage....but thats another story. so yes, give phil collins his due, he's not only given his own popularity a boost, but he's graciously handed the spotlight to the very people who fueled his enthusiasm for the motown sound and performed the classics with them well:hatsoff2:
  3. billy sha-rae......on account of it being played, heard it a few times now in the absense of eddie parker!
  4. lad, i suppose youve touted morcambe on account, that its just across the bay from barrow in furness.....HOME OF.....SSSSSSH,.....YOU KNOW WHO?!!
  5. i had a v.i.p. copy that was double-a sided not white but multi-coloured demo, in other words ghost on both sides. the one you have pete, i must say is a mystery to me....never seen that before. quote me if im wrong but im sure motown did the same with lets go somewhere, also on v.i.p., appearing as a double a-side on the demo format and no different b-side.
  6. well mate, i'd say a good many have the 1992 dbl comp thats long since deleted on cd, virtually all his mercury stuff and these tracks aren't there so its a better than even bet these are veejay recordings and, if ben e. king's "gettin to me" is anything to go by, its a case of morphing a beat ballad into a mid 60's stormer that unfortunately for jerry, as with ben, came too late as the sound was considered dated then. what an awesome tune lying in wait if the boffins can unravel all the muffled distortion...bit like how they did with little anne?. i think that you must, by now, be thinking many people are saying the same thing...WOW!!! and deeply envious that you are the owner of something unique so, its got to be worth the time, money, effort and patience if not for the fact, its an unknown or missing masterpiece. GO FOR IT.... GET A MAGNIFICENT LOAN, BUT GET IT DONE!!!
  7. the sounds superb lp was actually available in 1973, i was at school at the time and remember a mate bringing a copy back from blackpool mecca so, 1977 is a discrepancy. release date for ghost in my house: 30/3/1967 both demo's and issues were double a-sided
  8. yes, i am fully aware of the two previous releases, factually however, this was his first chart for 4 years and, sadly his last. i would have to check the guiness book to confirm no.1 status for indiana though, im pretty sure it got to no.2 u.k.. prolific songwriter...one of his best,....7 rooms of gloom - fourtops and my world is empty without you - supremes. first white male to have a hit for motown here, in states, probably tommy good.
  9. little story about this record and how it charted. it was already a familiar tune to mecca attendees and latterly, everyone else on the scene circa 73/74. a dear departed friend of ours, blue max, was the dj at the catacombs in wolverhampton when emi realised its potential and announced its release. however, any chance of it charting giving motown its biggest commercial hit for several years, was going to be reliant on a scene still in its inaugural years. step forward max, who just so happened to be a record shop owner as well and, also djed at the lafayette club which, strictly speaking was a commercial night on mondays but always managed to get big name radio djs on its billing and radio 1 had the biggest of all. on a particular monday night max hosted breakfast show dj noel edmonds. during the course of events max played r.dean taylor.....noel was blown away having never heard of this tune before!, max promptly made him aware that, infact it was a new release that week.....as a result noel made it his "record of the week", the following week and the rest, they say, is history,.....the record got to number 3 on the national charts and gave taylor some belated recognition and a tour of the u.k. .....HOW SPOOKY.....AS IM WRITING THIS, ITS BEING PLAYED ON GOLD......SIXTH SENSE OR WHAT???....THE STRANGE WORLD OF NORTHERN SOUL INDEED!
  10. malibu's - i cant stand it - duke dee dee warwick - dont you ever give up on me - mercury anita hulmes - what did i do - roulette florence devore - kiss me now, dont kiss me later - pphi-dan mary wheeler - i feel in my heart - atom:hatsoff2:
  11. ditto your reply sean, just to add, universal repackaged her recordings on cd in 2005 inclusive of her 2 singles, the entire "great expectations album, 2 hard to find tracks from the "sounds superb" budget spin-off and, 4 previously unissued tracks from the archives in the process, retitling the cd as "love makes the world go round". richard searling featured its release on smooth that year and in particular, paid attention to the very smart "mr. loneliness", which is a good dancer:thumbsup:
  12. you dont need to worry about that dave....its a short stroll for you......with 2 record boxes on yer shoulder!!
  13. yes, licensed out. b.paris/y.baker - dbl a- side, bunny sigler and chubby checker...infact decca licensed at the discotheque and lets twist again by chubby a few years earlier.
  14. celeste hardie - you're gone
  15. I BOUGHT THOSE AS WELL, BUT I DONT RECALL SEEING A LIST AND I JOINED THE MEMBERSHIP ON OFFER....HAVENT HEARD A WORD SINCE, ALTHOUGH THEY ALSO ADVERTISED THE "MOTOWN DIVAS" DBL CD AND I ALSO BOUGHT THAT......FUNNY THING THAT,....IT WASNT EVEN GIVEN A FULL NATIONAL DISTRIBUTION (ASDA, MORRISONS ETC) DESPITE IT BEING PLUGGED ON THE POSTERS FOR THE DIVA TOUR WHICH INCLUDED BRENDA HOLLOWAY, CHRIS CLARK, KIM WESTON ETC. SO WE APPEAR TO BE EXACTLY NOWHERE!
  16. absolutely ian, looks like common sense is going to prevail at last!.
  17. too right pete, never will understand why this man made himself such a stumbling block and target for animosity...like i said, you cant take it with you and he didnt....hopefully the recipients of this treasure trove WILL appreciate its importance to an eagerly anticipating audience. rob.
  18. THE CREAM'S RISING TO THE TOP NOW!, AS WE ALL GET OLDER, WE MATURE LIKE FINE WINE AND NEIL, YOU ARE PRODUCING SUCH VINTAGE QUALITY THAT JUST BEGS TO BE BOUGHT AND READ. ON TOP OF WHAT YOU HAVE ALREADY PRODUCED, WE'VE BEEN BLESSED THIS YEAR WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF AMAZING PUBLICATIONS THAT JUST SO HAPPEN TO DIVERT THE ATTENTION LONG ENOUGH FROM THE ETERNAL PAST-TIME OF COLLECTING THE SHINY BLACK DISCS THAT THESE TOMES PAY HOMAGE TO. WELL DONE BROTHER! ROB.H
  19. thats ACE.....isnt it?!!
  20. august issue of RECORD COLLECTOR informs us that a selection of cds are imminent from the archives of the legendary cameo parkway label....could this been a softening of attitudes and a need for money by the previously resolute and stubborn owners of the catalogue?. if so, then about time....the people concerned must have had a reality check.....realising no-one lives forever and you cant take your money with you, even more annoying the fact, that they have deprived us for so long, of the tunes we want to have in our collections, in the light of the original vinyl being so scarce and in some cases, downright expensive. initially, a scan would suggest its beginning-of-era stuff, but hopefully it will culminate in the first ever legitimate release of a wealth of northern soul classics.
  21. there's been a lot of sceptisism on here, what with films and plays getting people's senses riled up. i find it highly amusing that comparisons with other publications are being made in the light of the fact, that this book is not yet on release and no-one posesses it to give a positive or negative view.....cum on people get real here. tim brown is as close to an authoritative figure where literal publications are concerned, as you will get. maybe there's a depreciation of what he know's because he is held in the same esteem as ian levine, and there have been plenty of campaigns waged against the latter.....how negative is that?. its easy to forget, but ian brought this scene, kicking and screaming into the modern world with forward thinking music so we wouldnt be reliant on oldies forever....aren't the rare soul rooms born out of this ideal?. tim's bible on valuations is always the first to be quoted, that comes from a wealth of experience and a lifetime of studying the scene in fineite detail.....and that's not withstanding the fact that john manship has always been there for reference as well. im sure the vast majority of collectors trust these guides implicitly. as a matter of friendship, i dare anyone to defy tim's ability to give as intellectual an account of the life and times of the casino as has ever been specified before.
  22. well, considering it states: 1973 - 1981 he wouldnt have taken on something as concise if he didnt think he could tell it like it is/was so my suggestion is, as with "soul boy" reserve judgement until you get the book. ive no inclination to suspect it will be anything less than evocative and informant...as for him ( or even me for that matter) being old enough...you'd be surprised....early doors?...mmmm...in a new venue (1973) how many people know anyone else anyway?
