  1. does it really matter what it costs?, great voice, great tune and....great memories of the man at the ritz 2002,...the originals one & only appearance in the u.k.
  2. here, here kev....need you say more?
  3. do you know what?........actually this particular discussion accentuates the obvious difference between the virtual world of pop music today and the reality of soul music as we know it......THAT THE BRAIN-DEAD YOUTH OF TODAY ARE TOTALLY INCAPABLE OF WRITING A SONG WITH ANY TRUTHFUL, HEARTFELT MEANING, AND THE ONLY FORM OF MUSIC WITH REALISM AND SANITY IS WHAT WE HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO FOR 5 DECADES OR MORE AND WILL TIL WE HANG UP OUR BOOTS!.
  4. ditto both comments here,...its a lump in the throat tune and o c's version really captures the essence "he married mama and took us in, now we belong to the man with that big wide grin" the passing reference to "the war" and how it had left the family bereft and then the happy ending, .....WOW! just a fantastic tune, great story and sublimnal orchestration.
  5. o'jays - looky looky, look at me girl on neptune, great philly production and of the 100 mph aegis....that initial phase as described by steve cato where you just stand and watch people dancing....this record seemed to prompt soulies at our local do ( the noah's ark pub ) to imitate fred astaire tap dancing but wow!, it was inspiring....subsequently, it was the very first northern record i bought ( 75p ) in 72 i think.
  6. here, here mate, if this is correct, its an absolute disgrace...impatience most certainly ISNT a virtue. lou has been trying to tie up a deal for a legitmate release but there's always someone who wants to gazzump the process just to make a dishonest buck, there ought to be swift retribution for this.
  7. after 5 o clock? and only on a thursday?......sounds like richard domar!
  8. its also on red atlantic ( uk )
  9. as good as len barry's version.....?
  10. WELL DONE DEAR FRIEND, TO QUOTE A WELL WORN PHRASE..."MISTER, YOU'RE A BETTER MAN THAN I"...well, i couldn't have done it!!
  11. im sorry if i insult anyone here, i prefer this sight as its SOULY about what we love to listen to and talk about...NOT to simply discuss who we are and what our personal lives are all about, let alone share it with 65+ million people who dont know who you are....so why do soulies wnat to be on facebook as well?. surely where our families and friends are concerned we have terrestrial and mobile phones, we can send texts, emails even good old fashioned letters...look, its not to say facebook was created to expose people to personal abuse, threats, trolls etc,...it happens in everyday life anyway. i certainly WONT go on it, wether its a good thing or not, why should i when i can use soulsource as my media outlet? i can talk to whom i want knowing that the site is the host to likeminded people who dont want to lay bare who they are and their life histories...if someone wants to leave theirselves wide open to unprovoked abuse and it DOES happen on there, then thats the chance they take...yes, i know that is relatively minor BUT it does happen.
  12. well, you see now, we have to different perspectives here,a collection of video's purporting to have amongst them the footage concerned and the bbc saying that this particular program dosnt exist anymore....so did they say it had been erased because actually they weren't bloody sure of the circumstances at all?, and that, even after telling tim this whilst he was in the midst of research for his book. i presume the sale of a large amount of videos would have attracted some media attention, therefore a report of it must exist in archives, and perhaps who the benefactor was...and even if it was possible to get to the bottom of this mystery, whats the chances of the footage being amongst the collection, a red herring?...back to square one again?. yes, its unfortunate that mr.clark posesses such a stubborn attitude, its not exactly like he needs the money...you're a long time dead and you cant take it with you...so to speak. r.s.g. just so happened to be one of the most influential shows of its era,the entire collection of which, should be abiding on all serious connoisuers shelves...and the same goes for one minute piece of film from the seventies that quantifies the media's opinion of our music at the time but to us...at the time, was an acceptance of the fact our music was there to be listened and danced to,..was the reality of what was REALLY going on in the outside world and, most importantly, struck a chord with disillusioned youth about the false glamour of pop of the time and provided an alternative outlet to go to places where likeminded people gathered and established lifelong friendships, all governed under the same banner....the love for a music that even today, simply wont go away because it sounds as refreshing and invocative as it did all those years ago.
  13. wigan maybe, but a host of different clips here, featured in the 2004 documentary " soul function"....and in COLOUR.
  14. you know what?....after 22,000+ reads this is POSITIVELY, the most entertaining read that for the life of me, ISNT A BOOK. simon has come up in many other threads on here over the years and the appeal for the stories of his exploits, are enduring. ive always thought id seen some action on this scene of ours but when one comes up against scribes such as mr. dewhirst and mr. burton ( to name just two ) i can put it on the back of a postage stamp. grey matter has to be stimulated 365 days of the year, no exceptions. drifting away from the scene for a short time is akin to the blink of an eye...do so and you miss it. these guys live, eat, breathe, sleep, drink northern soul. if anyone could put a best selling, glossy hardback together, complete with pics, i would gratefully rest my case with the aforementioned and their likeminded followers.
  15. picture blue?......the ink cartridge must have run out
  16. amazing isnt it?, a record such as don gardner, that exists as a mere handful of copies nowadays should be considered as a "mere swop" back in the day...i distinctly remember mick derry from chasetown, having a copy of cheating kind which he, more than likely, got off pep...and that was mid 70's...hindsight's a wonderful thing...if only...
  17. richard still has the acetate
  18. having attended the catacombs myself, i feel fairly confident in also stating that, without exemption, saturday nights were about featuring untried, untested and relatively unheard material...its not within the realms of impossibility that pep may have aqquired a copy of this record, as in 74, i remember he along with john tryce was making a concerted effort to collect all things detroit. infact, when blue max initially retired and sold his collection, on numerous occasions i witnessed this pair going through his sales pulling out a lot of detroit stuff. as for the suggestion that he had played it at the catacombs....extremely doubtful, bearing in mind attendances would have been significantly sparce ( and how many cats rats alive today can claim to have heard it? ) in light of competition from blackpool mecca and the knell of doom called wigan casino...the club in temple street, shutting its doors, 13th july 1974....and also any attention payed to this tune between then and 1978 is non-existant, prior to richard's exposure at the casino. im sorry but i wholeheartedly disagree with misinformation.....the history books tell this was one of richard's finest hours, albeit the formers gratitude to one john anderson for provision, nevertheless it was probably the catalyst for the return of quality music to the playlist in the 3 years that proved to be the casino's last hurrah.
  19. sir, you DEFINITELY need to do that book, no holds barred!!...when it comes to detroit in THIS country...the word ANORAK springs to mind and, fresh off the back of barney ale's contribution, we'd be absolutely spoiled!!
  20. ian did have quite a large family, brothers & sisters etc, i think he originally moved from stourbridge or somewhere in that region and supposedly most of them still reside there. he moved houses several times whilst living in wolverhampton, always remaining private but to a select few friends. the first record shop he set up was in walsall, in stafford street, always amazing tunes...i used to spend every lunch time in there when i worked in the town. of course there were a number of record shops and great junk shops in walsall during the early/mis 70's. i remember when neil rushton opened his first floor premises in lichfield street, he'd been there a short while when he came back from the states with an absolute motherlode of tunes, many in 50's & 25 counts....again tripping over stuff!!
  21. he had the old co-op store in 82-83, then the last shop was in queen street, think it was called watchdog but mick will correct me on that one. the coop was amazing...it had a huge cellar which ian duely filled with all the record collections he had purchased over the years.....it REALLY WAS a CELLAR FULL OF SOUL & every other genre you could imagine, there wasnt an inch of floor space...you could literally have to walk over records. however, the one nestled between the grand & vic was the place to be in its heyday...all those brilliant releases, in particular from the late 70's/early 80's...ian got them on their release dates...many of them now are collectors items and gone on to be massive tunes but back then you would pay the going rate...£1 for most of them.
  22. ah,...whatever happened to monty python?....sliced in two wi' breadknife....lick t'sesspit clean e.t.c....by eck, they were happy days, appen? skived off school to watch this film 3 days in a row !
  23. is it going to be goosebump time then?,.......not knowing what she's going to sing from a near 5 decade repetoire? clean up woman - shoorah, - where is the love, - this mane of mine etc?....BE HONEST.....SHE COULD HAVE DONE THE WHOLE SHOW FOR HIM!!!
  24. which page best to look on mike?, bearing in mind there's 7 it could take some time
  25. anyone see the review/feature this morning and who presented article about it? are we any closer to know when the film will be finished/released?,....tried to ff the itv player but those bloody adverts are a pain in the arse...what time was it on?
