Yes, i rate Ashton Uky as a 5* function because quite simply, IT IS!. Shirley and me weren't the only contingent from " the noisy neighbours over t'hills " πŸ˜‰ and i dare say a few more from elsewhere that dont originate in the red rose county. Nevertheless, likeminded folk congregate where the music is best....thankfully Chris Churm's magnet dosn't stand on its own otherwise, we'd never get in, it would be packed out solid. As it is, its always busy...and yes, folk tended to trickle in, initially, which turns to a torrent after an hour or so. We got in from before the off, got seated and then prepared...never to disappoint, this place..great atmosphere, cosy, friendly faces, lots of socializing and done in a manner as ive remarked previously, very reminiscent of Shropshire's legendary Lee Manor Hotel...its deja vu....dancers in seated area, chinstrokers/beer drinkers/crate diggers/gum chewers and general cogniscenti to the rear ( or in the Uky's case, dog leg right ) some records dont get a response...many do BUT....ALL are recieved with approval and applause...no dj is left feeling apprehensive if they don't see people moving.....its a very familiar scenario...just like 25 years ago back at that place run by Martin Bradley & Co. AND thats another thing Chris believes in: constant rotation of guests...BUT not always the same and infact, the emphasis very much on getting dj/collectors in there who will keep on offering up original and different playlists. It goes without saying, Grumpy comes with exactly the same mantra and type of dj hence, anyone missing this episode MISSED OUT. Phil D, Ian Wills, Joan, Tim, Phil T and Chris put on as good a session boasting quality tuneage that beat anything else going, on Saturday night...there's no issue with bog standard, this is purely and simply about making sure the tradition of offering folk an alternative to the run of the mill, is upheld. I couldn't fail to recommend this venue and its music to anyone, the advertising screams DIFFERENT at you and Mick Howard puts in a fantastic shift pushing it too. Well done to all concerned and long may it continue Ian Wills playlist: Emmanuel Last - Peace Loving Man / The Temptones - Girl I Love You / Danny Woods - You Had Me Fooled / Otis Lee - Hard Road To Hoe / Pat & The Blenders - Just Because / George Kirby - What Can I Do / Jo Ann Garrett - A Whole New Plan / Jimmy Wallace - I'll Be Back / The Rockmasters - Raining Teardrops / The Commands - Hey Its Love / Harry Deal & The Galaxies - I Still Love You / Al McArthur - His True Love For You / Harry & The Kayavas - If This Is Goodbye / The Falcons - Its A Good Feeling / The Peoples Choice - I'm Saving My Loving / Cody Black - I'm Slowly Molding / Venturas - Heart Of Love / The Moments - You Said / Cecil Washington - I Dont Like To Lose / The Trends - Thanks For A Little Loving / The Inspirations - Your Wish Is My Command / Just Brothers - Carlena / Gerri Hall - Who Can I Run To / The Tangeers - Whats The Use Of Me Trying
  6. Ffs, i'm not joining instagram just to listen to it....why don't they just goddamn post it here and have done?πŸ˜‰πŸ‘
  7. Sorry this is 5 days old now but exactly WHERE is the music clip to listen to?, ive clicked on the first two links and get a video of what looks like someones freshly cooked apple crumble!🀣🀣 PLEASE post up the music clip!!
  8. She gave it a try for sure...backing immense, that signature sax break from Mike Terry.
  9. Bob, We were both at The Manor niter in 2001 when Sam had just got the tune, and played it there...he didn't cover it up either...possibly because the chances of another turning up immediately was remote, that theory was debunked pretty soon that year...that was highly likely the first time he'd spun it out, heard it again at Manc Ritz bank holiday all nighter not long after, same response: floor packer.

Well actually Baz, this is infact, having looked at our calendar...a deffo!.... SO..extra busy November month with Saltaire " Nite Fo "....the Grumpy Collective don't half bring some cracking tuneage to the table...fireworksπŸ’₯ before the 5th eh?πŸ˜‰ Note for cleaners: PLEASE polish the floor?πŸ‘

Train of thought is Lancashire has the upper hand where thinking man's music functions is concerned, over t'hills at least one enterprising promoter is of the same ilk....i think a venue has to fit that bill in the first place, where people feel comfortable with their surroundings, that possesses a great atmosphere, a not overly big dancefloor and a music policy that, from the off, bears no resemblance to bog standard but instead, encorporates class forgotten oldies, woven in with proper collectors gems and more than a liberal dose of crossover. Soul in East Lancs was never gonna go away, Lowton has come and gone and in the meantime, the quest to adjust to an equally adequate home, has been achieved, no more then 3 miles south as the crow flies. And quality tunes are part and parcel of this venues continuing success story, long may it remain so.....
  12. Agentsmith commented on Bazm's comment on an event in Soul Nights

Top night in East Lancs again, with a foreign touch as well, Scandanavian soulful respect from Carl Hedberg and solid support from Baz and the resident crew...some top tunes from Bob Spendlove as well....just quality across the board music, bustling crowd, busy dancefloors in both rooms and lots of recommendations for the wants list again!, all despite a claustrophobic calendar with weekenders galore but..if its a case of wanting to not hear the norm, then Culcheth is the place to be!, thanks for another great saturday night out guys.πŸ˜‰πŸ‘

Bob, good to see you out again...have a chat a bit later bud, atbπŸ˜‰πŸ‘ always cracking tuneage here, carrying forward the east lancs road ethos of yore!

Today's ( Thursday edition 09/09/2024 ) Express & Star online preview of this weekends event, including a brief interview with Organizer/Promoter, Kenny Onions. I believe they may be offering to send a photographer to pictures of the event, possibly even film it, interview djs and guests alike and post a report up....may even make BBC and/or Itv Midlands news?....WE SHALL SEE!!πŸ˜‰πŸ‘πŸ“ΈπŸ“ΊπŸŽ΅πŸ’ƒπŸ•ΊπŸŽΆπŸ›΅πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§
  16. Agentsmith commented on Agentsmith's comment on an event in Soul Nights

JUST a few days away now.....coincidentally, this function is on the same evening as a number of events in the west mids, and Midlands area in general, and that includes established Soul night. We, on the other hand, differentiate..as its classed as a Mod Reunion Night, and as such isn't characterised by a bunch of Northern Soul tunes....the playlist here will derive from what essentially was played at the Skybolt and across the scooter scene.....a lot of that has changed across the decades so, expect to hear an eclectic mix from all the djs concerned. We sincerely hope we're well supported with faces old and new, in which case...see you all there!πŸ˜‰πŸ‘πŸŽ΅πŸ’ƒπŸ•ΊπŸŽΆπŸ›΅πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§
  17. Agentsmith commented on Agentsmith's comment on an event in Soul Nights

Supporting Tony and myself, we have 3 very experienced scooter function djs: In pictorial order here are Keith Morgan Stephen Richards ( Chevy ) Will Moreton, who stands in for Archie Tudor.

This is, amazingly, the original bricks and mortar...still standing today! ( dead centre of picture )....what used to originally be the West Indian owned nightclub..The Skybolt....its on High Street in Bilston. I'd looked on google maps and wrongly presumed it had been demolished. If you check out the web page specifically set up for this event, there are loads of pictures on there from the 80's when the mod revival was in full swing.

One important detail missing from the advertising: There is a bar, with a license extension to 1:30 am Not aware whether the venue has a kitchen to provide hot/cold food so, in the invent of no service of this nature, anyone who wishes to pop out to get a bite to eat, will either be given a pass or an ink stamp on the hand/wrist. There should be a cloakroom available as well.

Boogaloo, latino...the genre embraced as with others, early 80's by TOTW and other, by then forward thinking venues regards a change of playlists away from a one dimensional formula....this is one of the finest examples....it most certainly wouldve fitted into the hipsters dancefloor routine some 13/14 years earlier...had it been around....it got there in the end!

Well....how many versions of THIS?, a pick in recent years, attracted lots of plays, as has King Curtis....60 years on its still packing floors.
