Sunday Times Style Magazine article 3/3/24
Agentsmith replied to Frankie Crocker's topic in All About the SOUL
I couldn't see him singing ' Dearly Beloved ' could you? -
Looking forward to this, needless to say love the venue, great accoustics, right sized floor ( not a mass expanse ) adequate seating and a bunch of likeminded folk who know and love their music.....and dance to it as well! Riminder to mine host ' Our Bazza ' the superb floor needs just a little extra bite...called a polish!

Ah....Jools Holland's NYE regular...she definitely qualifies as being an old brit act...once a year on tv...could she sing " you dont know where youre interest lies " or " i'm gonna find me somebody " or " Gone With The Wind, Is My Love "? How about Billy Ocean? -

So many stand the test of time tunes that have stunning orchestral arrangements, in the main with vocals but top notch instrumentals too. If the concert orchestra have by now, got the gist of what this entails, which is quality interpretation, then the concerts should be worth attending..the organizers obviously feel its worth taking to the country as opposed to the capital always being the centre of any ideas...the Albert Hall has been done, there are tons of other great establishments so, perhaps on the back of the intial 5 arranged events, the tour will get extended to encompass other areas....provided of course, that tickets sell. Personally, i'm not bothered about having anyone belting out the lyrics, so long as the backing tracks are worthily interpretated. -
Andrew ' Mike ' Terry - bari sax break...or not?

In probability, that varifies it as a Detroit recording then Ady, and at his studios? -
Andrew ' Mike ' Terry - bari sax break...or not?
Agentsmith replied to Agentsmith's topic in All About the SOUL
That's certainly true, and applies to anyone!, its what you hear....to me, theres no question of deciphering who it is....it sounds for all the world like Mike, because nobody had a signature like that.....but we'll never truly know so, as already commented here, the jury is out. -

Yes, he did. Not the Andantes on backing though. Andy Rix related the full story about Margaret and this record, on here a while back, including an update...fascinating story. -

Plus, all the usual suspects, Simon...they in particular as good money seemed to be offered outside of what Motown were paying...Ed Wingate for one...if they were alive today, theyd be earning mega bucks for their services ( prime or not ) -
Andrew ' Mike ' Terry - bari sax break...or not?
Agentsmith replied to Agentsmith's topic in All About the SOUL
Thanks for the reply Dave, yourself and the likes of others have been immersed in research moreso, than the vast majority of us who learn as we go along....i'd ascribe to the notion that musicians, or whoever, get confused with time.....its so long ago and they were in demand every day, if they werent the type to keep a logbook/diary of their bookings then its easy to forgive them, forgetting what they did, with who, where and when. I honestly can't see that being Willie Mitchell, replicating a Terry trademark?, deffo confusion on Mike's part i'd say....yes, Mitchell was in Detroit then....there's photographic verification of that too, at who's behest is unknown? But thats my opinion and it cant be proved, neither can the theory its Mitchell either. -

Deffo agree with that Andy. -

I'm adamant its Terry....all and sundry wanted to jump on the Motown bandwagon, artists, producers, arrangers hence, the myriad of labels and sound-a-likes, and plenty of out-of-towners came to the D as well...i mean,Mitchell...reponsible for Hi, discovered Al Green, producer/arranger who had his own style....nah....thats Terry, all day long...when youve listened to Motown 64-66, his moniker is on everything, and not just at Motown. -

Thanks for responding Andy, ive posted this as it stems from a conversation been having this evening on the Funks site, where i posted the appreciations track. Rob Moss had put it up on his site initially, according to the difference of opinion on my post, Dave Moore said he spoke to Terry about the track....but so did Rob!, conflicting answers there too.... -
Dispute here: afficianados of Detroit, its in your court. Its been said Willie Mitchell plays this sax break. He was definitely in Detroit at the time. The belief is he plays trumpet on it...its said he produced and arranged the session at GW....does anyone believe that to be correct as well? This question though, revolves around WHO plays sax. To me, without any shred of a doubt, its Terry's signature, instantly recognizable the world over....tell me im wrong?

Video: Bbc Breakfast Northern Soul Feature 2024
Agentsmith replied to Source Team's topic in Soul Media
Well the dates have been announced for this ' venture ' were a broad concensus of knowledgeable soul folk interviewed with regards the selection of tunes, proposed for this ' tour ' or have bbc media suddenly become experts on a subject, very few of them understand?, 50 odd years of ' not getting it ' and tryng to tell us things about the music, venues, artists etc that we already knew or have long forgotten about. We dont do a ' Northern Soul ' dance.....we dance to Northern Soul, if we want to determine any name to refer to dance moves, its freestyle, always has been, everyone dances differently...its like dna, no two dancers are the same, everybody inteprets what they feel when they hear the lyrics, hear the music, feel the beat. Anyway, i presume these events will be ' standing only' as theyre going to want the audiences to join in and enjoy the music the way only they know best...and they will be filmed too? I suppose and orchestra has to be considered better than any tribute band or artist, belting out these classics, they say they ' love '...i prefer the originals...but, an orchestra should at least make a qualified attempt at replicating ' instrumentals ' At least go for something different though, rather than the tried, tested and thoroughly worn out. -
Week today then, second function of 2024, January kicked things off withStu n Rob from St George's..into a leap year Feb now and our first Lady guest for this Month, Ros, is looking forward to meeting all so, lets see the Shropshire crowd come out and give full support, knowing our regulars are as good as their word, plus always welcoming new faces/visitors from far n wide. Anyone fancy a stopover, good prices currently available via Premier Inn, Holiday Inn and both Travelodge's, plus lots of other quality establishments in town....Booking.com is easiest way to do it.

A pretty astute observation i reckon, Ted, given that Mark has probably had more aces up his sleeve than anyone else for as long as can be remembered, and when he has pulled one or two out, theyve been instantly breathtaking.....witnessed a few at Orwell reunion a couple of years ago, 60's as well....me n Baz jaw dropping like, wtf was that!! but, Mighty Lovers is just a mind blowing tune for sure
-
80's or 90's Mal?
-
Mal, the Clara Hardy...is that " youre after my guy "....havent had chance to watch the footage yet so, i presume you mean that tune?
-
Decca acetate. Referred to the Lea Manor ' last All nighter ' playlist i compiled...Butch featured it there.
-
Yes, i think its c/up title is " They Are Saying "...Mark has been playing it for a good many years now, as with Jean Carter as well.....big 100 club tunes even when i went there, early 2000. Mal...it is Jean Carter.

Job Opening for an experienced compilation researcher!
Agentsmith replied to Mark W's topic in All About the SOUL
Wow!, that long, i probably didnt realize at the time i bought it, it was that old....itssort of ironic in away...it probably came out amidst the mad rush of cds....companies jumping on a potential sales pitch goldmine with popularity of Northern amongst a wider audience, particularly all the rare tracks impossible to find, or buy on vinyl...available for anybody. 73/74 was a hugh vinyl adrenalin rush, where new tunes were coming at you, every week, it was hard to keep pace, that happened for a good few years, as it did with the cd market.....now both are far more sedate.
