  1. Just as an experiment I googled "northern soul" and the first page didn't bring up any pages relating to Ian Levine Productions. I then typed northern soul into youtube and it mainly brought up This England clips and similar and lots of embarrassing videos of old people dancing at soul nights. Now if I was 18 that would put me off more than some synthentic strings on a backing track
  2. I'm not very impressed with how some members have taken it upon themselves to torment Ian on this thread...so much that he's decided to leave. How many times does he have to be told that folk don't like his music, there's other bleedin threads on soul source-surely you only have to tell him once if you think it's all rubbish really? He's kicked off now because he thinks he's backed into a corner and he is defending what is basically his life's major work. I know he's a big lad and doesn't need me to defend him but I think that some people should be ashamed of themselves. He's done a lot more good than harm to the NS scene and I think he deserves a bit more respect.
  3. The Tom Jones single is brill, the youtube clip doesn't do it justice as I don't think it's the single version.
  4. You are allowed to have an opinion of course you are. However what I can't understand is that somebody like you (who comes across as a decent chap usually) seems obsessed with telling Ian how much you don't like his work. I think that it has now been firmly established that you don't like what he does. It's like Vic and Bob used to say "you wouldn't let it lie...."
  5. Pete you are becoming the wise old guru of Soul Source (well not too old.... )....
  6. I love live acts when done well with a proper backing band. I saw Kim Weston at Prestatyn and I have to say it was a bloody travesty having a legend such as her singing to terrible backing tapes when The Spinners the night before were afforded a full band. I have seen a lot of great acts over the years including greats like Curtis Mayfield, Edwin Starr, Bobby Womack,JJ Barnes, Maxine Brown and many more and most of them have been a joy. Seeing some of the clips on here as been equally wonderful...how can anybody watching Jerry Williams play the piano, tapping his foot away not be touched? And actually seeing the VelVets singing a song that I must have heard hundreds of times in the last 20 odd years made my day. I can't understand the mentality of anybody claiming to be a music fan who does not want to see music they enjoy to the point of obsession performed live The memory of seeing Curtis Mayfield back in 1987 will be with me forever more than any allniter or night in a working mens' club that's for sure!
  7. Yep Dave, I think that's about right...
  8. To be honest you could be right, I know one of the residents and he always makes sure he is there early doors. I dunno whether that is Andy's requirement or just that he wants to do that
  9. I used to get worried about stuff like this but nowadays I can't be bothered-if I have a problem with how somebody promotes their night or what djs are on (or not) then I just don't bother going. But to be fair it's unusual for an event to misadvertise like Stoke did this weekend even though they must have known for weeks that Butch wasn't playing. Although I'm not entirely sure that most of the 900 or so who go would really care if Butch was on or not. But for the few that do care it matters As far as the repeats are concerned I really don't understand why the djs can't leave playlists so whoever is on after knows what not to play if they haven't been there all night. How come you never hear repeats at Middleton, Lifeline or the 100? Is it because the djs are there all night or is it because the organisers make more of an effort rather than just playing anything because they think folk won't notice
  10. But what about crossover? We had a modern oldies thread the other month didn't we? Records like Stevens and Foster, The Pages and a lot of those records like Daybreak that are on the white Essential Modern Soul LP/CD. I absolutely love Modern Oldies!!
  11. Wow!!! Tony you are just showing off now!!! I thought of another by the way - Barbara Lewis Bet you've seen her too haven't you
  12. I'd love to see Chuck Jackson and it looks like I'm gonna have to shell out for the November Prestatyn again as he's on there next year..would have preferred to see him in March with Bobby Patterson and The Volumes but there you go! Jerry Butler would be great but I don't think he likes flying does he? Chris (Bearsoul) and Carlos saw him last year in the States and said he was fab!
  13. I remember Soul Sam putting the wrong side on once ...but it was the instrumental so he meant to do it.... Another time I was playing a track down the phone to a friend that he was going to buy off us and Joe my 3 year old wandered up and turned the record player off at the plug!
  14. he he,I won't ask you about the Stormy cover up!! Great times, would be lovely to repeat it oop north again wouldnt it!
  15. Aw!!! Big Hug!
  16. I dunno, he is in foreign climes, Milan...just for a change
  17. Steve Austin, the 6 Million dollar man
  18. When Steve first started Soul or Nothing we weren't that sure about the half hour spots but, for a soul night, it definitely worked. I can remember, for example, DundeeDavie coming down and doing two spots - one predominantly 60s and then a 70s one and it really worked! I think it really brought up and coming djs into their own-having the ability to play two different sets in a night really gave them the opportunity to play more diverse sets and the keep the night flowing. I for one definitely get bored if the style is same all night-some djs can definitely keep it flowing for more than an hour but some definitely can't...if it's gonna be longer than an hour you have to mix it up a bit for me
  19. Yeah I noticed a minute after..... very bored at work so on New Posts speed click
  20. I think Dave was actually saying that people do like mixed music policy nights-as I know he does But a lot of Northern Soul fans on here just like NS and nothing else.

  24. Phew I can't remember being so serious Had some great times, didn't go to that particular rally but the surroundings looked similar to many other places I went, dump of a venue, not so celubrious b&b (think cheapest we got was £7 a night in Brighton)...and absolutely loads of people! I'd forgotten how absolutely hammered the rallies were...and a great experience to be part of, probably the best ever We used to survive on about a fiver for a weekend and cadge drinks off poor defenseless young men like good old Si Cheeba and Steve Millington....happy days
