So someone got in touch with Kama Sutra in the US and arranged with them to have a few thousand pressed for the UK northern soul market??. I thought Ember had the rights to that label in the UK.? They pressed it with English labels (Im assuming its the 71 no centre issue as Ive never seen a US 45 with the typical English 3 prong which is on one of my copies)...so that makes the 71 3 prong the original and the no centre the US pressed custom pressed legitimate second UK issue....and wait for it the mispressed no centre custom UK pressing econd issue pressed in the US with the wrong track is the rarity....Who had it pressed then.It mut have been before the soul fox was around.

So its a UK Kama Sutra then...I bet some Soul Fox wasn't happy though even though he liked an instrumental...of course.I suppose either my solid centre or the no centre is a boot then.Funny that they decided to boot a UK issue though. So the number one UK soul rarity is an early seventies UK boot..............what karma

Can someone clarify.Wasn't the Billy Harner instrumental on a US only and they got sent back and destroyed..I've 2 UK copies one a full centre and the other without a centre.Will have to dig them out in case theres an instrumental (dream on...)

I'm sure the Oakland Chapter of the Hells Angels would have had something to say if the cast of Hells Angels were riding Jap bikes and wearing leather jackets with studs and BSA on them.Sonny Barger had an active input on the Hells Angels films so they didn't get it wrong.They also have Hells Angels trademarked.Who has Wigan Casino and northern soul trademarked then??? .I'm not asking the producers to recreate the Casino at Elstree (there's plenty of venues similar) but things like clothing,cars,magazines,badges,records,language,hair,furniture can be got right at little expense.If you can't get the bags that were used right and you stick it on the front of your poster/DVD cover what hope is there?. Who are they asking?What is wrong with attention to detail? If the producers are reading the threads who were their advisors on these matters??? Wheres our Sonny Barger?

Attention to detail and integrity.....whats the problem with that????. Well it would be an off the shelf non italian mudflap because the picture was taken in 76 and these are northern scooterboys from York who did go to Wigan Casino.You could have had a few of these in the film........but that is research... a dirty word??It shows you care and want to represent the time it was made and not throw something together willy nilly.So it doesnt matter if Adolf Hitler is wearing a digital watch in a film,that the Titanic is actually a tug in Hull.I would have thought most filmakers care about their work and want to present it as best they could especially with a historic film (which is what this film is ie set in the seventies).The first thing you see is the cover of this DVD and it's a modern produced cheap bag.How hard was it to source an original????It shows from the outset that the dirty word care was not used.Still no answer if they are wearing those holdalls in the film.There is no excuse for bad research with the worldwide internet at the fingertips.This may be the tip of the iceberg,Im waiting for them to attend the northern soul wedding in Frank Wilson watches and cufflinks.

I can think of about 7 off the top of my head,jazz funk ,P-Funk,Punk-Funk (A Certain Ratio etc),Deep Funk,Afro Funk (Fela Kuti),Jazz Funk (in a Ramsey Lewis/Bobby Timmons bag),Latin Funk,Brit Funk (Freeze etc).....any more..what about rock funk (Led Zepp/Grand Funk Railroadetc)..You can find funk in almost all music even Kraftwerk (check out Ruzruck)

Seems strange but the other side is definately Ben E King though.Bystanders is probably a cover so whoever did the original of that track is probably what I have got.Sounds like a black female singer with a girl group behind her. I know that the Dakotas did a version of I Can't Break The News To Myself (B side of Spider and The Fly) which I have got somewhere so the publishing theory is right and that it is an acetate used to try and get UK artists to cover songs.

Here we go then....this is trainspotterish.Quad witha better soundtrack.At 401 scoot cutdown.Never in 64........the best bits are at 437 with the guy in denim flares and some other scooter riders with long hair and then Tom Petch's blue GP (1970!!!) with fur around the headlight to try and mask it as a ???LI??.Check the paintjob (in 64???).Heres some pics of it. No wonder there are no close up shots as its called My Generation. Released in.....65?.Check out the bloke in the denim bags?? and then that cutdown as well.Some clubs painted numbers on the parkas on the back denoting when you joined. Theres a lad with a number 3.Not a 64 mod thing. The point is they did the best they could at the time....no internet/soul sauce/books etc. Theres no excuse now as the knowledge is at the end of a mouse click or e mail.It's these small things that make the difference between a well made and researched timeless film and what looks like a quick thrown together mish mash.I do like Quad by the way but only in small doses.There is footage from a regional TV programme that filmed scaborough on a bank holiday in 77/78 and the northern clubs were featured heavily. There were no mods left in London in 78.Punk and new wave were the thing.The producers got some original mods to teach the actors how to dance but they needed a mass of people as extras in the Brighton scenes.The northern scooter club scene had flourished since the early seventies and there were clubs dotted everywhere.The producers managed to contact a lot of these clubs and invited them down for filming....the problem was time had not stopped still for them.The scooters had changed and a series 1 or 2 Lambretta was regarded as grandad material and they all mostly rode GP's.The problem was that GP's were manufactured in 69/70/71. They needed extras badly so that is why you see a few GP's in the film....with fur around the headlight. Im sure Chalkys scoot was a GP and you can see Tom Petch's My Generation Lambretta on the seafront with fur around the headlight...good job they didn't look closer as it had murals.Definately not 64.Their clothes had moved on and they still wore parkas with beermats and large club badges along with greatcoats,Denim bag jeans and DM's.Perfect for riding in. The hair was longer as well and some even sported beards.Northern Soul was the music choice and long runs to northern seaside towns morecambe/scarborough.The scoots also were stripped down with no panels and brass/chroming to the engines.Some still had lights and mirrors along with metalflaking ....on GP's as well.....this is all the producers could get at the time.To a lot of these lads Quad was the death knell to a scene that they had been involved in for years and they saw it when they met the London and south eastern Mods at the first bank holiday at Brighton for the first time after Quad was released.The northerners were all on scoots and the revival mods came on the train....wearing 60's mod gear/northerners in Parkas, DM's and baggies.They could not comprehend each other.Gary Bushell wrote about it in an article called March of the Mods...he couldnt get it either as there was a mod disco and as soon as The Killermeters finished they all buggered off to Wigan Casino.He even thought that the rat symbol on the sidepanels of some scoots was allegiance to The Stranglers when it was the Scunthorpe Road Rats symbol.....I wonder if this will mirror what will happen on the northern scene if a big movie comes out.

I'm making the point that Quad was done when there was no mod revival,no internet,no books on the subject (apart from a short chapter in Today There Are No Gentlemen-Nic Cohn),sixties clothes (must have been pretty hard to source), scooters in original pre 64 livery (hard) so they made the best from what they could get.There is no excuse these days not to get details correct. Theres a million books on Northern Soul Venues/internet/ websites.Don't they want to do it properly and project some sort of credible film!! Im sorry putting some cheap and tacky red plastic bag with northern soul written on it projects that image.. a cheap and tacky film.They could have sourced an original holdall with real patches on it and chose not to......doesn't that tell you something.Cheap and fake.Whatever happened to integrity.At least Quad had The Who as advisors.Who advised the people on Sold Out? .Do you really want to see legions of 15 year old kids in baggies and vests this summer at venues requesting footsee?? There werent any real mods around when they did the filming which is why they had to recruit from the ranks of the northern scooter Clubs.York were one of the clubs and you can see Tom Petch's My Generation it it which was a customised GP(1970).You can also see a cutdown and the rider with a greatcoat on in the clifftop scene.Most of the northern clubs had been riding scooters and into northern soul from the early seventies and the fashions had changed which is why you will see beards, baggies, greatcoats,scooter club patches and GP's.There were no revival mods because there was no revival!!.The revival mods arrived with the first rally to Brighton which was organised by Mark Brough from Scunthorpe Pathfinders to celebrate the Quadrophenia release. The revival mods came from London on the train and the northern clubs arrived on scooters.They both looked at each other with suspicion ie (where did they come from !!).History has been rewritten ever since by mainly southern based journalists who think it all started again in 79.Heres Tom Petch's GP and some other pics......I got worried when I saw that bag on the cover of the DVD....Here we go a plastic bag with northern soul written on it........not a good start
