You don't get it.I don't want to hear R&b at a northern soul gig.I expect popcorn,mid tempo,doowop, ballads and some uptempo at a rare soul gig.Got nothing to do about being receptive.I expect to hear R&b at an R&b gig.I expect to hear a choir in church.I don't expect to hear a vicar playing Black Sabbath in church and telling me its the new gospel music and calling me unreceptive because I don't like it in church.

The average soulie knows little about R&B.Mass generalisation.I have thousands of R&B records.I like R&B.See my British Sue posts on collecting British.I like jazz especially British Jazz, Don Rendell, Ian Carr, Tubby Hayes,Stan Tracey,Joe Harriot etc.I don't expect to hear my jazz at a northern soul gig.I don't expect people to start playing Tubby Hayes and trying to tell me it's the new northern soul.Your comment we have our own clubs hits the nail on the head....if I want to listen to R&B I can go to one of these clubs or try the R&B room but don't try telling me it's northern soul or rare soul and foisting it on people at northern soul venues because it's flavour of the week.Oh and a sign that people are losing an argument is when they start calling other forms of music as "shite". There's good and bad.Geat debate by the way.

But youre an r&b fan..and you play and listen to r&b.Wouldn't you be pissed off if someone went to one of youre r&b gigs and played a set of uptempo late sixties and seventies northern soul and proceeded to preach to you that it was r&b and.....why are you pissed off with it.You lot are just dinosaurs this is the new r&b its called northern soul.

Come on Webby, don't know anything about r&b?.You never heard of Chuck Berry, Little Walter,Sonny Boy Williamson,Sugar Pie Desanto or Sonny Terry....it's the new RARE SOUL??? Forget good productions from Chicago and detroit based on the Motown template.Uptempo music that's great for dancing to.This is it.Play it out and you will be getting backslapping paludits for introducing it.I have some rare gospel music somewhere which I might introduce to the RARE SOUL SCENE.Got to make sure I'm the first to play it.I think I will get some deejays from the rare funk scene to deejay on the RARE SOUL SCENE.

Spot on post. Why can't these records get revived instead of giving needletime to novelty farmyard r &b records (Peanut Duck and Harvey) come to mind and badly produced screechy midtempo records.He has mentioned a very important word that seem to have been forgotten in the rush to alter the NORTHERN SOUL scene's direction DANCING......Lots of talk on this thread about who took what from the mod scene and how great it is to play it on the RARE SOUL SCENE...God the word NORTHE....NORTH.. I can't bring myself to say it.Leave these records on the mod scene.Leave latin on the mod scene.Leave doo wop on the rockin scene.Keep NORTHERN SOUL on the NORTHERN SOUL scene.Even Tim Ashibende has gone on record to state that Stafford went too far in relation to some of the sounds played there.I'm going to play my copy of Shmon by Mr Dynamite at our next NORTHERN SOUL do.Will I be getting plaudits for introducing this track to the NORTHERN SOUL Scene??.It is a great MOD R&B track and should stay on the MOD scene with hundreds of other great MOD/R&B/Popcorn tracks.Wonder how many flyers advertise RARE SOUL then tag on NORTHERN SOUL at the end as some sort of apology and how many are out and out NORTHERN SOUL gigs.It says baked beans on the tin. When I open it I dont expect spaghetti and sausages because Mr Heinz feels that I should be enriched and he feels I should be eating it.

Latin (go to a latin night) Popcorn (go to a popcorn night) R and B (go to a R and B night) Ah here we go Wigan Oldies.....and modern (same arguments trotted out yet again). Latin,Popcorn, R and B = A MOD NIGHT.....but why don't they call it a MOD NIGHT.Don't call it Progressive, Rare Soul,Northern Latin,Jazz nights.It is a MOD night.It isn't a jab either I like the music but don't call it NORTHERN SOUL.

So Roger Eagle didn't jack the twisted Wheel in because the kids were demanding uptempo tamla derivative dance music which formed the basis of the Northern Soul Scene. So the northern soul scene wasn't an amphetamine upper drug based scene then.People crashed out on mogadon and heroin listening to blues and popcorn music until 6am. Slow and midtempo were played all night at these northern soul venues. Cal Tjader,Dynatones etc were played all night and were representative of a whole nighter. The rare soul scene and the northern soul scenes are 2 different kettles of fish.The rare soulers condemn the northern scene of being backward and old fashioned and dismissing it as being oldies based.The "progressives" are condemned as playing crap doowop, rejects that were not good enough back in the day and not giving a toss about dancefloor reaction. BTW I do like rare soul and R and B along with latin (but my latin is Jack Costanzo/Candido/Fania Allstars/Charlie/Eddie Palmieri/Wilson Simonal etc).Check out my threads on collecting british ......but don't try telling me AC Reed/Charles Sheffield/Eskew Reeder/Freddie Houston etc are NORTHERN SOUL... It seems to be a case of some people wanting to change the template.

Northern soul is uptempo dance music of black tamla origin but can encompass seventies/eighties etc with the right sound.It has nothing to do with r&b,jazz,RARE SOUL,doo wop,latin,popcorn or any other trendy labels people want to call it.It is NORTHERN SOUL.There are plenty of gigs without the term NORTHERN SOUL on the tin as it is a word that is not in vogue. The current word is RARE SOUL.Do not be confused as this word has nothing to do with NORTHERN SOUL.Expect mid tempo,funky latin,popcorn and ballads.Anything apart from uptempo black music.Sometimes the term NORTHERN SOUL has bad connoctations from the seventies ie OLDIES.(Not moved on).NORTHERN SOUL are words to be proud of and not added to a flyer as an afterthought. There is history in the term that no amount of Adidas beard stroking trendy media glasses wearing beardos can steal or attempt to understand.

Theres also 2 pics from 69 I believe Inez and Charlie Foxx.Anybody name the venue? I was considering buying the DVD Box set of this when it was re released but the price put me off.Luckily all the episodes have been released by the Channel 4 version of I player.Each episode looks at a different facet of music.Theres an episode where Alexis Korner goes down to the Ealing Jazz Club but its locked up and he can't get in.Some good interview footage with Bo Diddley and the mad Phil Spector....people ask me isn't it lonely living in this large mansion with all these different rooms...no...theres a toilet for company,a washbasin for company etc etc.He has "issues".Heres the link https://www.channel4.com/programmes/all-you-need-is-love/episode-guide/series-1/episode-10

Think you are right. I've seen pictures of the stage with the piano and its in exactly the same position.Picture was taken in 69.I wonder if any of the crowd came back a few years later when the Allnighters started.Will have to try and dig out the Blues and Soul with Harlem Jonn in it who was deejaying northern years later.SWONS

British group from Oldham with a great taste in cover versions. The LP is from 69 on Fontana and features Looking For A Fox (Clarence Carter),Come Back Girl (Jackie Edwards),Open The Door To Your Heart(Darrell),Down In The Valley (Solomon Burke),Back Driving Beat (sic) That Driving Beat (Willie Mitchell) etc etc.Did anyone on here see them and can someone clear up whether the northern dj from the seventies who called himself Harlem Jonn was actually in this group.I was expecting weedy cover versions but they have a full brass section and Hammond unlike the other album with a northern connection which is the O'Haras Playboys recorded live at the Nite Owl in Leicester October 17th 1967.

It is the reissue.Total pink first issue,Island with (i) second issue, reissue yellow palm tree.Jackie Edwards I Feel So Bad is also on the red white Island original and yellow palm (reissue) but the yellow palm still goes for 40 to 50 quid.Got about 6 or 7 UK Jackie albums which I might post up in the collecting British section.Jackie was schizophrenic in his output with soul/pop/christian/bluebeat/reggae and M.O.R..Loads of labels as well Trojan/Island/Alladin/Fontana etc.Only got about 3 good tracks on Alladin,Prince and Princess and 1 Jackie Edwards track (Hush).His He'll Have to Go is a bit duff and an OK Owen Gray track.....over to Pete Smith re any other good Alladin stuff.Ive stuck a Jackie Edwards acetate in my last post on collecting British.

I was on it as well.Was it a dayer or niter.Whatever happened to Danny?.I'm sure Jim (R.I.P) was on it along with Liam, Paul Sadot and Oscar Romp.There was Danny Huff from Swindon as well who was a telephone salesman and record dealer.Nearly killed me and my girlfriend at the time when he thought he was on a dual carriageway and I had to remind him that was a bus coming towards us and he had better pull across!!. That was on the way to one of Adeys weekenders.Funnily enough the relationship with the girlfriend didn't last long after that.
