  1. Richard Searling!!!. You would have to keep the 100 Club open Saturday and Sunday nights. There's a common thread here "I havent been for" and I'm as guilty as everyone else.I go to Boogaloo, Solid Hit Soul,Va Va Voom and Capones although I do a few scooter rallies on the Lambrettas . I don't go there for the music though....not really into Paul Wellersjamsunderpants play the Small Faces or northern on CD.Some of it is a cheesefest.I mostly go to Soul nights though.Probably because the people I'm with just don't do nighters (Mrs/kids/work etc).Butch deejays other places so the exclusivity of his sounds are no more.Everyone wants to deejay and the records can be bought with the click of a mouse if you have the money. No rummaging through boxes at allnighters and waiting for lists through the letterbox and ringing Pat Brady or Soulbowl to be told ....its gone.Everyone who doesn't get the opportunity to deejay then opens up their own night more often enough based on the 100 Club template. There used to be a lot of mods come through from the mod scene (pre Untouchables) but that has died out. Most now seem to prefer psych/rock music. I spoke to an Italian girl at xfire who was dancing in the soul room. She was into the psych. I said what's the attraction to the psych. She said the music is exciting and the people are younger. This music is for old people but it's quaint....jesus where has the edge gone!!!The pre mod revival northern scooter scene ran along with northern soul in the seventies.Whatever happened to that. The answer I think is special guests who can pull a crowd. Searling, Clarkey, Colin Curtis what about Terry Jones or Chris Hill(might upset some punters) the night would be different and maybe make some converts........Simon Soussan (only joking). There's a lot of deejays I have never seen dance as well and who only go to places where they are deejaying. What's that all about??
  2. Not much going on in London!!!!!!. There's loads of rare soul nights.... Va Va Voom Boogaloo Solid Hit Soul Capones (Benfleet) Essex I know Towerful Of Soul The new Volcano Allnighter RSG Hemel Mind Yuh Business Crystal Palace Mousetrap 100 Club warm up gig. Hard As Nails Filthy Soul Crossfire Allnighter Madam Jojos Bisley (surrey) Ben Summers doo on Sundays Smersh nights... X Ray soul Top 500 (Buffallo Bar) Islington Theres a club in Hackney as well...name will come to me New entry-Brighton Beach Allnighter Hove Chelmsford Allnighter Gaz Rockin Blues This is all the old 100 Club's potential audience (apart from Bisley or Jojos). If these werent happening 100 Club would be full. How many of these have consistently packed nights apart from Solid Hit and Va Va Voom. All the customers are spread and the anticipation of the next gig is gone. The 100 Club was unique but it has been copied in soul night form.Everyone wants a piece of the pie but there's not enough pie to go round so people cook their own and it aint Mr Kipling. I havent even touched the surface of London and the surrounding areas plus there's weekenders/Mod doos/scooter doos/Foreign Soul weekenders/UK soul weekenders...the bubble has got to burst as the recession kicks in and maybe it will go back to a few allnighters in the UK again. Thats just off the top of my head. There was a time when the 100 Club was the only place you could go and hear such a broad mix of music in the south, never mind the UK .It seems the wheel has gone full circle and I'm finding it hard to find a solid uptempo niter with new similar sounds!!. This was a time before everyone wanted to be a promoter and deejay (and that includes me!!) and a time before the proliferation of soul nights. The customers are spread very thin and at a lot of the above venues the template is based on the 100 Club. There wasn't the proliferation of soul nights and a lot of people take the easy option....let's check this club out ,never been before,we can have a few drinks and be off by two. What about the 100 Club?.No it will always be there. If these clubs were not there and the 100 Club was the only place to hear the music then the 100 Club would be packed, but that's democracy.People get older/more commitments/kids and lazier. The ambience of the place is unique, even with the bumpy dancefloor. The 6am finish doesn't help.It was bad enough at 8 getting transport home on a Sunday.Just my thoughts. Theres always been tourists at the 100 Club but most of them were into soul music and were on holiday/visiting.Used to be loads of German/Italian/Japanese as well.Even the ones that werent into the music were respectful.People will turn out for special events/ anniversaries/Cross fire (although a lot of people who would have been to x fire went to Stafford) but regular niter goers are getting thin on the ground because of soul nights.Never went to the original venue before the 100 Club...was it West Hampstead and always wondered what it was like.I've even been passing through a few times and thought about it.Is it still there ??. How about a night in there.I know Clarkey has other more important things in his life at the moment but I would love to hear him out again.Hope you pull through.........I keep thinking of clubs to add!!! How about getting a dj from all of the above clubs and throwing a massive allnighter/dayer at the Rivoli in Brockley......
  3. What are the crossover tunes then.I stuck 1 or 2 enders in there and the rest are seventies and sixties uptempo stuff.
  4. Its easier if I photo it and post it up like I do on the collecting British Thread. There must be somewhere that plays this sort of stuff or similar without the r&b,popcorn, latin, slowies in the middle of the night.
  5. I'm sure I will find somewhere.........without the use of a tardis.
  6. As long as the Northern Soul Allnighters don't get cancelled. What's wrong in looking for the type of venue and music that suits your particular taste??.I'm still looking for my ideal venue although I found what I liked at Marton Manor in Middlesborough.Good crowd, friendly promoter, cheap drink (no broken glasses/spilt drink),deejays who were deejays and know how to programme music, hardly any talc (thank god...some of the people I have seen put talc down aint Wayne Sleep or Olga Corbett).I'm looking for somewhere else similar maybe closer. I'm not asking or much in music either. The basic Northern soul template ie late sixties and seventies with a smattering of newies in there in the same style to keep it progressing.I have loads of nights near me that advertise rare soul ie popcorn, midtempo,r&b but I will travel to hear the stuff I want to hear. It's not moaning and groaning. It's not just oldies either. It seems you get placed in the baggies oldies camp if you want to go out and hear sixties/seventies uptempo northern....with similar newies in there as well.I don't want to travel miles for a soul night when they are on my doorstep but I will travel for a good northern soul night/niter with good facilities/cheap bar and friendly people. BTW thanks to the people who replied on my last thread.I got some pointers.I was on the verge of posting up my playbox to emphasise what I was trying to get over but the thread was closed.I nearly got to the Barhouse in Chelmsford last night but the Gravesend ferry stopped at 7.30 so had to sack it.I will have to check out the Rochester gig as I'm there every second saturday. As I said promoters who went out their way to fire me friendly PM's and were honest about what the music policy is.
  7. The Free.....what a great tune. Its in the box. A failed Searling spin from 76 in need of a second chance.Theres a picture with him holding this with Kev Roberts and Russ Winstanley.
  8. Best of British Jazz Funk is a great LP...not sure if you can get it on Cd.Features Central Line/Freeez,Morrisey/Mullen plus loads of others. The vinyl copy is usually under a tenner and it's a double LP.I might start a brazillian or latin thread as I have tons of that stuff.
  9. Is this SKA/REGGAE or Jamaican soul....?
  10. I'm on to it Pete.Got my camera posed.Check out the collecting British thread soon.
  11. I booked Roger Stuart who I thought was across the board (whatever it means) but he ended up playing a full set of traditional Northern Soul.I knew where I was with Ian Dewhirst(He played loads of seventies/cleethorpes/Mecca sounds).I played uptempo sixties and seventies.Think I will advertise the next as uptempo northern soul and seventies and leave it at that. What do you call records in the same style that are not oldies though?? and will people think its oldies/baggies and the top 500 and CD's.It used to be so simple...
  12. I like the 100 Club.Started going in 86 but it was unique at the time playing rare soul,r&b,early mod sounds, mid tempo and out and out northern. The 100 Club type of night seems to have spawned loads of other similar sort of nights up and down the country but the 100 Club is still a few steps in front of the game.As I said there are about 2 or 3 in London at the moment similar that are great places but I just want a change. A place that is not necessarily only oldies either but who programme uptempo sixties and seventies.I'm not trying to be controversial...if I was I would be saying that is crap that is good.As I have said I was at Marton Manor up in the Boro at xmas and the music played was exactly up my street.I don't want this thread to get into a slanging match either.
  13. Adey had no problem with London oldies...it said London oldies on the tin so I knew what I was getting. If I didn't like it I wouldn't pay my £15 and go.I like Solid Hit Soul and Boogaloo as well but I just want to go to some venues where the majority of the music is uptempo sixties and seventies and I don't mean played on CD/The Top 500.As I have said I love R&B,Jazz,Punk all different forms of music but I went to Marton Manor in the north east and wondered if there were similar nights all over the UK.
  14. I do go to Solid Hit Soul...a great night but they play across the board r&b,midtempo and a bit of latin etc.Theres about 3 of these gigs in London that are alike.I like them but I want late sixties uptempo and seventies..not an across the board mix.
  15. Not bothered about travelling....and would prefer niters but dont want to get somewhere where I've been told its Northern Soul and find I'm at a rare soul gig which I could have had in London.....ie glad someone put me straight about Bournemouth that they do programme pocorn/r&b etc.I want a full on night of uptempo sixties/seventies.
  16. What is across the board.......does it mean everything inc r&b,popcorn latin etc though and does the rarer room mean midtempo.I already visit these style of venues if thats what across the board/rare room means. Are there any venues that nail their music to the mast ie NORTHERN SOUL where you can go and know what you are getting ie uptempo late sixties and seventies. As I said Marton Manor did it for me I wonder if there are other places with the same music policy.
  17. Went to Marton Manor last xmas in Middlesbrough. This was my type of night.Pure uptempo northern and quality seventies all night. There must be other places.
  18. Come on no personal insults.I don't want the thread closed down!!
  19. Yeah done Stoke but they are mostly oldies events. Is there anywhere similar who programme new stuff n a similar style amongst the oldies.
  20. Uptempo late sixties soul and seventies stuff. No R&B,Latin, jazz, mid tempo, popcorn.I usually get a clue if its advertised as Rare Soul then I expect Latin, R&b,mid tempo etc and if it's Northern soul I would expect the late sixties uptempo stuff with seventies but it does get confusing.
  21. Following on from Webby's highly charged debate re R&B.I've looked at the flyer gallery and I've noticed Quality Soul, Rare Soul, Northern Soul,Popcorn, Latin etc etc.I did a night in London recently where it was advertised as Northern Soul ie uptempo sixties/seventies dance music. Not necessarily oldies. Can anyone point me in the direction of similar nights around the UK.I don't want this to get into a slanging match re oldies....vests/bags/bootlegs CD's versus Rare soul....midtempo,popcorn, r&b,doo wop etc.I do go to rare soul nights and do enjoy them for what they are but I would like to get out to more Northern Soul Nights around the UK that play originals and lots of new sounds in a similar style and don't playlist r&b,ska, popcorn etc as there are at least 3 or 4 of these type of gigs I visit in London.
  22. "Whine like a bitch".You are obviously on the backfoot if it's coming down to personal insults.Nob is spelt with a K.
