  1. More wise words from the Northern Nostradamus..........Nov 2nd 1976...Any familiar rings??
  2. Thank god I don't promote for a living!!!.Imagine promoting to feed your wife and kids at the moment.Who does it for a living...Kev and Adey? any more?.It seems the cult of "superstar dj" has made an impression on the rare soul and northern scenes and everybody who has access to e bay and a bit of spare cash can have a go without leaving their town.If you cant afford the records so what....get down to HMV and you can get them all on CD.
  3. Don't agree.....used to go to Wendy Mays Locomotion in Kentish Town many years ago...smattering of northern soul, stax Atlantic etc.In no way part of "the scene".There's loads of clubs out there that are not part of the "scene" that play northern and rare soul/funk.This X Ray Soul Club in no way will threaten Solid Hit's night.Look at the pictures. I do not recognise anyone on that site who is part of the "scene". The "scene in London is Solid Hit/Va Va Voom and Boogaloo along with 100 Club.Rare Soul and R&B.It seems they have created their own scene!!!!Don't know about other parts of the country. Terry Jones and the Modern Soul Boys are part of a different "scene" and never shall any of these scenes meet unless its at the Modern Rooms up north. These X Ray boys probably wouldn't want to be part of "the scene".
  4. Wasn't it born when Dave Godin said it was born and didn't it die when Ian Levine said it was dead.See the article I put up from Blues and soul.It is a minority who bicker about music on websites. It can't be very appealing for young kids at 23/24 to start collecting this music and wanting to deejay and then entering the scene to find it's full of middle aged fat blokes arguing about that's an oldie/that's a newie, thats crossover, that's reggae soul.Looking at that X Ray Soul site they look as though they have really got their act together, great website, loads of young faces, women and they look as though they are enjoying themselves with no baggage. It must have been like that at the beginning of the scene.Loads of new sounds, great atmosphere......why would they want to be part of the established soul scene.Don't know if they have a regular audience/crowd or whether they are ovo or not but i bet they haven't got 30 years of baggage and they look as though they are having.................fun .
  5. Orig copy wanted.Vg condition okay (I'm going to play it).PM Me with a sensible price.
  6. It's a totally different audience. See their website.Loads of young student types.Think it has been running for a while but I think they have just discovered this site.More oldies orientated if you ask me.Maybe this is where the future young blood is.Don't even know if they are ovo or not.If they were serving up the rare soul that Solid Hit does then I think you would have a problem. It is getting to saturation point though and something will give.
  7. Even my mate is doing a soul night in Essex same night as Boogaloo Soul (ouch...said to my mate I would attend)......doesn't even do vinyl it's all on CD.I said why didn't you get some deejays with vinyl...reply it's only a local do they don't care if it's vinyl or not. This seems to be the attitude. If god is a deejay everybody wants to be god.
  8. Frank Elson is big on the Northern Nostradamus scene. These are snippets from the oh holy scriptures of Northern Soulus and pray to keep the faith and a pilgrimage to the Blackpool Mecca.......
  9. January 16th 1978.Frank Elson Blues and Soul.............we could be talking about April 2010
  10. Keeping you on the ball Pete....M ax Bygraves would have been too obvious and heres some more.
  11. Thought I would have a rummage through a few of them (before my time I may add) and found that the same arguments ie seventies/modern/oldies were being discussed then albeit in paper form. It's just transferred to the net. They seem like a week by week history of the northern scene as it was.Loads of reports on venues etc and even some pics.As Mr Deejay "Frank" has pointed out the adverts for clubs that plugged their sounds are fascinating.I really started buying Echoes and then found I was buying Echoes for one page in the end!!.Discussion on oldies and Pat Brady playing new sounds Chandlers in 1980/81 !!!! Oldies and newies were mixed and theres a good discussion on how new sounds should be introduced. What record is Chris Holmes pointing at??. Im sure Alan Rhodes ended up as a deejay on Radio Tees.I have an interview with him,Chris King and Eddie Holman somewhere.
  12. Whats the Christine Quaite and Joe Wilson like?.Is the B side to the Soulmates track You Got Me Hooked?
  13. Or peoples mates (or seller bidding it up)
  14. Was it Sad Sad Memories by........Im taking a guess The Souveniers???
  15. Obscure r&b all night...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz will push more punters away than it will attract and turn the 100 into a Mod night. And definately no seventies.
  16. Yes it was a joke.....lots of young people at the X Ray and looks busy. They have another night as well called The Soulful Shack so they must be doing okay. I wonder if they do ovo?
  17. When RARE soul rooms stop playing rocknroll.Heard some Teds have started to crossover to the Rare Soul Scene. You might be seeing these lads at events soon.............or are they oldies northern Teds......
  18. How about playing a soul record for starters or is that an alien concept..Forgot reggae is the new beat ballad!! ........MATTHEW HOPKINS SAYS "WHO HAS BEEN PLAYING SOUL RECORDS AT SOUL EVENTS....IT WILL BE THE DUCKING STOOL FOR THEM"
  19. Jim have you got Xdyisale......!!!! Maybe a bit of spell chekk.Soulboy....don't get me started. All the freakbeat mods with their John Inman/ Clarence (Dick Emery)bags.....
  20. Think he means Brighton set as in scooters mods etc......so the 100 Club is going to turn into another London Mod Club then?. I was at x fire.Didn't see many mods in the main room.A lot of mods in the other rooms though dancing to freakbeat/psych.The younger kids seem to find that a more exciting, cool, younger and friendly scene.I don't know if the days of the tailor made mod will return en masse like the eighties as the mod scene seems to be split. The Freakbeat majority)groovies/the middle aged plastics who ride vespas with union jacks mirrors and lights/jam shoes (local doos and Iow) and the r&b soul into 64/65 styles (in the minority). A lot of the 80's mods are around 38-45 and are the basis of the London rare soul scene(no seventies!!).I think there is a younger untapped audience out there....I thought Amy Wineblouse would have been down there by now (come on Amy youve had enough)....hic hic my Blakey.....Maybe getting one of the Deep Funk deejays on or Gaz Mayall. What is this XRay Soul Club about. It seems a young thing. Might be at Bethnal Green working mens Club.Maybe some interest there.
  21. £110 straight into paypal as gift..
  22. I said Mod r&b deejays who deejay on the mod scene that could bring people from the mod scene in numbers with them to the 100 Club. Im not talking about r&b deejays from the rare soul scene.................jesus (I don't know nothing about r&b by the way lol ) Thanks for that youve just reminded me of another London club...Gaz Rockin Blues....think that has been open since 1980.I wonder how he has kept it going so long.Another one for the London Club list. Think Gaz dad had a famous club near Ealing Railway Station.Had some dodgy band play there once...can't remember their name..Strolling something.
  23. Maybe I should rephrase it....mod deejays that play soul and r&b that have a following that would bring 100 people to the 100 Club. The mod scene for want of a better word does not provide the customers to the rare soul scene or northern soul scene like it used to.They would rather listen to Ruperts People or The Attack or even Tinkerbells Fairydust. A lot are from the rock side and don't even like black music. If they did they would have swarmed the 100 Club after hearing the music at xfire.Thats just the way it is. Just spotted another gig.....Brighton Beach Allnighter....not far from London
  24. Forget r&b, popcorn, latin, jazz funk.....reggae is the new northern soul and you had better like it at the venues or Matthew Hopkins will be paying a visit...
