Just had a load go missing courtesty of an ex.(there must be a local binman with a good collection).............but on another note I remember deejaying with a few boxes and one cold winter getting a taxi home. The kind taxi driver helped me with my boxes.I get everything in and go to bed.Next day check the boxes and theres one box missing.Look everywhere...nothing. Traipse up to the venue. Search it nothing.Back to the taxi company speak with the driver...nothing.I give up and time moves on.About 4 months later I get a call at work from my girlfriend (at the time)....I've found your records?? How?.She had been mopping the pavement and noticed a red plastic box tucked away in next doors alcove where the milk bottles were!!!!.

What Are The Current Big Spins Of The Moment?

Is it me or does Tommy Dent sound like some UK Club band throwaway b side........ie Geno Washington/Alan Bown etc...it's more of a mod sound than a northern soul sound. -

What Are The Current Big Spins Of The Moment?

To be fair this is Soul Source and not northern soul source.I don't consider them to be northern soul either and I don't think he was claiming they were northern soul...I think when he says "scene" he means mod/rare soul scene.Zu Zu is okay aint bad..........Four Tempos-Got To Have You is northern and underplayed (thinking mans oldie?). -
Good show.....a right mixture.

Great record.Looks like a british acetate.Got loads of UK Decca acetates of british stuff with exactly the same label. Not all of them came out on UK Decca though (on a non northern soul note ive one by The Quik of I Cant Sleep on a UK Decca acetate which was issued on UK Deram).Maybe Butch has a Decca acetate label over a different label..........great game this guessing the cover up. -
Congo by the Twistin kings

Anything by Doctor John................Voodoo by Chris Farlowe.Proffessor Longhair-Mardi Gras.Voodoo film band scene in Dr Terrors House Of Horrors.

I wouldnt bother picking it up unless its an amazing mega rarity and you got a bargain.Have i got so much of a bargain with John bowie £242 that i would be a fool not to pay the £32.36 if the seller refuses.
-
Waiting for a John Bowie from the USA.........won it for $353 and now i get a letter from parcelforce asking for £32.36............told the seller at the outset i werent paying any more charges after my fiasco with a Betty Llloyd and a key to my hapiness where i had to fork out more cash aqt customs. Some of these dealers just don't get it!!

Has there been a lookalike boot? Think I know where there is a copy....cheap

Most of them are covers for the northern scene....not self written and aimed at the scene originally.Love Hustle,Diane Foster,I'm your number 1,Diane Duncan, Loving On The Losing Side etc were probably written and performed and aimed at the scene.Footsee wasn't written for the northern scene but the dubs/crowd over the original record by the producers make it a surefire cash in directly aimed at the scene.

Feathers on UK Bell with Lost Summer Love, Julie Rogers on UK Pye with Long After Tonight Is All over, legitimate non northern soul cash in Gene Latter-Sign On The Dotted Line on the silver/red Spark and then the deep blue spark and then the northern soul cash in on the blue/yellow spark.....Barry Kingston again. The Goodies with Black Pudding Bertha (northern soul comedy cash in) who appeared on Top Of The Pops with big flat caps and massive black puddings......Bill Oddie should have known better. There was a version of Spring Rain by The Destiny Orchestra which was a definate cash in.6x6 The Allnight Band (whoever they were) .Wasnt there a label or series on a major called Soul Peeper which had an eye on northern releases

How about the tailor made LP's..the Tommy Hunt one has versions of Get Out, You got me where you want me,dotted line, crackin up amongst others...produced by Mr Spark himself Barry Kingston.Looks like Tommy appeared on LWT TV as well as the back cover is taken from a live appearance. The other three are live albums from Northern soul venues,Casino,Hinckley and The Torch(ive even got a Contempo 45 of Aint No Soul from the LP).They are more curios than for musical greatness.I found a box loads of mint Wigan ones but they have long gone.....
-
I am serious....the oldies originals box is here in a glass box ready for use.I don't remember anyone telling me that CD's were ever used at Wigan........so I don't expect deejays to use them. It's lazy and spoils the atmosphere. I want to see shiny bits of plastic going round the turntables.Anyway CD's jump...it's a known fact and the sound quality is worse than vinyl.....so all you CD deejays you are cheating the punters.Book someone who has made the effort to search out new/interesting records instead of popping down the HMV/Amazon.You don't need any thought or imagination to do that.!!!
-
Been flicking through the boxes and found this. It's a piece of art from 76 but whom is it by??.Was this a regular thing doing this to sleeves. Was it a dealer or from someones collection.Nearly as good as this other record and sleeve.Anybody got other sleeves like this out there and can anyone name the artist??
-
Strict orders...............no CD's I have an emergency oldies box of originals for emergency use !!! .
-
What happens when all the nights/niters die off and all we are left with is the CD scene, who finds/feeds the new tunes???? I think its the general watering down too many gigs not enough punters scenario.Get down the HMV...buy 20 CD's...download them for free even.Hire some decks/borrow your mates.Book the local hall.Get the mrs on the door.Get some flyers photocopied/attend some local events/drop your flyers off and hey presto youve got everyone within a ten mile radius. You take the door venue takes the bar.Safe sounds that everyone knows and home to bed with a cup of horlicks.Pre CD boom it was only casettes/original vinyl or boots and not everyone wanted to be a promoter. You had to travel which is why we had all these great venues Stafford/Torch/Wigan etc and people with old fashioned tape recorders taping the sounds. They were that desperate to hear them and there was a hunger for them.Theres also the attitude "its only a local do it's alright to play CD's".Same has happened at the Isle Of Wight Scooter rally with the Mod Cabaret scene.Who'sJams underpants playing Small Faces covers bands everywhere.......the nearest to northern soul cabaret were Zoot And The Roots who backed Eddie Holman etc but they veered away from the cheesier aspects and were competent musicians (Snake Davis).
-
CD's are the future........no more crate digging. There is a Charles Darwin type tree.......original vinyl hounds for the hardcore, a bit further down are the bootleg playing vinyl deejays then theres the HMV merchants.CD's (apparantly its called the suburban soul scene) home counties/villages where CD doos are common place and the punters are not fickle or discerning.
-
Think he must have gone to the wrong gig. Why would you give out northern flyers at a disco club???
