  1. London and the south East has loads of clubs Solid Hit Soul-Uptempo sixties newies Va Va Voom-Crossover and seventies Crystal Palace Soul-Seventies x over and funk edged Boogalo Soul-Mod style and latin 100 Club-A mix of everything ElPaso-Underplayed sixties X Ray Soul-A mix of everything but no seventies Soul On The Square-Southern oldies Soulnites Alldayers (Boston Arms)-Northern Soul oldies Filthy Mcnastys alldayers-Dont know but i think its xover. At my club (Southend) we get about 200 in and do it 3 times a year....and at the last one gave a cd away of underplayed sounds so hopefully next time people will have a bit of familiarity with the unknown. All of the above to my knowledge are mosty ovo.My club is ovo unless we have Russ on....no cd's but a mix of originals and reissues...but he draws a crowd.
  2. Is this the same guy who did Cest Lamour on UK Island and a few things for Columbia?
  3. No the signature is not for my club....the other deejays play rare and underplayed r and b etc and I will be playing a straight uptempo northern sixties set including these tracks and they have asked me to keep it underplayed so I will oblige...the tracks are from Canadian late sixties radio sessions.
  4. The reel to reels were on 3 quarter tape so I had them mastered and had carvers made up as I ain't carting and cueing up reel to reel machines....the Zola Taylor acetate I bought but its not really up to scratch I feel for playing out.Re the list of records earlier....they are all quality ...and that us the crux of it quality control...not just playing something for rarities sake.Btw Bob Relf I would class as a typical northern sound.
  5. I have had acetates in the past which I think don't cut it ....I stuck one on my YouTube channel Honey child by Zola Taylor ....I don't think it is good enough to play out.Listen yourself ....and I had 6 tracks cut from these reel to reels but two are not up to par but the other 4 are...great productions....uptempo....quality northern soul.
  6. Reply to Bearsy... Got asked to dj and I will be playing uptempo northern including 4 unreleased tracks that nobody has heard that do cut the mustard...when I do my own gigs in Southend its all uptempo northern....no r and b no Latin no xover no boogaloo.Regarding rare soul....I have listened to various podcasts etc etc but I find I just don't like rare soul but I do like northern.I can see why oldies gigs are full and rare soul gigs have low numbers ....
  7. I always shy away from gigs advertised as rare soul ....bad memories of four oclock sets that had me scurrying to Ritz bank holiday dayers as soon as they started.Listened to some rare soul podcasts recently and the music is still bad....but I don't want to listen to the same old northern either.....
  8. Best one I had was after playing Oh Happy Day....girl dancing energetically....I then stuck on Heart Be Still....girl comes over stop playing this seventies crap.....?????
  9. I think there is too much diversity modern soul r n b Latin funky and rare soul....which is a beast that I just do not understand! I've listened to a lot of it and I find that its too mid tempo and suffer from bad productions yet The Tomangoes is rare soul and northern soul and right up my street...when the two meet its great ...when they don't oh dear..
  10. Paid about 15 pound in 89.It got big spins in the jazz clubs leading it to be reissued on a jazz juice lp.Most deejays played it from Rashida.Another big track was Seawinds He Loves You...wonder if that got a 45 release.
  11. Sorry D Doug Banks is a poor cha cha cha record with Herp Alpert style mariachi brass.Soft Walkin is another American Graffiti style tune.Don't get me started on Emperor Of My Babys Heart or Gettin.to me.Who thought it would be a good idea to spin this stuf....oh another Cha Cha Cha...Carbon Copy......skip em.
  12. I always thought watching the dj pulling out records......cueing up.....chinwagging about labels....current prices....pressings....unreleased stuff....acetates ....pulling a record off because you changed your mind....quickly having to pull another out....flicking through the box for requests...swapping and selling was what it was about.CDs from Asda....when did that come into the equation?
  13. Can't he borrow a collection of records for these odd revival gigs..Im sure we can all lend him a few to avoid this second thread on Colin Curtis playing CD's....
  14. Doug banks I just kept on dancing.....bad memories of the turgid beat ballads played on the eighties nineties...
  15. Just wondered what period this is being filmed in and do you have to wear period costume...ie 74 75 76 etc
  16. Th other side Jack In A Box is great
  17. Rob was Suavecito the same track that Rule Garcia did on Billionaire records....a funky Latin track.
  18. Frank Wilson can't be that rare...it gets played at every soul night going...
  19. Frank Wilson can't be that rate...it gets played at every soul night going...
  20. Most of the above stuff is more mod orientated I would have thought. You can't even get away with underplayed oldies....its got to be obvious stuff. If he's playing in a cellar bar this stuff might work but I doubt it would in a big venue with a sprung dancefloor.
  21. The Free isn't worth much...its a failed Richard Searling spin...he's holding it up on the pic with Russ and Kev.There's a rare version of Give Me Just a Little More Timeby Wayne Fontana demo only I'm led to believe.
  22. I would class these as mod club soul sounds..not really northern.
  23. Paid 90 for the demo....is this an oldie?
