  1. I watched it and thought the lead was middle class.Shame i didnt see any old blokes with union badges and woodbine fibgers and in their slicked back grey hair.No abandoned dogs ...one with a broken paw and it would have been nice to see a glistening car park...The brambles farm hotel...its that rough the fookin alsation wears sandals.
  2. Just watched it.Love the cockney character reminds me of Sean Adams ,Lisa Stansfields acting is terrible. The lead character is middle class!.How did Suspicion appear with all that knowledge on board. The older dj character was great. This is underground..I thought he was going to stick E.L.P on.An enjoyable Uk film only slightly better than Soulboy.
  3. Ive bought loads of stuff from funkyou. The thing is he often has multiple copies of certain 45's.I wonder if this is going to be a Jesse Davis situation.
  4. Scootering was an underground movement pre Quad.Quad was pushed by the music press and a load of ex punk bands jumped on the bandwagon.Styles and fashions moved on then as well. There was not much looking back. Most of the scooterboys wore bags and dms which were the fashion of the time.Quad brought back sixties styles which was a throwback to another era.Punk dismissed everything from the past...but when you look at punk it stole bits from everything. The only media for the young was TOTP or OGWT...and the music papers. There is so much media and access today that kids are bombarded and can take the pick of everything.Music and fashion was everything then.Less so now.I think northern is now in its That'll Be The Day teddy boy period.! That scene got exaggerated with pink drapes etc...they then had rocknroll weekends at holiday camps...teddy boy famillies were a regular sight..you now have fathers and sons northern soul famillies...the teddy boys in the seventies looked ancient and ridiculous as do people in bags in their fifties. It seems that the film is going to be watched by the already converted.
  5. Errrr Quad started a mod revival which had been brewing in the south after new wave.Scootering throughout the mid seventies was well established and the directors looked at the already established northern scooter clubs for extras as there were no mods around.York Scooter Club and The Red Lion Scooter Club from Heckmondwicke are in there riding 69 GP's.The british music press pushed the mod revival along with the film as the next big thing. This overtook the already established scooter scene and the revivalist mods were seen as plastic. The music press then had so much power and influence. There is too much going on these days for young people to start a mass revival. The forties look seems to be the thing at the moment.Even Katie Alsop is influenced by it.
  6. Enchantments is a great garage frat record as is the Deadbeats and 7 Dwarfs. It only sounds wrong in a soul context.Esther Phillips on Dont Say Goodbye sounds like Minnie Mouse.George Lemons sounds terrible.Yan Vatiste played it out recently. It is like a black Chas N Dave record.
  7. Va va Voom is one of the few London gigs I go to.Last one I heard,Sherlock Holmes Standing At A Standstill...Dean Anderson played it.I havent heard that out in years..a nice oldie and a suprise. There are hundreds of oldies like this.If this film takes off the Northern Soul And Motown night "on vinyl" will be everywhere.
  8. Just turned the gig down...oh well there will be bootleg Dave to jump in i suppose.I want to be at a venue where i can bump into people and talk shit about records etc.I also want to be asking the question whats this?? Oldies were great in the mid 90 s because of all the crap that was being played because it was rare. Now they are hammered and boring.Tons of northern underplayed oldies with the right beat out there but thats a bit hard for bootleg"its whats in the grooves that count" Dave
  9. Ive just been asked to deejay at a club in Dalston ...I dont think they will be northern soul fans probably Shoreditch trendies.Offered money as well.I think i will take out a leaf out of Zammos book....Northern soul deejay wanted...just say no...just say no
  10. Dave Peanuts...hard Mod in 67...with The Neat Change and Jimmy Edwards.Beat Ambrose Slade by 3 years.
  11. VG to ex copy please.Pm me.Thanks
  12. I might list my Slimy And The Gibbons 45 then.Cant find it at the moment.Did you ever come across this version of The Cheater?
  13. I have it Pete ...its just a typical female sixties UK pop thing.Interesting label with Lovely To See You by Information and Raw Material 45s.I also have one by one of the women that did backing singing on Dark Side Of The Moon.
  14. Everybody else finds boxes of indemanders exclusives etc...look what i found.A relic of the 1973 British soul drought
  15. That Phill Terrell was cheap.
  16. Think this predates Stafford....Ian Dewhirst remembers seeing it in Jumbo records in Leeds.Noted jazzer Ahmad Jamals own label. Not bad for 30 quid...but its all swings and roundabouts.Keep buying the popcorn, reggae and xover folks.Kevin Johansen.
  17. Ive just paid £130 for it A quality sixties northern track i heard out at Va Va Voom.Seen it listed at £170 after my want ad.
  18. Sorted for 175 Euros....
  19. After a copy of this on AJP...vg upwards please.PM me.
  20. People are questioning Watermans relevance...well he was busy deejaying in July 73 at Mr Georges.Whilst he was there he created acid house and the smiley symbol...isn't this common knowledge?
  21. I think Gregory Porter would have been more representative...Pharrells Happy is divvy pop music...
  22. Would have been nice to see a juxposition of old deejays talking about discovering sounds and the young deejays today that are discovering their own records. It seems that only the young souls ever get mentioned and they are not the ones taking it forward. The BBC will be on to the seventies northern scooter scene next...now that would knock a few southern mod talking heads.
