Flirtations - Nothing but a heartache
Wiggyflat replied to Chris Turnbull's topic in Look At Your Box
I remember it being massive at Britpop clubs like Happiness Stans in London mid 1990s along with Beggin by Timebox.I had never heard those records played at a Northern Soul venue before hearing it at those style of clubs. I have never seen it on any Wigan playlists either.....now Stronger Than Her Love/Little Darling yes. -

I used to buy the lps for the Descargas...latin soul lps from the sixties seemed to be a mix trying to appeal to different audiences. You got heavy freeform descargas, ballads and boogaloos keeping everyone happy. The latin Soul 45s with english vocals were spanked on the Mod scene in the eighties (around 86/87 (Spanish Maiden/Do It To Me/Subway Joe/Right On/Soul Drummers/Mercy Mercy Baby/El Pito/Good Lovin Gilberto Sextet/Hard Hands/Love Beads/El Watusi/ At The Party/We Got Latin Soul/Cloud 9 all got spins. They were mostly very cheap. On the jazz scene it was all about lps and the Northern scene only really broke a few selected tracks .Ray Barretto got some exposure in Blues and Soul in the early seventies around the time of the Acid 45 and the lp. There was also a scene in some areas that played this stuff which led to the We Got Latin Soul comps. I remember a dj called Dave Hucker who was playing the latin soul stuff in the eighties.

Royal Mail refusing to honour insurance - thoughts/advice?
Wiggyflat replied to Paraboliccurve's topic in All About the SOUL
I sent a record registered ...arrived cracked....claimed online ...they wanted proof.Tje photos I uploaded were not good enough I sent them the cracked record and the packaging which I luckily got back.Took months and months and I had to threaten them with the small claims court. It is a war of attrition. -
I remember in the eighties my Domar soul packs were full of these along with a track called My Loves On Ration which was also an inst. Now I know that one was done for the scene from an acetate My bet is that Southwind was done for the scene as there were that many copies.Still a good record though.

If the media came to them and wanted to do a serious look at the scene why don't they say...ah you need to speak to Chris Burton,Guy Hennigan,Soul Sam,Adey,Kev Roberts,Phil Dick etc etc as I don't have the depth or knowledge of the scene as they do. -

From reading old Blues & Souls Dave called it the Northern Soul scene to describe a few clubs that played old Soul and were not interested in new releases. These seemed to be in the North. He was not branding a type of music which later became reliant on the fast Motown style tempos.Let's look at the old tv reports. This England when it was overground looked at the cultural and music aspects of it but did avoid the elephant in the room.Drug use.I actually like This England. Also there was Disco Delight which covered the dancing at The Casino with no interviews .The other montages were the rockers dancing to Hey Rocknroll and footage of a Roxy Disco at Pips.No interviews etc so this stands on its own.Something Else from 1979 was also a good segment and well explained by the girl and footage of people dancing to Disco Connection. The people explain what it is about and how different it is to the normal club scene. The film is not a look at me,look at me film. The importance of the records and music is at the forefront.Still no mention of the drug elephant though.I suppose at that time it isn't mentioned as they did not want to attract the DS but i don't think people did not dob their club in if they were nicked.I have numerous reports of people telling the Police were they bought it from or where they were going to sell. All of the above tv pieces are focused on the records and the artists.Out On The Floor tv film now does focus on drugs but suffers from a low budget.I think the next thing was Whistle Test ...Wigan had shut and it was back underground again.Another informative piece with a brief history and a serious look.Chasing Rainbows looked at one particular person and wasn't too bad either Gary Crowleys look at Morecambe was excellent and also focused on the records and how records could become big quickly.Footage of the dancers too and the link with Blackpool Mecca and Levines Hi Energy projects. The rot started with Dani Behrs piece on the Northern Soul butcher...this is the one that looked at the scene in a look at these old people with their odd rituals etc...from that piece it has been downhill since to where we are now.Responsibility is a word that should be thought about with the media ...are you going to make the scene look a joke ? What is there agenda? I mean I was asked by tv people in a programme about records and Northern Soul ...can you wear baggy trousers..F and Off were my words. The feeling I do get are that in the old docs people are participants and have no agenda about becoming famous and are natural. People are so desperate to get on tv they don't think about how it is going to be portrayed.I mean the Northern soul Nazi Float...you could not make it up. -

It is quite obvious she wants to become famous on the back of Northern Soul. Not all of the young kids are part of that Bristol gang. To me it is all about the artists/finding the records but the media have fallen in love with the trousers and the young kids. They are not interested in chemist burglaries of the past/rare records/artists which is why they go to the bright young thing. To put this into perspective though we get loads of young kids at The Rivoli who regularly jump up on stage and ask about records. One funny incident was Paul Sindab on Hype after i played it. I showed the young lad the record and he couldn't believe that a label would be made like that. They are interested in the music and dancing and good to chat to. They ask for sensible requests as well unlike the gang that are interested in being on telly.. -

Kevin started to collect the jazz dance music around 1985 and moved to London in 1987 and became a regular at Upstairs at The Wag on the regular Monday jazz nights dancing to deejays like Sylvester and Gilles Peterson. When the legendary Sunday afternoon sessions at Dingwalls started he became a regular there until it shut. He will be providing the sixties and seventies Bossa and Mambos along with the organ grooves. Ian Dewhirst - In 1977 Ian was at the top of the Northern Soul tree having residencys at Wigan Casino and Cleethorpes but he was getting priced out of buying the records. He got on a plane to Los Angeles to find them himself with help from his friend Simon Soussan. Whilst out there he was going to the top soul/funk clubs and produced a record by Shalamar.Back in Britain he met Paul Schofield in Jumbo records in Leeds and got into buying the latest Jazz Funk releases. This led him to his residency at Leeds Central and all-dayers at Blackpool Mecca, Manchester Ritz, Nottingham Palais and Birmingham Locarno. In the eighties he was the compiler of the classic Jazz Funk Mastercuts series of lp's. Ian will be sticking to the classic jazz funk cuts. This is definitely going to be a night to remember https://www.designmynight.com/london/whats-on/party/boogaloo-jazz-funk-and-latin-dancing-party?t=tickets&fbclid=IwAR3ni0gvgBhX848zC9XVZdTYwJCbx3MD_OrbFAnlef7NU9PcU5n3tww01GE -
