  1. Hi Paul, The Audio Technica LP1240 can be found for around £375, so it is not what you would call cheap. It is not a 'USB turntable' but a good quality turntable that happens to have a USB facility - I trust that makes sense to you. Yes, it will play straight into your laptop. I use mine as a front end in a Naim Audio system and it sounds fine.
  2. I'm guilty too, I even went on to buy 'After loving you' on RK by Wigans Ovation. It was only after seeing Nicky Wilson on Casino Classics red vinyl, that I stopped and thought 'Hang on a minute, this isn't Northern Soul is it?' In my opinion, that programme last night was a fairly honest interpretation of how it was - warts and all. It was pretty much how I remembered it.
  3. Yep, a documentary covering the 80's would be nice.
  4. I thought it was well paced, well explained and easy to follow - good for those viewers that weren't really sure what Northern Soul was/is. Good to see a few short teasers for the upcoming film. Nice tribute to Fran Franklin at the end too.
  5. Hi Dave, They are only available second hand, unfortunately. Finding a smart looking pair might prove difficult. Ebay will be your best bet, I sold an unused pair there a couple of months back - sorry! Andrew
  6. Given that record is vinyl and not Styrene, that must really take some doing!
  7. If you exclude really cheap/crap turntables, belt drive is the preferred choice of audiophiles due to the fact that the belt isolates the vibration of the motor from the platter and, in turn, the record groove itself. Everything is built to a price and for this reason, audiophile turntables often tend to be missing 'extras' like strobe lights, automatic speed change, brakes, pitch controls etc, that way, more money is spent on parts that affect sound quality - better quality motors and tonearm bearings that provide reliable accurate speed stability and friction free tonearm movement. A cynic might argue that belt drive is simply much cheaper to produce and make a higher profit on of course... Having said all that, I have just replaced my belt drive 'high end' Michell Gyrodec with a direct drive Audio Technica LP1240 DJ turntable because it is far more convenient for playing 45s, built like a tank, has a USB port and a built-in phono stage. My 'HiFi' listening isn't done via vinyl anymore and when playing NS 45s, the difference in sound quality between the two is negligible.
  8. The Culture Show effort wasn't bad in my opinion, so I have high hopes for this one too...
  9. I've pre-ordered both the CD and vinyl editions of the soundtrack. After seeing the film at the cinema, I will also buy the Blu-ray Disc when it is released. Like others here, I already have a lot of the music, either on CD or original vinyl and ultimately all this promo stuff is just more clutter and will eventually find it's way into the attic, just like all the Northern Soul books I've bought over the years. I guess that I'm buying these items as souvenirs and partly to show my support for what I feel has been a very ambitious and expensive project for Elaine and everyone else involved.
  10. Hi Ian, I have pre-ordered the CD edition from Amazon, but I am also interested in the 7" vinyl edition too - Amazon do not appear to have this available, so can you tell me where I will be able to purchase it from please? Will the vinyl edition be limited/numbered by any chance? Finally, a technical question about the film - would you happen to know if it has been filmed in high definition and is the sound Dolby Stereo or (fingers crossed) DTS 5.1? I can hardly wait to see it! Andrew
  11. With the exception of the promo one, I used to have the full set of Kent LPs, but in recent years I have sold some off in order to help finance the purchase of original 45s. Some of them went to Ian Clarks brother, he was collecting them for the artwork that Ian did for the album covers. I kept the Northern/Mod/Deep ones and sold the funkier ones that came later in the series. A few went for over £20, but as previously stated, £15 does appear to be the top price for many of them. 'Stand in for love' must have been quite a big seller I would have thought, because John Peel heaped praise on it and regularly played tracks from it on Radio 1. Yes, Northern Soul compilation LPs do seem to be completely out of fashion, even some of the 1970s ones don't seem to attract the prices they used to.
  12. Not a bad programme really. Some video footage I've not seen before too. Highlight for me so far is the very short but sweet piece on Edwin Starr and Shane Lynch's hairstyle and beard.
  13. Just taken delivery of my set from Amazon. My box is number is 000838. All 14 tracks played through fine, no dished or warped records, but then I noticed that single two has the Stevie Wonder label on both sides . I doubt that I am alone in this, so those of you with 'perfect' sets may want to look again more closely. Not exactly the end of the world, so overall I am very happy with the box I received.
  14. At that price, I couldn't resist either.
  15. Looks like the soundtrack release date has been pushed back to the 18th of August.
  16. Yes, an Audio Technica AT-LP 1240 USB. It is one of the 'super OEM' decks that have come onto the market since the demise of the Technics SL1210. I acquired one last month, it can be found for around £375.
  17. Sold my Freddie Houston boot on eBay about a year ago, I advertised it as a boot and still managed to get £30 for it.
  18. From Universal: “For Volume 2 a few changes to the box packaging have been made. We have adapted the label copy insert into a more substantial four page card leaflet. Vinyl will also be manufactured at Optimal to give the authentic push out centre hole of the time. Sleeves will be paper rather than gloss card. The selection of tracks again represent highly sought after vinyl releases compiled by journalist and DJ Richard Searling. Boxes will be limited edition and numbered.” I made a promise to myself that I would resist buying volume 2, but the track list and changes noted above have made it impossible to resist...
  19. I would imagine the tracks are for the second CD, these are not included in the film soundtrack.
  20. The first CD contains music from the film itself, the second CD is a selection of tracks compiled by Elaine Constantine that are not featured in the soundtrack, or at least not given any prominence.
  21. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Northern-Soul-The-Film-Bonus/dp/tracks/B00JYDGFXA/ref=dp_tracks_all_1#disc_1 The CD package is released on Monday July 7th, so presumably the film will be in cinemas around the same time. Unusual to find DVD extras in there too - I would have expected that to be saved for the DVD/Blu-Ray release of the film.
  22. Epitome of Sound - You don't love me/Where were you
  23. I have most of the Grapevine singles, all bought at the time of release. I must admit that I never considered for one minute that some of them would achieve any kind of value in the future. So, yes, you have a point there. If I remember correctly, 1980 was the big year for Grapevine releases, I was 17 years old then and they were the nearest I could get to owning an original, at 85p each, they were affordable and credible (to me, at least). Maybe the Outta Sight releases are the modern equivalent. Now in my 50's, mortgage paid and with more disposable income, I guess that I am lucky that I'm now in a position to dismiss some new reissues in favour of chasing original vinyl.
  24. I understand that the original sound recording requires licensing, but does the reproduction of label designs, artwork and logos require a separate license? The Benny Troy record is unusual though, in that the label is Outta Sight, but it uses the De-Lite design. I have always believed that bootleg copy's of records don't affect values of originals, but given the sound quality and appearance of Outta Sight releases, these apparently legal reissues may have some effect. And no, they aren't anything to get excited about, they will never be of any value, either historically or monetarily - except to Outta Sight themselves of course.
