Its not the mistake its what you do about it: the legendry Mr. Curtis one Tuesday night at the truly great Berlin club in Manchester, once turned the track down to anounce that he didn't know why people are dancing because he'd put the wrong track on. Class. I've made every mistake listed here but a memorable one was Saturday night in the Hacie putting on the wrong track from the JOB Orchestra LP. It started uptempo thus no problem then broke down into a virtuallly accapella 'hari kristna' chant. I brazened it out...After all it was the Hacie. dean

A guy in a record shop in New Orleans threatened to shoot me for playing a 45 on the designated album deck. When I explained the single deck was broken he was as nice as pie...I'm not sure that counts as miserable or not. dean

This reissue came out a while back....good hunting sir! -
There is an excellent website called Dancecrasher that deals with Jamaican music and its current lead article is an interview with one of the big fifties sound system guys. Trolling the states for indemand deletions you could find in the back of shops for 10cents, covering records up, pressings...Anything sound familiar chaps? dean

To be honest I don't know how the book ended up like it is: I read US crime noir all the time. I think it is a desperate desire not to name names! dean -
Record Collections - Sell Now Before The Market Drops
dean jj replied to MikeHinNewJersey's topic in All About the SOUL
I decided in early march to have a bit of a prune. No financial pressure, though who couldn't do with a few extra quid to cushion one from lifes emergencies, but just the feeling of having thousands of records some of which haven't been off the shelf for 25+ years [helps with condition that] that maybe could do with re-homing [at a price of course]. As a chap with a wide taste in black music somebody somewhere is usually interested in something! Anyway the reason I'm contributing to the thread is just to mention what I'm not selling to see what you chaps think: 1] Anything vaguely within four feet of my assorted 'playing out' boxes...still get asked to DJ now and then and playing very different sets. 2] All the deep soul/quiet storm/ballad stuff for listening at the homestead. 3] All the big classic soul records that aren't rare.. they are classic, people bought them, they are not worth lots of money, they remind me of youthclubs. And I'm still buying..can't stop can ya? dean -

The Voyage Of The Dynamo: Crate Digging In Outer Space - Kindle Release
dean jj posted an article in News Archives
The Voyage Of The Dynamo: Crate Digging In Outer Space A humorous romp through the Galaxy in search of an elusive rare soul record; or it might be about Manchester clubland in the 1980's. I don't know I only wrote it. Hi Kittens, Well after 12 years I've finally finished the book and while trying to find an agent to get a paper type artifact published I've made it available on Amazon Kindle. This is not your typical soul book but those of you who remember my stuff from B+S, Echoes, Mixmag, Shades Of Soul etc. wouldn't expect that. hope you enjoy DEAN added by site Publisher: Dean Johnson; First edition (2 July 2013) Out now via kindle @ £2.03 To purchase use links below Note: Can also use the below to preview read in place -
Why Have People Who Should Have Written A Book Never Done So
dean jj replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL

Well it comes to that time in life....Some people buy a sports car, others start dating blonde twins, other attend Wigan Casino revival nights. I have decided to approach middle age in a much more sensible way. Stop laughing at the back. I have decided I probably don't need 10000+ pieces of music and could probably get by, professionally and personally, with 5000 or so. So check out scoutrecords on discog. I've only just started, and have had lots of sales already, but there's a good 1500 bits both cheap and expensive of all types and a whole heap more to follow...good hunting. xxxx dean

Thanks...fantastico!!!!!! big brother took me aged 12 to see the Temptations in 1972: a major factor in my slippery slide into black music [though it had already started] a much slicker operation than the Dells but my what power the Chi-Town boys had. You can see how long they have been together with elements of doo-wop and gospel in the harmonies. Anyway thanks very much dean

Just to cheer everyone up....after a gig, three record boxes, four people, one box got left in the cab....driver came back round with 'em ten minutes later. Being a few ales the shinier I'm not sure i gave him a big enough tip.
-
The only records i have had stolen playing out have been taken from my box by friends of other dj's. my friends don't hang about behind the decks [too busy enjoying themselves] rather than bigging up their egos and theiving. It would be lovely to think that all soul fans are honourable, delightful, witty, weighed down with smoothness.....many are all those things but like all sections of society some people are very very unpleasent

Sent thousands and thousands of records out, had one broken [my fault i think] and four lost worldwide since 1986. recorded and special delivery is the way to go but...the post office is three zillion times better than the private companies who really really do not care. dean
