The 'glamour' of rare soul, and indeed other forms of black dance music, is that the person who doesn't invest time, effort, instinct, and I'm afraid these days more than ever, hard cash, doesn't get to display it. Of course then they have to have to have some presentation skills as well: which isn't always the case. Why would anybody travel miles on a dark rainy night, in a dodgy rented vehicle that smells of fish, to a tawdry venue, to hear music on a disapointing sound system, if Norris from next door can own the bloody music by typing?
