Crossover Soul is the term used by Northern & Modern Soul DJ's, back in the day, who needed a 'get out of jail free' card after burning thier bridges after stating either 'All 6ts is crap just gonna play Modern' or 'All Modern is crap just gonna play 6ts'................ However............ Crossover is the period in time between about '68 to the mid seventies....... ish, its the period when the rawer 6ts sound started to give way to more polished productions due to the advance in technology & recording techniques, but before disco. It can be both 6ts sounding & 7ts sounding..........its usually enjoyed & championed by soul afficanados with a more sophisticated ear & a greater appreciation of soul music . Those with a lesser appreciation of the finer points of SOUL due to thier ignorance tend to dismiss & look down upon those of us that enjoy Crossover Soul . Russ

T'other side of GJ did get some spins way back..........I've played it off & on for a few years too, however I have heard Karl Heard spin it recently, soooooooo deffo going places. Good luck with the sales. Russ

The simple answer my friend is 'yes'.................however, before we start the debate again & i get verbally burnt at the stake, there is a time & a place & just because i dont want to hear them every week doesnt mean i dont actually like & appreciate them. If its an oldies doooooooooo then fill ya boots, if its a regular Nighter then i would prefer to hear less obvious tunes played........Rod makes a very good point, there are very few totally unknown records these days, most have had an odd play at least, but i'm partial to an odd oldie, just would prefer for DJ's to dig deeper........my fave at the moment is Eugene Smiley & the Essence of Love............now i had literally almost totally forgotten this record, now that to me is the Essence of a great oldie. I must admit, that i had never heard it played out for 20 years & had totally forgotten it, until hearing your mix Marc & Cliff playing it out, altho', I'm sure i must have heard it at least occasionally as a good friend has a copy here on the South Coast !!!...........still need the Ralph Soul Jackson BTW, another hoofin' tune. You can wait until August my friend & hear it in all its glory at DOS from moi ............it also came out as a blue issue copy, credited to 'Essence of Soul' only, but even harder to come by........an early 8ts spin covered up as the 'Fiestas', of all things ???.........i think Cliff Steele is responsible for its current reactivation, altho to be fair, probably forgotten or unknown to most until recently. Absolutely top class tune..........altho when i was a resident at Rubyz in B'mouth a certain person who shall remain nameless, uttered those immortal words 'Great set, other than that Disco crap in the middle' referring to ES !!!.
