Yeah, your right Ian, my Math aint great first thing Monday mornings - another NS legacy . Best Russ

Point taken, but the vast amount of music played over the years has been black American - & as the primary point of reference, the generalisation for the sake of this thread is validated Im sure... Best Russ,

Its over 40 years now that we have had some sort of Northern/Rare Soul Scene in the UK. Soul music was, on the whole, vastly under rated & over looked in its country of origin - particularly the plethora of obscure non commercial output, from a multitude of areas, labels & artists, aswell as musicians, producers, writers & back room players. What started as a localised under ground music scene in the North of England, has blossomed into a truly world wide phenominum. The music of black america, has inspired a generation of British teenagers. Some of which, have made a whole life times career, out of the promotion of obscure black dance music from America - releasing material from said artists, seaching out the artists & bringing them to our shores to entertain & enthrall a whole new audience, which they could never have imagined when they first laid there soul to wax. Artists careers have been rejuvenated, with records being re - issued & even successfully & comercially entering the the British pop charts, as a consequence. Other artists have been pulled from obscurity, artists who may never ever have been recognised in a any way what so ever, if it had not been for an underground dance scene in the UK hungry for fresh vintage black dance records, ever diggin deeper for that unknown/obscure gem with 'that' beat, to keep the dance floors of the North of England & then further afield & now internationally full every weekend of the year for over 30 years. Northern Soul continues to leave a massive positive legacy, that has not only made a difference to many peoples lives in the UK, but has had a positive influence on Black American music makers, who some times even benefit financially as a result of a once small but vibrant & exciting dance scene, that rose out of the working class white teenagers in the North of Englands passion for Black Vintage dance music, from a far away land, most could never even imagine - how the hell did that happen ?....but it did & it still continues to this day. Northern Soul - a positive legacy - an upbeat discussion about the positive influence that NS has had on the music of black america & the British enthusiasts that created a scene to dance to it !!!....discuss. It was a massive record at the 100 Club in the 8ts, probably an Ian Clark spin, but memory is failing, Ady was going thru his Latin phase about then too...................great record & one thats never far from my box ooohher missus........ Best Russ -
Searling 78 - 81, the Butchmeister....& the night Ady Croasdell first dropped the first batch of unissued RCA sides in a oner, same set 100 Club....'kin awesome....the first England v's Scotland Nighter at the 100 Club was pretty magnificent, but to be fair there have been many sets that have blown me away over the years...Guy/Keb etc, Soul Essence sets early days with Rod Dearlove, Terry Jones of Norfolk Village fame 'kin awesome sets..... You often hear nightmare stories about buying 45's, so I just wanted to show the other side of the coin, so to speak. A massive thank you then to one of the scenes true gentlemen, legendary, collector, DJ & seller, Ady Pountain. Just done a fantastic deal with him over a very elusive 45 that I have been after for the last few years. A really nice & decent bloke to deal with & was very flexible with the arrangements. Record is better than described in my oipinion & the price was more than fair. Do not hesitate to deal with Ady, you will not be dissapointed. Many thanks again Ady Best Russ

Thats the point, it doesnt matter at all & no one thinks any worst or better of you for having been there or owned that, but they may change thier opinion of people if they were telling porkies for no particular reason.... Russ

It was a good 15 yrs ago mate, so best let things lie .....its always fascinated me tho why some, otherwise knowledgeable & respected people still feel the need to embelish the truth on occasion ?. Im thick as mince when it comes to tunes & always extremely happy to hear a good yarn about a record, especially if I learn something.... Best Russ

There are always folk around that claim this n that, but even those that have been around years are learning all the time - I have far more respect for those that are honest. Please dont get me started on tall stories about records either. I was once diggin around the second hand record stalls n such in Portsmouth, when in one I met a very respected Motown collector, who had an arrangement with the local stores regarding any Motown, they would save things for him to collect next time he passed by. This particular day he asked me what I had been buying recently, I had just bought a copy of 'You Aint Sayin Nothin new' on US Motown, which at the time was a huge play all over the UK....I was gob smacked when this guy insisted in front of the store owner that he had a copy on a British Motown...I diplomatically tried to infer he might be mistaken, but was 'shouted' down by the 'expert'.....I can only assume that said collector felt the need to impress, then belittle me in front of his 'source' ?....needless to say my respect for this guy was shattered & I can never look at the guy in the same light.....a totally uneccessary lie...why ? I have one of the CD's, but I forget which one now & Im out in baggers, nice contemporary soul, but not sure many on here would appreciate it....for £6 a pop I would have thought well worth the money. Best Russ

New Mr Fish Mix! Current Biggies & Obscurities
Russ Vickers replied to Mister Fish's topic in All About the SOUL
Lovin it Steve....you really can put a great Mix together, I enjoy each & every one, however I do like the ones like this with some newies in the Mix... Peace, Love n Soulfulness Russ -
We've all been there mate, the reason most are into Soul music is that we couldnt handle the music n the 'divs' in normal clubs, just to let you know the illness gets proggresively worst the older you get, my advise is to emigrate to Manchester . Good luck mate, you'll always have an understanding ear on SS. Best Russ

It very much depends on the kind of records your looking for. On the whole you will not find boxes of traditional NS records in mint condition, they just arnt out there any more, unless some one has just sold up. There are certain 'dealers' tho, who I will make a B line for at Nighters, cos you know they will have a variety of different records for sale & their stock is turned over reasonably quickly or they change their stock. There are other 'dealers' who I cant be bothered to look thru cos you know the boxes will be full of the same records, give or take a few, that have been in there for the last five years. My personal favourite is the little boxes that 'punters' may bring, they tend to be excellent on the whole. Generally speaking Im not looking for stone cold classics in mint condition or obscure records on iconic labels to complete the run, which many traditional collectors might be diggin for. Im neither a proper DJ or proper collector, altho I have a modest collection of sorts, Im just looking for oddball things that catch my ear & yes, I'll hold my hands up to hoping that I might find the 'next big thing' in a box at my next Nighter, Ive been looking & hoping for the last 30 years to no avail, but I keep looking & listening lol. The record bars are as good as ever in my opinion, just depends whose box ya looking in, & what ya looking for, but then that was how its always been to some extent.... As a slight aside, the one thing that always makes me gigggle tho, so long as you havnt spent next months mortgage, is when you play that, unknown to you record that you bought last night, that last night 'was' the 'next big thing', but when you get home in the morning, in the cold light of day, you realise its a pile of shite ....even better if your with your mates & you've just told them that the record that you've just bought & about to play them will be the biggest sound in the country next week ....old Chinese proverb 'dont buy records when you have your beer/gear ears on' lol. Good thread BTW Russ

Linda Jones & Gloria 'Towanda' Barnes, amongst many others....I have not heard a record by Gloria/Towanda that hasnt knocked me bandy, very under rated IMHO.... Russ

Jean Carter is an amazing NS record - however, as its an unissued, one - off, uncredited acetate, I doubt very much if it will ever come on to the open market. But agree with the sentiment Keith. Russ

Whilst the thread title is unfortunate, altho mildly amusing, can we pse keep it reasonably on topic as some may find the F references offensive. Cheers dudes
