  1. Yea what ever buddy, go ahead you can quote who ya like, once again what could be a half decent thread soiled n f*cked by the same old same old....crack on Im off & BTW get over it ya self....lost the will to live... Russ
  2. 'I'm not talking DJ's from the stone age, I'm talking guys who are still around & used to bring summat special to the party'. The whole point missed once again, what bit didnt you understand........zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, oh well another thread f*cked by lazy people who cant be arsed to contribute in the spirit of the thread......so I'll be off then, you can try play nice like... Russ
  3. Theres always one lol...so now this will degenerate, instead of being hopefully an interesting debate. Russ
  4. Yeah, Carl for sure, but I think he does still do stuff ?, but the trouble with these guys is, if they're just being wheeled out now & again, instead of getting a residency at a big(ish) nighter, were they can have half a chance of breaking thier latest new discoveries, then they pretty much have to stay with the tried n tested. Same with Greety too, top DJ, but under valued. Dean is one of my all time favourite DJ's ever !. Shay Richardson is a legend & its crimminal that he doesnt get more bookings outside of Soton. So agree whole heartedly..... Russ
  5. I thought they seemed to just about get the right mix of tunes to be honest Chalky, I know its a personl thing, but for me it was great, when too many of the type of oldies that I didnt like came on I went to the sales boxes, didnt seem to get any politics or moaning either, so I think for most they hit the spot.... Russ
  6. I'm not talking DJ's from the stone age, I'm talking guys who are still around & used to bring summat special to the party: Andy Rix Shifty Gary Spencer Irish Greg Ian Clarke Ion T Tony Smith (1) only seen occasionally now. Colin Law & many more of the old Scottish contingent from the late 8ts - early 9ts. James Trouble Karl Heard David Flynn (In Japan I know). & there are many more too, I know some have sold up - but there are others who havnt, but for what ever reason are on a break or dont DJ any more (or get asked ?) or have left the scene. These guys added summat to the scene IMO, some were controversial, some just got on with it, but without exception you knew when you went to hear these guys you were gonna be entertained, educated & came away knowing you had been to a happening. Would love to see some of these guys make an appearance again with the same enthusiasm & a different set of tunes for today..... There was some talk a while back Richard Searling was gonna start playing, for want of a better expression, more 'upfront' NS sets....would genuinely love to see this happen, but never seemed to have materialised..not interested in Richards all oldies sets or the kind of Modern he plays now, but a proper diggin deep, in ya face contemporary NS set, I would travel & pay good money for.... Will we ever see the likes again at a resonably large Nighter...? Best Russ
  7. One of my favourite Nighters over the years was the Rarest of the Rare Allnighters that Richard Searling ran on Bank Holiday Sundays at Manchester Ritz. IMO they were great, a fantastic mixture of Soul Music, packed out, full dance floor & everyone from every corner of the NS spectrum seemed not only to be there, but to thoroughly enjoy em. Happy memories of some brilliant Allnighters. Wouldnt it be great to have something similar now. Best Russ
  8. Yes, I think you might be right mate... Best Russ
  9. How ya doin Sooty ?....good to hear from you....dodgy hat or what lol Russ
  10. Played at the 100 Club way back in the 8ts by Clarkie et al, never though of it as a Mod record tho, just a good dance record.
  11. Sammy Cambell - I Never Thought Bobby Moore - Chained To Your Heart Anthony & the Aqua Lads - I Remember Lulu - There Has Got To Be a Way (Drizabone Mix) Herman Hitson - Love Slipped Thru My Fingers Ivan Mateus - Somebody Knows How You Feel Isaac Hayes - Disco Connection Judy Clay - Since You Came Along Tony Middleton - Spanish Maiden Russ
  12. Pete is still out n about on occasion..... Best Russ
  13. The original Shiptown release is the punchier of the two cuts IMO, there is a story that this was a different cut, which was not backed up by the Idettes, cos they couldnt afford to get them to the studio in NY from Norfolk VA, so they used the session singers ???. Ida also recorded as part of a duet called the Soul Duo with Joe Webster (Anglos), also on Shiptown. I met her a few times some years ago & is a lovely woman, met Joe the once & likewise....there is a funny story behind that too...Joe's son is called Joseph & also worked in the music industry..... Best Russ
  14. *See post 24...?, do I have this wrong ?....thought the white ones which credit ES&EL were demos & the blue ones which credit just the EL were issues....could have this all mixed up though, cant check properly right now, so your saying there are two release numbers Steve ? Best Russ Russ
  15. I do have a copy, but for the life of me I cant remember where I got it, mine is the release that credits Eugene Smiley & the Essence of Love, demo I think, the issues only credited the Essence of Love....or is it vice versa, in Baghdad so cant check, I think it was Cliff who reactivated this a couple of years ago, still lots of plays left in this, quality all the way.... Russ
  16. Covered up as the Fiestas I think.....thought it was Poke myself... Russ
  17. I liked your fanzine too Pete, dont think Jock is a genius, just really enjoyed being whisked away to a far off time again....a time that many have forgotten or where never there in the first place, so a timely reminder of why some on here, myself included get very excited when others disrespect that era or ethos thru lack of understanding...read & inwardly digest lol Best Russ
  18. Some how you can really feel the passion in the writing, it feels quite personal....something that doesnt always come across as well on SS sometimes for some reason.....I think that they were more naive times & thats reflected in the writing in the fanzines of the time....I liked it better then, we all know or have access to, almost everything now via the interweb....back then you had to work hard for information & to put a collection together.....(sighs nostalgically.....). Russ
  19. Absolute brilliant reading & never ceases to amaze me that all the things we hold dear & debate to this day, have been hot topics on the scene forever....I love this kinda thing, its like a little piece of time... Jock, thanks for having the inspiration to write in the first place & Chalky thanks for posting. Best Russ
  20. BTW there is an unissued Charles Mintz recording, not sure if it was recorded around the same time period, cant remember full title, but 'Candy' is in the title some where, not at home so cant check....dont remember it being as good as the released Uplook stuff... maybe 'Candy Baby'...? Best Russ
  21. Charles Mintz for me every time, remember the first time I heard Butch play this at the 100 Club (15 years ago ?)....the place exploded, it totally blew me away & still does to this day, the wah, wah that some find intrusive is one of the things about the record that distinguishes it, especially on the intro, that & the uhhhh's.....bloody love it..... That doesnt mean to say I dont like DOS BTW, just prefer CM as it has more wooophhhh as a Nighter record. I hear DOS played out occasionally still, but very rarely CM ?, maybe the places I go ???. Ps/....Was CM ever covered up ?....cant recall it being covered, but dont remember the artist being mentioned on initial plays, so maybe a secret sound type thingy ?. Best Russ
  22. The thing is, many people arnt aware of these records until they are played out, which then inflates the price, many collectors on here (my self included on occasion), just assume these records are known & in a lot of cases they arnt....nothing new though, has happened since forever & will continue....thats why we dig innit !!!. Best Russ
  23. Must say it sounded very good over a big system, I heard this some time ago & whilst it sounded nice over the PC speakers, it didnt really do it justice as a dance record in a venue, as is often the case. Best Russ
