  1. Yes, tent music, two step, soulful house, contemporary, popcorn, boogaloo, across the board & probably another ten or so.............when actually all we need is the one 'RARE SOUL' & BTW preferably in one room, played to open minded people who dont care about the decade that a record was released in, they just wanna dance if it has the X factor, played by innovative exciting DJ's, supported by forward thinking promoters..............................& before the flack starts nobody is advocating that the room shouldnt be 60% or so traditional & 40% or so other or what the dancefloor dictates on any particular night.............most of the legendary venues had an open music policy & that is a fact, its just that we have more years of soul music to choose from now.......................... 'Take coverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !!!!!!'. I'll stop talking sense now & get me coat.......................... Russ
  2. Was played covered up as Eula Cooper, if memoery serves me right, Guy played it at the 100 Club in the early 9ts, still covered as EC, it was new to me then, altho' the genuine title was probably an open secret. Im sure some of these turned up in a local record store in Essex or some such place................maybe me, memory aint what it was ????. Russ
  3. A few people moving into position on this methinks, looking at the amount of people selling up big money tunes right now . Both sides superb BTW. Russ
  4. Wasnt this a regular nighter spin years ago covered up as Linda Jones I think ?????...........obviously the copies flooded the market when uncovered blah, blah.........good tune tho. Russ
  5. I cant remember the difference between the mixes on the two labels, could somebody kindly post the two so we can make a comparison pse. Russ
  6. This was my final night too, never went again in a vain attempt to keep my memories intact & untarnished. Russ
  7. In the past I have mainly DJ'd for the love of it, unless it has been a major venue that can afford to pay a proper wage. In the future if I am lucky enough to get the gigs, I cant afford not to charge at least expenses, this is not thru some massive ego or whatever............its cos when you have a family, a mortgage & a vinyl addiction to feed, I could not afford not to charge a reasonable fee. I have sometimes ended up well out of pocket when DJing....................I am not in a position now where I could justify this. Ironically the worst I was ever stiffed for me dosh, was by a major promoter, who didnt even have the good manners to explain to my face, just avoided me all night & made the situation excedingly embarrassing. Some 'local' promoters in my experience almost expect you to do the gigs for love & almost make you feel like your not 'part of the cause' if you have the audacity to hope for even expenses. BTW Im not talking massive amounts of money here either. As a promoter, ten years ago I was paying guest DJ's around 50 pounds, the big names were getting more than that & in certain circumstances a hotel too. One or two 'name' DJ's kindly when asked, said pay me what you can.............I will never forget a particular DJ who's fee was never more than we could afford, altho he deserved far more than I could ever pay (Thank you Dave T). I have even paid DJ's out of my own pocket on more than one occasion, altho on one memorable night, the 'live' artist that was performing a PA for me............looked into the venue from the VIP room & refused to go on unless I doubled his fee...........I had no money, every single penny had gone into the venue & promotion..........all the resident DJ's came to the rescue by wavering thier fee for the night, which allowed me to pay the artist & therefore not let down the punters. While all this was happening, the 'full house' was blissfully unaware of my predicament, the night went on to be seen as a huge success by all who attended, but I nearly lost my shirt & would have if it hadnt been for the guys giving their time for free. So yes IMO, DJ's should always be paid something, even if in the cases of the smaller local venues its just expenses, unless there are mitigating circumstances like a potential lynch mob . Russ
  8. Brilliant record IMHO old Volumes c/up Irish Greg used to play this too..........quite hard these days. Russ
  9. brilliant clip...thanks for posting it up...........is Zanzibar still going then ?????. I'd like to go if its still operating the soulful dance gear.........more info pse. Russ
  10. Its a great record..............having suffered from being thrashed to death, wouldnt bother me if I never heard it at a venue again, but you cant deny a quality record...............listen to it, close your eyes & imagine you are hearing this for the first time ever..........would you dance, I know I would, if it was discovered today it would still be a monster, but then its not just about the record is it, its about what it stands for, its the sound that epitomises the more modern sounding records, with slicker recording techniques & a smoother less raw quality that were to become part of the scenes rich diversity..............some of us embraced the sound & excepted it along with the more traditional tunes, others hated it. Russ
  11. Deffo legit...........its a slightly longer version, I think there were 200 pressed........cant remember, maybe 300, but it was limited & done from the masters............I know the guy that did em, he's a cool guy & everything is legal , same chap that does the great Ol Virginia Soul comps. Russ
  12. One of my JB faves is 'I Dig You Baby' bw 'Some Kinda Magic' its records like this that make it all worth while.............listening to it now & the goose bumps have come up...........cant wait to hear this over a massive system in a venue..........'spect the tumble weeds will be blowing across the dancefloor as I make a dash for the back door before I can be lynched for clearing the dancefloor with records that arnt 'Norvern' ...............fcuck em........tis soulful dance music, you either get it or you dont. Feeling the soul.............Russ
  13. Somebody pse buy the Beverly & Duane, fantastic disc & IMO kicks the Brown Bomber effort into a cocked hat.............good price too. Russ
  14. Back to the point of the original post............is this known or not, if so has it had any plays..............do you guys rate it or not..............I think both sides are brilliant & wonder why it isnt a massive chooooooooon ?????. Russ
