I think the guy just wanted a bit of advice mate, 'An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion'. Ay up Scal (Mike), what's wrong with you ???....why don't you try being positive sometimes, I didn't think that I'd seen anything recently from you other than derogatory comments, I did wonder if you were just a troll !....a very cursory glance at your contributions, appear to confirm my thoughts.....cheer up & put some of that negativity into adding something positive into SS, I man of your years of soulful experience must have some fantastic knowledge, memories & opinions to share...... Really looking forward to the film & Elaine will do it justice for sure. The soundtrack comes with the territory & I hope it sells well. What I cant & never can understand, is why people try to deny that the scene was fuelled by amphetamines, 99.9% of those that attended Allnighters were kept up all night dancing because of the use of speed. Nobody is trying to glorify it, it just was & for very, very many people it was all part & parcel, for some it still is to this day, I find it totally ridiculous that you can just sweep it under the carpet, almost laughable really.....I also find the suggestion insulting, that just because you dropped a few caps you had no appreciation of the music, without naming names, some of the most respected & knowlegeable people on the scene had a mis spent youth shall we say & some of the best record collections were allegedly financed through it....I have the greatest respect for everybodies opinion, but some of the holier tha thou drivel really gets my gander !!!. I was serving in the Armed Forces, so even if I had wanted to partake, I couldnt have, but seriously, I cant think of one of my civillian friends who didnt, not one....If the film doesnt deal with the subject realistically, then it wont be the real deal, it happen(s)ed....get over it & stop trying to white wash us, I feel sorry for those that didnt go, but have a passing interest in what it was like, when folk pretend certain things didnt happen.... The film will be brilliant, I know Elaine & she will have made sure that it is as true to life as possible, now lest wait & see. Best Russ

A curator (from Latin: curare meaning "take care") is a manager or overseer. -

Thats my perception Martyn, I'm sure Ady will put us all right at some point, but in essence sounds like a brilliant idea, as long as you keep the 'essence' of the club & the curators are aware of the vibe, then can only enhance what is already a great Nighter IMO. Russ -

I quite like the sound of that....a stroke of genius on Ady's part really, cos he now only has to remember to choose the curator lol...I'm asuming this would be more of an occasional thing anyway....Ady ??? Best Russ -
Curator For Soul Nights/allnighters
Russ Vickers replied to Russ Vickers's topic in All About the SOUL
I think with regard to the 100 Club at least, the curators will be people who are long standing regulars, who know & understand the club, for example the person curating the August 100 Club (maybe more), is Matt Bolton, Matt will know 100% what makes a great 100 Club Allnighter, I also think, that it helps Ady tap into DJ's who may normally be off his radar....I'm not sure about this, but the curator will also have a vested interest in the promotion, therefore ensuring the event gets max visual to the right people....I think that it could be a good thing & certainly worth investigating.... Best Russ -
Recently noticed that the 100 Club Allnighters are going to use a curator for some of the Allnighters. I believe that other non soul clubs do this on occasion. I'm not sure what it means TBH......I think that Ady has probably found a great way to promote the 1OO Club in a different way, but I'm not sure what happens & how it works....just curious. Is this something that we might see happen at other Soul Clubs ?. Thanks Russ

Price Please - Marvin Gaye - Love Starved Heart With Pic Sleeve

Yes, from an acetate, whether it was an original acetate or cut from a tape I dont know, I think it was played as Marvin Gaye - 'Its Killing Me', as opposed to the full title. Or maybe I have dreamt it, but dont think so, anyone confirm, as my old brain can get a little confused these days after all of the years of abuse :-). Best Russ -

Was played from this promo at the 100 Club virtually straight away, think mine was £100 at the time...there seemed to be a fair few about TBH. Obviously played by RS in the latter days of the Casino, but Ady reactivated it at the 100 Club fo sho...sold mine yonks ago, cos as stated it had been thrashed. Best Russ -

I agree Mik, but I think that the 8ts is a relatively unmined sourse of records on the 'Rare Soul' scene & I can see more getting programmed into sets in the near future, its like everything, most of that jarring synthesiser stuff really grates on me, but there will be odd left field things that are just perfect to be fitted into sets of 6ts & 7ts Rare Soul...in fact some are getting played now & it will continue, not complete sets, but odd things that are right & have the X Factor.... Best Russ -
Its always nice to have a record that turns out to be rare, but TBH I would rather have a good record than a rare record, if its great & rare then bingo !!!. Best Russ

I actually think there are rareities still in the UK with folk who went to WC for example or else where, had a small box of records, dropped off the scene, never to be seen again, they'll be loads of small collections in lofts, sheds n garages all over the UK. We assume that every person who ever went to a Nighter is well aware of the current scene & is romping around Stoke/Blackpool in an over sized pair of Spencers, that just isnt true. I would also suggest there are loads of folk who have never been to a NS do in thier life have these discs amongst other records they collect, Motown collectors for example, may have loads of related discs they have picked up along the way & hauded. A friend of mine some years ago, who doesnt collect, but has been on the scene for years, phoned me to tell me that on the notice board at his place of work someone had put up a small note with a collection of soul records for sale, I contacted the guy, we met in a car park in Newbury, I bought the lot, about 500 records for £250, most of which were 7ts pressings & UK re issues, I took out what I wanted, including a Salvadors & a small clutch of other originals & sold the rest on to a dealer the same night for the same price, £250. I also found a small clutch of records including several raeities in the loft of an old Mod in Portsmouth. And again, I know a guy who used to travel all over the south topping up Juke boxes, he has some British rareities & some other stuff, dont think he has been to a soul do in over 20 years or more. They'll be loads of stuff like that knocking around all over the UK. However, I dont see the arse dropping out of the collecting scene any time soon or even in 10 years, its a truly international thing now & together with a younger generation of collectors in the UK & the 10 yearly Mod revivals they'll be rareities selling for top wonga for many years to come..... I agree whole heartedly with the above post, 8ts will continue to become programmed more & more, those that 'get it' are already mining the stuff & sooo much more than a dodgy synthesiser when you dig deep.... But there will still be a scene, by then the nostalgia crowd will have long gone & the money grabbing soul less promoters with them, we'll have a smaller but infinitly better scene, with a Stafford like venue rising from the ashes to be the last great soul Allnighter, it will be our last horrahhh in the UK, but I think we'll go out with a bang... now Europe is another thing entirely & I think European/Anglo European venues will dominate a small but soulful scene. Best Russ -
I cant be at every 100 Club cos I'm in the friggin desert, but I'll tell ya something, If I was still based in the UK I wouldnt miss a single one its my spiritual Rare Soul home & can never be bettered.... Yay on the film release, cant wait.... Russ

I spose theyre being played to a relatively new audience tho, who never heard em when they went big first time around & thats why DJ's that play those gigs, who play OVO & have only been around again a few years will pay through the teeth for em...both great records, but should have given em a far longer holiday before putting em back to work again & at what price..... If you think the amount of copies will effect the selling price your nuts, just look at medium rare records like the Cashmeres, there's one for sale almost every week, certainly every month & it doesnt effect the price..... Best Russ

Following on from the thread about Wade Flemons & Turley Richards discs & the massive price they made in auction recently, what tut box cheapies do you think will be fetching the big bucks in 10 years time ?. Russ
-
My timing will be when I'm dead lol, unless I have a massive unexpected shortfall....once I have the records they have no monetary value to me, although theyre worth thier weight in gold quality wise. I invest in SOUL & would never buy a record hoping I can sell it in 10 years or what ever for a profit.... Hope youre well mate Best Russ

Without stating the obvious & rolling out the old chestnut about I paid 25p scrillions of years ago, Wade Flemons was still a £10 record in the 9ts & there was no shortage of them, in fact i think it was John Weston, altho could be wrong, pulled three out of the same box at the 100 Club at a tenner each & that was soon after people began to notice it...I have no issues paying top wack for records that I think are worth it, if I have the funds at the time, but honestly I would dearly love to know who these people are paying this kinda wonga for these type of records that arnt mega rare really...& more to the point why they would do it....problem is every Tom, Dick & part time record dealer will now have a similar price on these very records....Bonkers !!! Now sorted thanks. Russ
