  4. they're ok, except the cryptic ones that mean nothing to anyone except the owner. Russ
  5. Willie Johnson is great & quite tough..........somebody should give this a good home. Russ
  6. Between 77' & '81 were the years I graced the hallowed ground & I loved it, it would take me over 8 hours to get there from Portsmouth, as I could very rarely afford to get the expensive route on the train, it was a bit like trains, planes & automobiles, if you had no money you jumped the train or hitched, I once missed the coach from outside the Brit in Notts & ended up in a stlolen car (I didnt realise this until we were pulling into the car park at Wigan, in my defence & naivety !!!) You had to get there one way or another, there's a few other colourful tales too, but dont want to incriminate myself any further ............in '77 I was one of the 'kids' the proper soulies moaned about...........I chose my DJ's in the main room, RS being my main point of interest, along with a few others, I didnt really have any interest in the pop, with a few exceptions & spent a lot of time in M's between my favourite DJ's in the main room........getting my soulful education............I danced quite often on the balcony in M's on that bit of hardboard..........so I was the one partly responsible for the bits falling on ya head from the ceiling . I s it really closed . Russ
  7. Same label etc, different tune, as good IMHO. rUSS
  8. Fantastic (forgotten ?) Mecca tune.............lurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrvvvvvvveeeeeeeee it. Russ
  9. This looks like mine Mark........................anyone confirm the existence of another label design ???. Russ
  10. I need to upgrade my whipped copy of the Lost Family, so anyone who can help pse get in touch. Thank you Russ
  11. Isnt there two different label designs on this ?????? not sure if this would effect the price, depending on which design.............fantastic record BTW that does it for me big time........remember playing this at the Dome years ago & wondering if it would work..........neednt have worried.......the cream alway's rises to the top. Mecca sound ???????????? sounds like it should have been. Russ
  12. Getting better by the day mate................just playing & putting the 'cat amongst the Pidgeons' with the post trying to amuse myself . Hope your well mate, when you back to blighty ????. Russ
  13. Ady Croasdell has to be up there...........I know he would hate it & make some wise crack, but his personal contribution to the scene cannot be ignored, not just as a promoter & DJ, but as label manager for Kent. I concur with young David too, John Anderson must be some where near to the top of the list of people who have helped shape the Rare Soul Scene for years & years..............& there really has to be a book there. Russ
  14. RIP........... see ya at the big Allnighter in the sky mate, a truly, truly deep & gentle man, with a soul as deep as ya like & then some, we hadnt seen each other for some years Jim, due to my move over seas, but I was looking forward to seeing you soon & they'll always be a space on the dance floor where you should be at the venues we used to see each other. God bless. Russ
  15. Your having a laugh, Black Nasty included a couple of Johnnie Mae Mathews kids & wasnt Big Hit her label ????. Country Road is a fab dancer & with its funky bass line is just right for today........I know at least one DJ who includes this now & again in what is an otherwise a pretty upfront set. More recently Johnnny Praye does it for me. A lot of the Beach sounds from the Carolinas that have crossed over are white, but as they were generally trying to copy a 'black' RnB sound many sound pretty good to my ears, too many examples to mention really, but the Nomads, Embers, Bob Collins, Anthony & the Aqua Lads, Frankie & the Damons, etc, etc, etc. It will be quite interesting to see how the so called purists view this post. Russ
  16. I know this has been discussed many times over the years, as far back as when the instrumental reighned supreme, but is there such a thing as a 'soulful' instrumental.........not knocking instrumentals per se, but surely its the vocalist(s) that add the 'soul' content................discuss . Russ
  17. Shay used to play this around the South Coast & Southampton when it was a new release. More recently, well relatively anyway, maybe 10 yrs ago Roger Saint gave it some welly down here, never really took off, so pleased that its eventually getting its 15 mins of fame.........oh & BTW I paid about a fiver for my copy albeit some years ago, I just have to find it now........think its around my bro's with some other soulful tackle I'm hopefully about to rediscover. Good luck Russ
  18. Greg, think I may have snagged a copy, just waiting to seal the deal, so to speak, if it falls thru I'll PM you with an offer. Thanks buddy Russ
  19. Hope to see ya soon. Russ
  20. Still need a NM/EX copy of this for a sensible price please. Also any info on the the Mighty Chevelles Flaming Arrow LP with regards to price & availabilty ??? Thanx Russ
  21. Absolutely fantastic record, both sides are bloody marvellous, one side an uptempo tub thumping NS dancer of the highest order, slightly dodgy vocal in parts, but stands proud against virtually any NS discovery of the last 30 plus years, t'other side sublime midtempo real deal soulful shuffler........doesnt get any better, my 100 Club Anniversary 45's are held in very very high esteem by me & are very dear to my heart, a piece of NS history bought to us by one of the nicest & most dedicated advocates of our music, long may the 6ts AllNighters continue, long may the tradition of the Anniversary 45's continue & lets all hope the Ace/Kent inprint will always provide us with quality releases. Oh yeah & get ya arses down to the Kent Anniversary dooooooooo Russ
  22. Yep, young Kenneth, that was I, as I remember it, it was an inspired set too.............................must dig it out of storeage for a spin. See ya soon mate Russ
  23. I just wanted to thank everyone for thier kind wishes whilst I have been ill & give you all an update. Well, as Steve has mentioned Im now home after a fair old stay in hospital & the worst is over & Im feeling a lot better, still need plenty of rest & poor long suffering Jenny is having to take me to the medical centre every other day, but considering everything Im as well as I could be under the circumstances............Jen knew I was on the road to recovery, when at the weekend I tried to convice her that if she or Steve drove & they parked me in a corner we could go to the 100 Club Anniversary, needless to say the intelligent one in the relationship had the last say . Once again, thanks to everyone & I hope to see you all soon. Russ
