  1. A record that sums up all the best things about NS musically, a disc I never ever thought I would own, If they were giving em away with cornflakes, it still wouldnt alter the 'hero worship' status this record holds for me........its priceless at any price IMHO. Russ
  2. All of the above.............& more s'long as ya can dance to it & its soulful. Russ
  3. Remember when the first clutch of 2 or 3 turned up & I was lucky enough to get in on one at the source.............great tune IMHO. Russ
  4. ......... !!!! Russ

  6. JM's prices, both in auctions & the price guide, are just that, a guide...........everyone I deal with in the UK is more than aware that John can get more for a record than most & i have never come across anyone asking Johns finishing prices for the same items personally. I do think that on certain discs in Johns auctions, people are just plain lazy & with a little effort could get them cheaper else where, altho' not all. There was a disc recently in auction & at the same time on ebay, same disc in similar condition ended at half the finishing price of JM.........it was not listed as Northern Soul, but with very little effort could have been tracked down. I think John provides a great service on the whole & there are records that do not normally hit the open market occasionally, its down to the individuals to decide what these discs are worth to them. I think what Paul is saying is that other dealers then try to get the same price & this is not always realistic in the real world...........I personally would avoid them if Im not happy with this situation. With certain discs tho, it may be the only opportunity you may ever have to own said disc so you bite the bullet & go for it, if you have the funds. Another side of this is, people who pay well over the odds in ebay auctions, for discs that are readily available in the UK at reasonable set sale prices on websites in the UK........complete laziness. Two records that have taken off recently down south & have now appeared on play lists in other parts of the country are both cheap records, that were available for well under fifty quid in the UK, so I think people should maybe do a little research & stop chasing the same records. I played a record at the 100 Club at the weekend that cost me ten quid last week.........at least half a dozen people enquired about it & the dance floor was rammed. Russ
  7. There is also a white 12 Erect boot, which also has 'Overdose of Joy' on too. Russ
  8. Mark, with the greatest respect, I went to both Wigan & Yate, probably spent more time at Wigan tho to be fair, but, even you must realise that a lot of things that were first played at Yate, travelled northwards & in the mists of time have become 'Wigan' plays. I dont think you can really compare the two venues, they were both brilliant in there own way & more to the point Yate was not trying to emulate Wigan, it had its own identity, with its own sounds, but back to the point, many original Yate plays from the likes of Ian Clark particularly went on to become Wigan classics. And for those people that suggest Wigan was crap after whatever date..........bollox, RS IMHO didnt really come into his own until 78/79, again my opinion, but this was RS golden era IMHO & lets not forget that RS later Wigan plays, were also spun by him at Stafford & other venues after Wigan closed. Im not really one for nostalgia with regards to past venues, because 'soul' life goes on, this play list is more of a promotional tool & not really a true reflection & as with all venues there are records played that are 'of the time' that dont look or sound as good X many years down the line. For Trev...........yes, get over Wigan agreed, but without a doubt Wigan was special in every way, warts & all & shouldnt be trivialised when reflecting on the history of NS. There have been venues past & present that have been musically as good, but nothing could compare to a Wigan Casino Allnighter as a whole experience.........without sounding 'wet' as a youngster I was reduced to tears on more than one occasion as the final tunes were played...........it was a truly, truly awesome venue, yes, its in the past so lets not harp on about it constantly & I for one am a great beleiver in a progressive NSS that constantly evolves musically, but I think we should treat the venue with the respect that it deserves in NS history. Lecture over. Russ Russ
  9. I agree completely Marc...........if I was a little better off this month I would have had this no probs, however it will be mine one day. Russ
  10. I spoke directly with the seller via email & asked how many turned up, he was evasive in as much as he would not be specific with numbers stating 'several copies', I emailed again asking if he could be more specific & received no reply. 12. And that is high praise indeed from Mr Flynn.......you would think soul records of this calibre would fly out........maybe people would rather wait & pay ten times the price in a few years..........oh well, each to thier own. 16. Clouds was in Edinburgh Derby Kings Hall Droyelsdon Colony Club - Newbury Bisley in the 7ts....think this was a nighter ???? The Mariner/Sound Barrier in Portsmouth Blue Lagoon Portsmouth had a handful of Nighters Winsford Wilton Hinckley Boy's Club Rob Marriots Soul Power Nighters in Mansfield BTW The Blue Orchid is still there.......was a night club in the 8ts, now a Hotel, with great function rooms.......ideal for a Nighter still. There were also a few Modern Soul Nighters at the 100 Club in the 8ts, maybe 9ts. I remember a friend telling me, that almost every major city had a Nighter back in the day, not all attended exclusively by the mainstream Nighter crowd, but all with a similar music policy. I also remember researching the 'Birdcage' in Eastney, Portsmouth, which is mentioned on the back of the 'New Relegeon' LP, for an article & going to Portsmouth Library to try & find some paper clippings for adverts from the Portsmouth news, when I was speaking with the librarian about this, a gentlemen who had overheard the conversation, took me to one side & gave me a brilliant insight into the place..............turned out he was squad & was in charge of the first raid there !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. The local Royal Marines from the Eastney Barracks used to do the security on the door, when the Police raided the place, 'the bootnecks' wouldnt let the squad in & it all kicked off, allowing the local Mods enough time to get rid of any incriminating evidence.
