  1. Cliff is the bollox.............but hardly up & coming, he's been around a pretty long time (sorry Cliff), would like to see him get a regular Nighter gig tho' . Russ
  2. John Legend . Russ
  3. This was originally played years ago by Terry Jones at the Norfolk Village, at the time Im pretty certain it was only available on a dodgy Belgium comp. I heard it & got the details off TJ, but was unable to source the CD, this was pre ebay remember. Eventually I found the CD through Pete Lowrie & cut several acetates which were placed with prominent DJ's, the rest as they say is history. One of the tunes that was huge at the Abshott Soul Nights for me, & at its peak it was pressed up as a white label. I'm pretty sure its Diana Ross on lead vocal, Im not normally a fan of Ms Ross's vocal ability, but this is one of her finest cuts IMO. Russ
  4. Soundfile pse. Russ
  5. It can be done mate............we just need solidarity & a great outlook like ya fine self, we all do the door & if necessary clean the poopers n sweep the floor before we lock up in the morning & hey, as well as some tasty guests, there's more than enough room for youngsters like ya self who really inspire us old uns, thank you for your support mate & keep ya ears n eyes open for a suitable venue in your neck of the woods, a little 100 Club would do fine, not that Im asking for much.......... see ya next week at the 100 Club ???. Best Russ
  6. I have been saying for some time that we need a little Nighter in Portsmouth/Southampton or the South Coast area to allow some of the great DJ's & collectors locally the opportunity to air thier wares on a regular basis. We will never have a huge Nighter down here, apart from anything else there is not the support for a night that will provide something a little different, but a small, intimate club, that holds a couple of hundred, held every other month or even quarterly could work. I have been looking for such a venue for some time, but cant find anything quite right, the music has to be of prime importance, but the venue will make or break it, ANYONE who knows of a venue that would be suitable for such a venture in the area, please get in touch, Im quite prepared to promote it or if anyone has any ideas also co promote, so lets get the likes of Tim, Steve C, Dave Abbott, Simon Preston, Jonah & others spinning at one cool venue regularly, you never know, we may even tempt a few travellers aswell, I did it before with Newbury & we can do it again, despite the glut of average events all over the country there is room for a quality Nighter down these parts. Im prepared to stick my neck out, but I genuinely need help to find that special place to truly rock the souls of the South Coast Massive again & get the guys with the tunes a regular gig & to dig even deeper to entertain us. I wait in anticipation. Russ
  7. Not sure why your replying, I kinda agree with you ??????????. Russ
  8. I agree, but as you know Tim doesnt travel, in fact makes quite a point of not needing to travel, so even if asked Im not sure he would agree to DJ outside of the area. The other side of that is, most of the people attending nights on the South Coast very rarely go any where else at all & certainly very rarely, if ever attend Allnighters, so whilst I agree that on the South Coast these guys are doing the business, the punters have very little else to compare with. Having said all of that I think Tim has done some great sets recently & very worthy of a mention. Russ
  9. I know I was there, but Im talking wider exceptance on the mainstream NS scene..........Im sure your a really nice bloke, but unfortunately you do come over as a bit of a 'know it all sometimes'........ Happy New Year Russ
  10. Dave Abbott is the bollox, top tunes, but his attitude stinks ..............this man seriously need a regular gig to fully appreciate his great collection & taste. Russ
  11. Yeah, I know Paul, but it did take 30 years to find its way oooooopp north .......its a reactivated oldie for us Suvverners !!!!.......kudos mate, but just pleased its getting the widest possible audience eventually..........Happy New Year. Regards Russ
  12. Not sure if Ady still owns the Eddie Holland acetate Bob, was a huge record at the 100 Club some years ago, dont have any other info i'm afraid, but its a fantastic piece of soul IMO & if you were considering moving the acetate on PM me. I'm sure Ady will pass on any info he has on this. HNY Russ
  13. Ok how about these: Roy Roberts on Sugar, had plays but due to explode shortly. Again, Superlatives c/up just needs a wider audience to really gooooooooooooooooooooo Phil Wainwrights Bob Collins & the Mighty Ryders- Emotion C/up.......again, needs a wider audience, now I have secured a copy, hopefully I can help too !!!!! Also from Phil & Johnny Beggs Magenta - Running Back to You Another left fielder from Johnny, Evans Pyramid, not every ones cuppa cocoa, but gets right under ya skin !!!!. A cheapie that seems to be catching peoples attention when I spin it is PJ Smith - Hold On To It...........probably had plays over the years, but never exploded like it deserves imo. And is this the year for Wes Black - I Feel Good.........I wish it was, but alas, maybe still too modern for the moment to go mainstream monster, altho' it stomps like a mutha !!!. Have a hoofin' 2009 & see ya around the bizarres........... Russ
  14. .............Just right for today, as they say & sounds f***ing hard as nails over a hoofin' system...........in fact I would go as far as to say, the clip in the comfort of your home really doesnt do this justice, ya gotta be of ya tits, giving it some welly, with ya ears being pinned to the back wall & ya heart beating to rythmn.........with a couple o hundred like minded souls..............ahhhhhhhhh heaven ! Russ
  15. Well, I always was the crappest record hunter in Nato !!!!..............thats probably the copy I have now . Russ
  16. Been played off & on for a while now, Dave Abbott has the same disc covered up as Voices Inc - Thinking Again........not sure about rareity etc, but shit does it move, melikeeeeeeeee lots & deserves to be be heard more widely, Mr Abbott certainly raised the roof at a few venues at the end of last year with this belter. Happy New Year Chalkmeister Russ

  18. Nik, I have a contact in VA who collects Va Labels, real long shot to be honest & even when i lived in VA I still ended up buying my copy from the UK, but I'll try him & let you know. I reckon if you can find one its gonna be over a grand now...........good luck. Speak soon. Russ
  19. Dave Abbotts Voices Inc - Thinkin' Again............C/UP huge & hope it goes all the way. Russ
  20. Well, as you know Nick, big plays for me with Mae Young last year............Mr Thorley did the honours for me, Steve C, also picked up on it too, seems to be getting a real following now.......... WC............always a classic tune & one i have been lucky enough to have owned for some time........maybe a second wind with this. I'll have to get back with my tips for this year, but pleased to see you guys are listening . Russ
  21. I saw her in the States a couple of years ago & like last night her voice had gone, she gave a great performance, but the vocals were cringe worthy..............towards the end of the show, she was that unsteady on her feet she slipped, fell & really banged her head a good un on an amp, I thought it would be an A&E job, but like the true professional she is, she finished the show, Jenny & I said at the time, she should retire with some dignity, she has nothing to prove...............she nailed it all years ago. Thought Ruby Turner was the bomb last night............brilliant !!!. Happy New Year Russ
  22. Good to see this having a new lease of life............another old Newbury Nighter spin, great tune. Would also like to see Dave Thorley's Superlatives c/up continue to grow in stature..........hoofin' tune. Russ
