Would say £50 - £60 max for U.S. nowadays. Not seen the German one, but presume price would be similar, maybe slightly more (unless its got a pic sleeve?) Mace

If its jumping because of a scratch try lightly scraping a needle/pin through each affected groove under a magnifying glass to recut the path that the stylus follows (angle the needle at about 45 degrees and go in both directions over scratch ....be careful...it can go horribly wrong if you 'cross' grooves by accident It generally works effectively enough to enable the record to play....if you dig too deep by accident you can sometimes hear a slight noise when the stylus passes over the spot, but considering the speed of the rotation it's usually hardly noticeable (especially for DJing) Same method can be used for slight ticks dues to scratches, bubbles etc in vinyl. As with previously mentioned methods...try it on an inexpensive record first of all.

Totally agree Jayne, but my reference to 'hype' wasn't just about peoples expectations of a good night or reviews of the event via feedback. It's about the promoter delivering what they advertise (as in DJs/artists/rooms/venue times etc), and if you can't deliver (for whatever reason, and there are lots of valid reasons) then at least let the paying public know in advance if possible. Again, not specific to any venue....but some of the big successfull venues can be as guilty of this as the smaller less successfull venues are of hyping themselves up with 'mates reviews' etc......all misleading IMO.
-
Oh you give up too easily......

If the promoters of said soul nights agreed to shut shop at 1.00 a.m. latest then I'd say everybody would be a winner....but it'll never happen will it . Also, its very difficult to get an allnighter at a decent venue as it is, to only want to book from midnight onwards has an impact on the venues business in respect of staffing hours/bar takings/room hire fee etc
-
True, but since licensing hours changed some soul nights now go on till 3.00 a.m. etc so who would travel to an allnighter afterwards?

Not a dig at all Andy....thought I was the paranoid one Middleton is one of the busier regular allnighters on the circuit, and I used Kings Hall and Prestatyn as references cus they are obviously bigger and busier....again not a dig of any kind. My point was, that you said you had clashed with every venue going and still kept your numbers. My comparison is therefore based on the 'scenario' of what would happen if you clashed with either Kings Hall or Prestatyn...regardless of the fact that you are on good terms with the relative promoters of both events or whether you would be daft enough to clash with them. In that sense the smaller events that have clashed with you would suffer in the same way....and I didn't blame you for the effect of such. I know you have offered reduced admission for people attending local events that have clashed with you, and at the end of the day the promoters of such events should consider the effect of clashing with bigger and more popular events before deciding to go ahead with the event....make your bed and all that..... However, with all the will in the world these clashes happen, sometimes accidentally, sometimes mischeviously, but the end results of such clashes are not (imo) fair evaluations of those events in regards to venues, DJs etc etc. As for threads pushing events on here, yes I agree, there is plenty of 'false' hype about venues and lots don't deliver what they promise, feedbacks can be misleading....part and parcel of promoting any product I suppose...and plenty of the big successful events are as guilty of it as anyone else.....not another dig at you either
-
To be honest though Andy, besides the fact that you get on well with the promoters of the likes of Kings Hall Stoke or Prestatyn, I doubt you would risk clashing with either of these events cus it would have an impact on your attendance. You have a great venue and promotion at Middleton, but smaller events that are close to your venue will undoubtably suffer if they clash with you. To say that these venues aren't good enough or don't deliver ain't really a fair comment, they might not be able to compete with your venue or line-up, but when stood on there own merits may well be quality events. Clashing never helps anyone, but it happens and there will always be winners and losers. Totally agree that it's mainly soul nights that seem to be suffering. Then again you don't get as many travellers to soul nights, and lots of those who returned to the scene a few years back after 20 years absence seem to be dwindling away again imo. Don't see that as a bad thing to be honest, smaller clubs will hopefully flourish and the music will probably start to progress at a decent rate again instead of being the same old tunes churned out week in week out.

Paul, is there any chance of letting us know deadline for Jan/Feb issue of OTS? Also a contact number if possible? P.S. are you thinking of re-launching 'Collectors corner' sometime in the future? Sorting my info to send to ya right now pal...

Anybody Lost Any Records At Ronnie Walker , Cis ?
Mace replied to Headsy's topic in Look At Your Box
Any chance of posting a list of the record labels, as I suspect most probably wouldn't realise owt was missing for a while? Least that way it could jog somebodies memory (unless they are on obscure one off labels of course...wouldn't want you to be inundated with a load of chancers making false claims ) -
They will be apearing live at The Brookfields Club (The Stables) just off M6 J11, Wolverhampton on Saturday 26th January. Tickets are available from New Century Soul via website below. www.newcenturysoul.co.uk Believe they are selling well, so I wouldn't hang around as think numbers are restricted to 380 max or thereabouts. Hope this helps Regards Mace

......I wouldn't quote the part about 'the legendary Torch club (Hanley)' if it need to be factual tho

That stutters getting worse Joe

I had an issue which I sold for £100 a few weeks back. Tis harder than the promo mind.

At the Stafford reunion in Burslem a few years ago we had to have 10 doormen throughout the night. Door bill alone was over £1200+ If they do insist on you increasing the amount of doorstaff your hire, then try and sort it so the extra body is only working the hours necessary (ie 11 p.m. - 3 a.m.) when your venue is at it's busiest, and when there is more chance of any local knobheads trying to get in.
-
.....but if they run the risk of hassle from stopping pissheads getting in from off the street and working unsociable hours (especially at allnighters) then it ain't that great a wage. If your boss asked you to work all Saturday night and risk getting the odd slap from a pisshead for £15 an hour I bet you'd tell him/her bollox
