Should all be mixed in the one room IMO. Always been my opinion and that's the format I set out for Bidds from day one, and the reason why I've never opened the 2nd room at Bidds just for R&B. 2nd and 3rd rooms always seem to suffer from erratic attendances throughout the night, whether they be playing R&B, Modern, or Rare Soul. The thing I have noticed over the last year or so, is that a large proportion of those into R&B who were up for as much unknown R&B tunes as possible, now seem to have absorbed as much as they can take.....a bit like overfull soggy sponges It seems as though they want to continually hear all the same big R&B tunes that have been played out over the last 5 years or so....very similar to the oldies fanatics on the Northern scene. The turnover of 'new' tunes from the DJs on the R&B scene is much faster than the current Northern scene, and I don't honestly think a lot of those who are into it want to keep up the pace as much nowadays. There is without doubt, a lot of shite that gets played out in this process.....but there are still plenty of R&B gems being, and yet to be discovered that will eventually find there way into main room Northern events. I would also agree that stand alone R&B events like The Hideaway and Pow Wow are better attended and received than '2nd room' events. However, I also feel that you seem to be on some sort of crusade with the R&B thing of late Simon, particularly with Barnsley. Perhaps you should chill out a bit and trust the promoters to make the decisions that they feel most comfortable with?

You must spend wayyy longer than me on ebay to find that Pete! Don't know who the seller is, but mines the middle one on the bottom row...it was compiled for a CD Swap on the Modculture site in 2006. Ironically I've not got a copy myself.... so might have to snipe it

£30 tops nowadays.

Gutted you only have 3 mate..... looking for some 16" wheel trims for my black Mercedes Vito Van and these would have looked the dogs... Do you know anyone with a Reliant Robin with oversized wheels....

Thing is though Michael, as has already been mentioned, some of these titles are not expensive as originals....so buyers/bidders will be less cautious of such 45s. Some dealers may well list them up without mentioning 'repro' etc in description, and bidders could end up paying £20+ or so for a repro of a £40 record thinking they have bagged a bargain. I know for a fact that some of these titles have fetched $30+ when they were first listed on ebay (as auctions not 'buy it nows'), when you could order them from the likes of Piccadilly Records in Manchester the same day for £5.99.

Happen to know if they are legit, or boots?

I've got an original Gene Thompson on Ace.....that is one hard record to find on original. I believe some of these were done in runs of 500.
-
Dunno mate, suppose you could say the same about records like Benny Spellman - Fortune Teller which were pressed up in abundance. They probably get a 500 run done for about $1 a 45, if they sell 'em all at £6 each over the 4 titles I mentioned above.... thats over £10,000 PROFIT..... Even if they only clear half the stock, that's still well over £4000 profit. Now imagine doing that with 30 or 40 popular 45s.....

There are quite a few lookalike R&B repros being knocked out recently (presumably from the same source as Charles Sheffield) inc Piney Brown 'Sugar in my tea' on Mad, Freddy King 'Now I've got a woman' on Federal and Harold Burrage 'She knocks me out' on Vivid. Scans look very good (presuming they are not scans of the originals), not seen any in the flesh, but pretty sure these are gonna be causing some problems for ebay/internet purchases....

Have you heard the version by The Playboys on Satin? Way better IMO....very similar backing but vocals are so much better

£100 - £120 IMO Pete. Not sure if promo is rarer than issue, but it's a hard record to find and a great version. Regards Mace

This is new to me, I haven't claimed for records (missin or broken) for a long time prior to the latest £20 affair, but previously understood that Royal Mail accepted valuations from legitimate/respected sources (Manships/Record Collector etc) Surely the insurance payment is to replace the item that they lost or broke....under normal cicumstances they/you would have to pay book price to do that? The fact that you bagged it from ebay/car boot/record fair for peanuts or have had it for 30 years and thus paid a lot less than it is now worth shouldn't come into it? Thats like claiming £200K off your building insurance cus your house burnt down and been told you could only have £15K cus that's what you paid for it in 1977

This is true, but should imagine trying to claim with no proof of signature would be a nightmare. On saying that, I recently sent a £20 record via recorded delivery to some-one that never arrived. Contacted the Royal Mail 'track & trace' number, who informed me that the package had been signed for with 2 other packages by a R A Foster at the address I sent it to...they then sent me a copy of signature by this name for all 3 packages. Obviously not the guys name who I sent it to, and he know no-one of that name and doesn't live in shared accomodation/flats etc. He tried contacting them and got the same story....eventually he emailed me and said he couldn't be arsed arguing with Royal Mail and that he knew I'd posted it so would suffer the loss. I obviously believe he never got it, and told him I'd split the loss as don't see why he should lose out for the full amount either....but added that I would first try Royal Mail again. I figured that the other 2 special delivery items that were signed for by R A Foster at the same time, would be at a different address...seeing as I had photocopies of the signed slips of all 3 packages I also had reference numbers for all 3 packages. I put this to Royal Mail, who said they could not divulge details of the other items as I had not sent them....however, they checked their system again, and my package was now showing that it had NOT been delivered (even though they had previously sent me a copy of signature for receiving it!!!!) The girl I spoke to then told me that it was also showing a history of originally being delivered, even though it now said different, and that she had never seen anything like that on the system before. This obviously throws doubt on the whole signature system....kind of wondering if it's a dodgy postie who had signed for stuff himself? Anyway, I have had to fill in a claim form and send it off, stating 'denial of signature' or similar. Complete pisstake really.....but going back to 'proof of postage' scenario, how hard would that be without signatures and reference numbers!

Hoping to go J17 for a few hours before Burnley Keith.
-
Keith, I wouldn't send anything less than recorded nowadays...even if it ends up costing me extra. Worse case is you're down 75p...better that than £12. If you send stuff 2nd class recorded it's slightly cheaper, usually arrives as quick as first class and I'm sure its insured to same amount as first class recorded.

Kinnell! It must have been good......... :D

He could, but I'd probably not be able to help out much...didn't save any copies (even for myself) and the P.C. I had them all saved on 'threw a seven' a few years back. Have got a couple of copies of the 'Face full of Mace' and 'Rhythm & Soul Set Reunion' CDs knocking about if any of you guys want 'em just P.M. me and I'll fling 'em in the post for you as freebies. Happy New Year to all Regards Mace

Surely any young blood (DJ's or not) crossing over from the Mod scene onto the Northern scene should be encouraged? Of course they will initially prefer R&B, Rhythm & Soul, Latin and 60s stuff because that's what they have been listening to prior to attending Northern events. With so few youngsters on the soul scene surely all should be encouraged? Callum has recently started attending more and more Northern events (Lifeline, Burnley etc) and has been overwhelmed with the music he is hearing....especially from the likes of Karl Heard. Who knows what music will float his boat in years to come.....maybe even 70s stuff? There are waaayyy too many blinkers on the soul scene as it is, if you ain't gonna approve of youngsters crossing over from the Mod or Scooter scenes....just where are you gonna find them from? So to balance things out, are there any youngsters doing the business on the 70s or Modern scene. I know of Sean Livesy of course, perhaps you can throw some names in the mix to even things out....surely a more positive input to what could be an interesting thread?

There was a certain U.S. dealer who listed a Betty Everett on ebay a few times earlier this year, but it never met it's reserve. Denbo eventually bought it off him at the Austin Show, for a fair bit lower than his ebay reserve from what I recall.

After he reluctantly sold me his Jimmy Phillips on Bumps some 6 months ago, and then gave me a £40 record for nowt the week after, it seems only fair to me
