  1. Doubt you'll get Killas copy, he was after it for ages until he eventually prised it from Ted Couldstones DJ box. Got mine for £20 off Des Parker when it was still pretty well unknown, not as though that snippet of info will help you much
  2. I wish every allnighter was cancelled for the rest of 2010. At least that would put a stop to all the moans, groans and 'wish lists' type threads that have been dominating this site for the last week or so. Fcukin' sad state of affairs if you ask me.........
  3. Apparently If so, where..... and by whom, cus I'm not aware of anyone ever playing L Neefs at a northern Allnighter. Or is this another one of your 'definately happened' posts that end up being of dubious authenticity?
  4. Andy Dyson should always take full credit for first playing JT Parker mate.....however, now Gingers playing it to the masses it will no doubt break away from the 'tag' of Rare Soul or R&B shite, get main room action at Kings Hall and become a Northern MONSTER Bless......
  5. I actually said Rockin'....... Uptempo early R&B with dirty big sax breaks and the like. These type of records shouldn't be played in Northern rooms, and as far as I'm aware, they generally never are. There may be the odd few that slip the net, but you could say the same about every other genre of music that makes up the Northern scene ('Sister James' anyone?) Trouble is, those who so readily dismiss R&B don't seem to be able to distinguish between those sort of tunes and a great fat slab of dancefloor dynamite such as J.T. Parker........so they dismiss it all.......unless it has been firmly stamped in some past decade with the Northern Soul seal of approval (Larry Davies 'Hurt so many times' and Ray Agee 'I'm losing again' are prime examples) Why were such records accepted so easily back then?...maybe cus most people on the scene didn't have the huge hang-ups they have nowadays and DJs didn't spoonfeed the scene with the top 500 week in week out.
  6. The mid to late 80s Mod scene was pulling new tunes from all sorts of sources to be honest. A lot of Northern and R&B from 100 Club and Stafford was crossing over, and there was shed loads of latin/boogaloo being discovered. I was personally buying tunes from soulies in Stoke (Butch, Jim Bates, Tim Ashibende, Keith Minshull, Blondie etc) So for my part the Northern scene was certainly feeding my hunger for tunes. Dom Bassett and Rob Messer were obviously sourcing stuff from the 100 Club and the older mods such as Paul Hallam & Shirley. Dave Darlow from Scarborough used to turn out masses of tapes with new tunes, not sure where hes was getting his stuff but he was on top of his game. Back to for the R&B angle, I remember buying Jimmy Preacher Ellie on Jewel of Butch for about £15 around this time, along with Freddie North 'The hurt' and Joe Douglas on Playhouse. The categories were far less important back then, it was either good or bad music.....surely the way it should be? I never go out and hear a full night of tunes I like.....I don't know if I would want to if the truth be to. I'd rather get the chance to hear something I didn't like for the first time, than something I do for the millionth I had some blurt at Rugby telling me that the current Rare Soul events were just playing 2nd class B sides and the music had no feeling. It's the folks who want to hear the same old same old who have lost the feeling in my opinion. Carry on living your 'groundhog day' routine week in week out...can't imagine how you ever got into this scene if you never want to hear anything different to be honest.............
  7. Webby, any chance you could list up your top 25 or so NS tunes.....records that really float your boat, drag you out onto the floor at any allnighter and totally fulfill your soul, so we get some idea of your personal taste in Soul music. This is a genuine question and not intended for use as keyboard ammo against you. It's just that, whilst I understand R&B is not to everyones taste, especially the more Rockin' varity (which I think we ALL agree shouldn't be played at NS events) I struggle to understand how anyone into soul music can be so dismissive of the gritty soul tunes that are more accurately representative of 60s R&B. For example, are you saying that none of the grittier Atlantic/Stax catalogue has ever appealed to you. ...and what of the Duke/Peacock catalogue......from Bobby Blands vast output, to the likes of Bud Harper etc. If we are to discuss R&B that has been accepted on the NS scene since it's earliest days then these are surely significant starting points, rather than a random selection of 3 tunes that you dislike, and the mud slinging that follows Regards Mace
  8. Doo-Wop? Are you serious.....or are you just pulling more genres (of which you obviously know very little about) out of thin air?
  9. More to the point, does anybody still actually play these tracks out...........? If so, I'd personally file them under 'Overplayed oldies'.....
  10. Got a spare Ex cond copy for sale @ £50. Should be in my sales box tonight Fingers...

    Dean Francis

Tippin' ? Big spin for Johnny Beggs at Bidds from a few years back.....nice to see these tunes breakin' through
  12. Alfie, I am not comparing the different versions on their value or rarity, but simply on the version itself. The vocals on the Los Fulanos version of UIBYLI are a lot weaker than Bobby Valentins imo, and the singer sounds like he is struggling the get all the words out in time. As I said, they would sound great live in a small sweaty club. The value of the originals of Bobby Valentin and Hector Rivera are only so high because of the demand from the Northern & Mod scenes, they are not as rare as their value would lead you to believe, and are overpriced simply because of supply and demand. All imo of course... Regards Mace
  13. Think Des Parker has got a Lee Rogers for sale? Regards Mace
  14. They are both great versions, and I'd love to see them performed live in a small packed venue.....but c'mon, they are not as good as the originals. Incidentally, do any of those saying they prefer these versions own the originals?
  15. One just sold on ebay for $105 with no decent keywords in the title or description and listed in the blues section....auction link below. https://cgi.ebay.com/HAYES-WARE-I-WANT-TO-BUMP-C-J-45-RPM-MINT_W0QQitemZ200453516082QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item2eabf5eb32 Hard to find funk edged soul 45 on Carl Jones Chicago based label C.J. Records Excellent condition vinyl with clean crisp labels. £60 with free shipping if paypal payment sent as a gift. Please P.M. to reserve. Regards Mace
  16. It actually says Rhythm & Blues on the tin.....if you want to be exact about it....
  17. Wasn't actually aiming that comment at you Ged, but glad you bit anyway I'm referring to DJs who get the opportunity to play something different at an 'Upfront' event and still play the same old records. There's nowt wrong with playing predominately oldies at an oldies night etc cus that's what you have been booked to do. I believe that the problem lies with DJ sets being dictated by the dancefloor.......previous comments on this thread about not dancing to something that you've never heard before highlight this point IMO. Mind you, I hardly ever dance but I do tap my foot and stroke my chin a lot
  18. It's not replacing owt Ged, it's a one off event, 25 years on, in the original venue. We've made no secret of the music policy, reading the Stafford thread surely clarifies that? The third room has been added to include the 'Spirit of Stafford' policy, but I bet 90% of those questioning the main room music policy spend most of their night in the main room If it was gonna be a night of newies/obscurities it would probably attract 200-300 max. Basically, this event would not be feasible under that concept....so you either want to take a trip down memory lane or you don't. It's not like it's gonna happen again in 12 months, and is highly unlikely to ever happen again. I'm all for hearing new stuff...fact is there are very few venues doing just that.....even less making any sort of success out of it. Even more DJs who profess to wanting to hear new stuff and still play the same old same old. Regards Mace
  19. $10 million starting bid. Zero feedback. Who's up for bidding then.......? https://cgi.ebay.com/LET-THE-LITTLE-GIRL-DANCE-BY-DEE-TORRES-ON-DORE-REC_W0QQitemZ320504265986QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item4a9f8afd02
  20. Des Parker was telling me he'd seen some-one selling empty sleeves at an event somewhere recently, sure he said they were between £1 - £5 a sleeve depending in rarity (ie Dearborn sleeves are tough to find) Then I saw this on ebay tonight... https://cgi.ebay.com/LOT-of-200-45-RPM-RECORD-COMPANY-SLEEVES-empty-sleeves_W0QQitemZ120545718658QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item1c1115b182 I know there are lots of repro sleeves on the market, but it seems some collectors definately want the authentic sleeve to go with the original 45..................
  21. I've got a lovely clean copy that I have in my sales box @ £350. Don't want any paypal funds at moment though, so would be willing to knock some off for cash. P.M. me if interested....but no silly offers please.
  22. £250 is about right for a mint copy to be honest. I'd buy 'em all day long at £150
  23. Suppose it depends on whether you want it to play out at Northern events, or because you collect Latin Boogaloo. If its for the first reason, then it's time may well have come and gone.....if it's for the second reason, then it's timeless classic that will always sound the business
  24. Probably so Tim, but that doesn't mean it's only worth £40. There are a couple of cheaper European releases, but regardless of flipsides, Fania is the ONLY label to have it on IMO
