Killa always cracks me up with sales. He describes everything in his box as 'brilliant that Mace, have a listen' Quick listen later, and telling him it's not my sort of thing he'll say 'I know, it's fcuking shite ain't it' Johnny Beggs has the classic line........ 'Butch doesn't know it, Tim Ashibende doesn't know it, Andy Dyson doesn't know it, etc etc etc etc'

Soul drummers didn't come out on U.K. London. 'Mercy mercy baby' did, but with the flip 'Acid' regards Mace

Hi Phil. Anywhere between 100 - 150 usually mate. Regards Mace

That quote pretty much sums it up for me Simon You are also spot on when you say that Bidds isn't gonna be everybodies cup of tea....we are far too diverse in our playlists to gain any sort of major popularity vote. What surprises me quite often, is the folk that do latch on to Bidds, are not necessarily those that you'd expect to. I noticed that Andy Dyson recently posted that he loves all aspects to this scene, from Kings Hall to Bidds. A great comment that highlights how far removed from the 'normally accepted' side of the scene, Bidds is, whilst still having it's roots firmly in the scene.............oh, and both events are in Stoke.......nuff said See ya back there in 5 months then...

Daz, you came onto this thread with the opening quote... "Oh god this is so tempting to just join in this debate and once and for all say it like it really is and no not just in mho but most peoples opinion, just that most would sooner not upset the status quo whereas others (myself included) are so sick and tired and fooked off at being told that we should progress and actually listen to the new stuff........well we/i have and its shit!!" You honestly don't think that's aggresive?, but you think that me suggesting you stick to going to oldies events, cus that's obviously your preference, is aggresive? Your quote below certainly reads as though you prefer oldies...... "Narrow minded? yes i am as far as my music is concerned, i dont want to "move on and progress" i was/am happy with the way it used to be. i.e going to any venue over a weekend with a rammed attendance knowing your gonna listen to class music, not leaving until the end, and not leaving with a sense of thinking WTF was that all about. Now if i am wrong and todays scene is all about going to venues knowing that there will be only a couple of hundred there at best, and that your only going to listen to a smattering of northern and then it will be because its deemed to be one of a few known originals and guess what i have it and you dont then to be quite honest you can shove it!! i will stick to my "nostalgia" nighters as one put it on here once" You say you want to say it how you see, but find it disrespectful for anybody else to say it as they see it? How does that work then? You also say, and I quote... "You dont seem to respect anybody elses view unless it fits in with your "progressive across the board music" policy" Sorry, but I have no idea what a "progressive across the board music" policy is...your words, not mine? I certainly don't have any issues on you championing your preferred choice of music, but do have an issue when you say... " listen to the new stuff........well we/i have and its shit" That's not aggressive or disrespectful either then..... Pot, kettle, black....... As far as you thinking I've taken your post as a pop at my tastes or the Bidds promotion then you obviously don't know me. I'm as thick skinned as a rhino. I love many aspects of this scene. My collection consists of plenty of big Northern Oldies as well as obscure soul / R&B / Latin etc etc etc My tastes are extremely varied and my mind is very open to both old and new. I'm no fan of 70s or crossover however....so I wouldn't go out of my way to attend an event that was obviously going to overloaded with that genre of music. However, I do attend events where 70s & Crossover is played in equal doses to those genres that I prefer. It matters not, nothing will ever be perfect. I certainly don't come on here after such events complaining about what should and shouldn't have been played. Your lookbacks of events do. If you disagree then go back and read some of them. You have since stated that all allnighters are failing because of playing too many tunes that you and the rest of the (silent) scene don't agree with, and that these events should play mainly oldies to regain their popularity and swell their attendance figures....again, your quote.. "people are trying to get to understand why venues are failing and numbers are falling.......well there is your answer, get the music played back to mainly "oldies" and you will have your numbers back along with proper nighters" Can honestly tell me that you don't think that's disrespectful, especially the comment on 'proper nighters' Respectfuly Mace

Story of your life eh mate Besides which, as they say, any holes a goal / any port in a storm etc etc etc.... Okay...no more off-topic from me....
-
Ah, you misquoted me....naughty naughty.... I actually said... "A good 'unknown' record is still a good record though....and chances are it will pass through the rare scene onto the oldies scene and not the other way around." There is also a good chance it might not.....this does not make it substandard....wet sponges can only absorb so much more fresh water.

I know, you've told us this before. But please answer me.......who are all these mods/ex mods DJing at Rare Soul Allnighters....this certainly ain't the case in the Midlands/Northwest.....are you referring to London? Though I once heard a rumour that SoulSam was a mod in the 40s...does that count You say you don't want the same old same old, but you don't want any R&B or Latin....... you do want funk, or anything new that has a familier dancebeat as long as it's good northern soul and not too different to the norm...oh, and it's not played out by mods or ex mods.......think I've got it now.... Glad to hear you've got thousands of rare soul discs.....perhaps you should ask Rob H to give you a spot at his new do? Even better, out of all these records can you give us 10 examples of newer unknown stuff you would like to hear out at Allnighters. Surely this is the best way to clarify your point?
-
There is a divide between the rare and the oldies scenes. A good 'unknown' record is still a good record though....and chances are it will pass through the rare scene onto the oldies scene and not the other way around.......so credit where credit's due. I think you have probably reached the point now where you only want to hear stuff that you know, or is widely accepted on the scene. Nowt wrong with that, but to insinuate those who want to hear more different stuff are chinstrokes or DJMasturbaters says more about you than them to be honest. Also, I only know a few DJs on the Rare Soul scene that have evolved from the mod scene (and by this I presume you mean the 80s/90s Mod scene) Are you referring to London/Southern based DJs ( Alan H, Chris Dale, Ady Lupton, Yann V etc?) If that is the case, then that is only a small part of the rarer side of the scene (nationally) and results in a limited comparison to the scene on the whole?
-
You missed the quote about 'quality' from my post mate. This scene was founded on playing obscure soul records that people will want to dance to. What makes you think that is any different on the rarer side of the coin? Why would a dancer not want to dance to a tune they don't know? Surely if the record is off a good quality then it deserves to be played/heard/danced to? If it's good they will dance, if it's not they won't. Plenty of the big known oldies of today probably cleared the floor the first few times they were played out. Should they have been discarded, never to be heard again? Or should DJs just play safe known records all the time?
-
Rob, virtually every post I've read of yours contains similar content, you come across as 'bitter' to say the least. But I've answered your questions sooooo......... Can I ask you a question or two? If DJing is so important to you, why don't you put on an event and fill the sets with people you don't know who want to DJ. (Basically put your money where your mouth is and see what reaction you get from the paying public) It's great to 'champion the underdog' at somebody elses expense, but would you do it at your own? If not, why not? If you have done this before...did it succeed? If so, let us know about it, is it still running? If not, why do you think it failed? Cheers Mace

Simon, most of the allnighter promoters have worked together to avoid clashes for the past few years. Most of us do speak to each other about dates. I say most, cus there will always be the odd one or two that doesn't give a flying fcuk. Dave Rimmers annual allnighter planner in events has also been beneficial to reduce clashes. Though it is always inevitable that some clashes will happen. Let's be honest, the odd clash between 2 nighters 150+ miles apart should not be a major issue. We all acknowledge that most people are put off by travelling costs of late, so events so far apart won't attract large amounts of potential attendees from the other. Also, most nighter promoters have realised that it's better to only have a max of 6 nighters a year. Not only does this reduce the lethargy of 'I can't be arsed this month, I'll go the next one', but obviously frees up some dates to reduce clashes. The days of monthly allnighters are long gone imo. The biggest issue by far (in my opinion) is the hang ups on different genres of music being played. The number of regular nighter goers is reducing all the time (age being the main factor here), to alienate some of those who still want to attend by dismissing or being negative towards different genres is a bad move as far as I can see. I'm not a fan of 70s, modern etc.......and although Bidds is predominately 60s orientated I have no issues with any of the DJs including such stuff in their sets. I would personally prefer to see the rarer side of the scene flourish by evolving to accept different tastes, than die on it's knees to protect it's original ideals. I know a good number on here will disagree with this point......but truthfully, how many of those are still regular diehard nighter goers? Regards Mace

Nor you sarcastic Joe...

It's a sad, sad day when this discussion turns to slagging off other events with a similar music policy. Seriously, what can be gained from all this? This is probably why the oldies events are usually rammed with folk just enjoying the night for what it is, whilst the rarer side of the scene bitches and fights amongst itself for a tiny slice of sweet fcuk all. I've sat on my hands for days resisting the urge to spout some shite on here.....perhaps a few others should try the same. Just stop bitching and stop biting. You've got more in common than you'd probably care to admit....channel your passion into pushing the music rather than whose event is best. If this is the way forward we might as well pack it all in now cus otherwise the scene is well and truly fcuked.

Here ya go...just found it on my esnipe account. My snipe of $28 didn't quite make the mark https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190378295127

Definately on 45. Soggy has it, as does Johnny Beggs and pretty sure Callum also has a copy. One went through ebay a month or so back for around $120
-
Unfortunately Manships price on this 45 seems to be way off. I sold one for about £50 recently, after having it in my sales box for over 12 months. A good tune but seems to be no demand for it whatsoever. Keep seeing copies on ebay as BIN for $375 or thereabouts...they never sell. Good luck, hope you get a fair price for it.
-
I'm sure most of you have seen the older clip, this is a new one posted a month ago. Great stuff.....especially the 'NO' signs he's pinned onto stuff he's not allowed to give away (the phone being one of 'em!)
-
Anyone know the realistic value of this 45. I know his other 45 on Tasty Hasty (Sookie) books for £200, and the other release of 'That don't make me mad' on Soul Time books for £100 (though pretty sure these are overpriced) Has a different flip to the Soul Time release, and presume it is the first release on the label due to label numbers (101 Play Girl / 102 That don't make me mad) Regards Mace

Sorry to say I neither want or need to sell Danny Owens at this time so you're p*ssing in the wind asking me mate;)
