  1. The music policy at scooter rallies was worlds apart from the mod scene back then....Northern was pretty much limited to the likes of Beverly Ann 'He's coming home' on the scooter rallies and don't think they had a scoobie what R&B was mid 80s....
  2. What was the phrase you used earlier in the thread about sheep, barns and horses Pete....it's an R&B record that has been accepted by the Northern Scene....no more no less...
  3. He's still out and about, saw him at Keele last year as well as a few record fairs in West Mids...usually rooting through Mick Smiths stock.....
  4. I would say the mod scene in Birmingham and Coventry never really embraced Northern Soul, certainly not to the degree that the rest of the UK mod scene did.... So if the clubs you frequented were in those areas Toad then I can appreciate your view....ironically Tony Reynolds probably now plays more Northern when he DJs than he ever did back then!
  5. I was very active on the (retro?) mod scene mid to late 80s and plenty of Northern was played....not sure where you were going but it was definitely there....in fact, a lot of the Northern 45s in my collection were bought during that period and I was DJing and promoting plenty of mod events at that time?
  6. Hmmm, not so sure....still plenty of them frequent the Northern Scene that I am aware of...probably moreso down south.....
  7. That's just wrong......pervert!
  8. Ha ha....Gav Arno reckons all the good R&B records must have a reference to either food or money in the title.....though Jungle animals, black magic and your suggestion of Cleopatra must rank pretty high. Hence an unknown 45 with the following title/artist/label.... 'Sold my monkey to the voodoo man (to buy me some grits)' by Dollar Cash & the Cents on Cleo Records. ....would have a 98% chance of being a killer R&B track!
  9. Yup Larry Davis is pure R&B and certainly lifts heavily off Willie Cobbs 'You don't love me'....it obviously fits the criteria required to make it acceptable to the Northern Soul Scene but this doesn't change its origin as a genre of music.
  10. Lest we forget that Lens first promotion was actually a 'Rhythm & Soul Club' where R&B was as evident in playlists as Northern....(I know this as I DJed at what I believe to be the first one) Actually, this isn't 100% true, it was entitled a 'RYTHM & Soul Club' on the banner hung behind the decks.....I'm guessing that whilst Len might profess to maturing more towards Soul after his teens, it was probably moreso due to the fact that he could spell SOUL a lot easier than RHYTHM...... ;o)
  11. Yes, undoubtably some stuff has been played that pushed the limits on what is acceptable to the UK soul scene....but this is no different to the extreme dross that has been played from every other genre in the pursuit of playing something different. R&B on the whole is very cool club music, but generally frowned upon by those who wish to play dreary Luther Vandross records or applaud the efforts of Pharrell Wotshisname in an effort to think that they are still cool despite losing most of their hair and teeth 10 years ago. Charles Sheffield fills oldies dancefloors as much as any Wigan Oldie and probably moreso than any Shrine Trophy piece......Rock'n'Roll.....FFS As for Northern Soul events back then, 1985 was undoubtably a more enjoyable time scenewise than 2014....not as many pidgeon holes to segregate this wonderful diverse range of soul music that we go out to celebrate each and every week.... Enjoy what ticks your boxes, take no notice of derogatory comments from the blinkered moaners and groaners that usually fester from behind keyboards every Saturday night instead of actually experiencing what is rocking the dancefloors at a variety of clubs nationwide nowadays.... Simples.
  12. Yes pal....even though it isn't s 'version' ;o)
  13. Although similar in style 'Tema De Los adolescentes' (Teenagers Theme) by Los Sonidos de F.M. isn't actually a version of 'Wade in the Water'........first played by Mik Parry and still very rare on 7" despite a handful of copies turning up last year. I played it at Lifeline last year to a packed dancefloor, only for one well known Northern DJ/Promoter to apparently moan that the scene doesn't really need another version of 'Wade in the Water'.........no, what we don't really need is second rate modern day versions of Latin Boogaloo classics as spun by same DJ/Promoter............. ;o) Ha ha....you couldn't really make it up if you tried...... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK8ZlTIyTXU
  14. He's a neckender Geese, where mums, sisters and girlfriends can be one the same...bit like Crewe without the webbed feet......
  15. Drinks like a girl....

    Chapter 5

Considered selling my UK demo a few years back but couldn't bring myself to do it.....still sounds great over a big loud system!
  17. Pete, do Royal Mail insist on Jiffy Bags as the specific brand make, or would any old pound stretcher jobbie be eligible?
  18. ha ha....sounds about right Mik, but don't think I started it off.......pretty sure I certainly posted it up on t'internet at some point to stir the pot...can't be snide on Galliant actually cus that's what mines on...
  19. I thought Galliant was supposed to be the boot.............
  20. ARVEE label John.....
  21. Another fellow Stokie with our typical dry sense of humour has been lost to the sands of time. Tony was mine and Beggsys chauffeur of choice for quite a few airport trips when Stateside bound, and Tony would pick us up on our early Monday morning return with a flask of coffee and welcoming snacks. He would also take great pleasure in telling me he'd made a handsome profit on whatever 45 he had bought from me and sold on a few months later.....bless him! Take care big man, we may have lost touch somewhat in the last 18 months, but as a fellow clayhead you were always gonna be a loveable rogue! Sleep well, will bring oatcakes to the reunion.... Regards Mace
  22. Think that's Vince Ayres who has listed that...must be a typo!
  23. Sold a plum and yellow Duke issue of Buddy Ace for £30 about 8 years ago....no hiss....not sure if any more Plum & Yellows have ever been through eBay but personally never seen another since.... Shoulda sent it to JM and paid me mortgage off!
  24. £350+ now......
  25. Sold a VG+ copy (played Ex) for £60 last year. £80 to £100 for a minter. WARNING - Don't play to grade....that 'orrible chorus stays swimming around in your head for days afterwards.....(shudder).....!!!
