This Eddie Holman Gospel album was originally released in the USA on Agape Records in the mid 80’s and on Charly Records in the UK around the same time .There must be some demand judging by the prices on Discogs ,and now Charly have reissued it to satisfy that demand .It was recorded at Sigma Sound in Philly ,with musicians such as Norman Harris and Ronnie Baker providing the backing tracks .There are 7 tracks on the album with Eddie’s trademark tenor and falsetto vocals soaring beautifully as always .The dancer “ Holy Ghost “ is a standout track ,and the lilting “ Eternal Love “ is stunning vocally .The sleevenotes by Tony Cummings are exemplary, covering both sides of the inner sleeve .

I think we messaged him at the same time mate

Just heard from George Kerr,he’s just listened to the acetate and says it’s Norma Jenkins with Sidney Barnes and was cut at Jobete in NYC
-
Might be worth asking George Kerr ,he has a good memory

Great new overview of Chris Farlowe ,now out on Charly Records .Doesn’t include the chart topping “ Out Of Time “ ( Number 1 when England won the World Cup in ‘66 ) ,but concentrates on his more Soulful album tracks and singles .Love his versions of Garnet Mimms “ Looking For You “ and “ It Was Easier To Hurt Her “ ,” Open The Door To Your Heart “ & “What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted “ are super versions .Also love his stomping “ Don’t Just Look At Me “ and a great take on Dee Dee Warwick’s “ We’re Doing Fine “ .Superb sleevenotes by Dean Rudland and lovely label scans complete a fine set .

It might be rare ,but the mix on the Ko Ko ‘45 isn’t half as good as the Japanese CD or the Grapevine 2000 / Kent singles .Im my opinion of course …. -

I guess “ Modern Soul “‘is a subjective term ,but a few I’ve heard out at places like The 100 Club and beyond …. Jax Transit Authority- Life Is A Miracle ( Covered up as The O’Jays ,and you can see why ,with the “ I Love Music “ style intro ) Doc Peabody - Here Without You - Both Sides ( beautiful mid tempo ) Love Company - Love Tempo ( big on several different scenes ) Fluorescent Smogg - All Of My Life - WG ( Known since the 80’s ,but remained rare ,beautiful falsetto led side ) Melvin Moore - All Of A Sudden ( Sky Hero ) As good as it gets Modern Soul ,known since the early 80’s … Hope this small list helps ,not played at all Northern Soul venues ,but huge records in the right places -

Scorpgemi Records was a New York based record label from the 80’s ,run by Lonnie Johnson ( not the Blues artist ) who concentrated on releasing dance records in a disco / funk / boogie style .This new 6 track compilation by the knowledgable Dean Rudland showcases 5 of those artists :The Shades Of Love ,Claudette Polite ,Leisa Dove ,Royalle Delite and Jean Jones . All the tracks are in that dated ,but great crashing disco / funk groove ,and if you are into the Boogie style beloved in Europe especially ,then this compilation is well worthy of your attention .

Another welcome album reissue by Charly Records from the GSF catalogue coming soon .Coldwater Stone - Defrost Me is a highly regarded Slow and Deep set by Freddie Briggs ,with backing vocals and writing credit by his wife Kim Briggs ( Tolliver ) which sunk without trace as GSF folded in the mid 70’s .” Outside Love Affair “ ,”Without The One You Love “ and “ End Of The World “ are all stand out tracks .Quality label scans and informative sleeve notes complete a highly regarded set .
