  1. Good memories of the Palais, I well remember the revolving dancefloor in the Bali Hi. They also had a "jungle" area down there with whicker furniture and a giant tropical beach scene on the wall, which looked amazing after dropping a tab of grey pyramid, sat there watching the tide coming in one night, very relaxing. 2. Thanks for the replies guys. I also remember Laurie DJing there on Sundays with Jimmy. There used to be a Wednesday evening session as well but can't remember who spun the records. Kev Roberts Who is a local Sutton lad gave the Rev a mention on the "Roots of northern soul" CD. I can also remember people dancing on the stage because the floor was packed. Other excellent bands that played there were "Soul Committee", a Sam & Dave style revue and "The Fantastics", 4 Tops, Temps style outfit. Have good memories of one of the Soul Committee sumersaulting from the stage onto the dancefloor. Few names I can recall are Jane Ely, Kenny Turner (great dancer), Erroll. The place itself is a health club now, Had a walk up the stairs for old times sake and the memories came flooding back, great days (nights). KOKO Yule.
  3. Hi all. Bit of a local one this for people in the Mansfield area. What memories does anyone have of the Revolution club in Sutton. This place certainly kick started a few soul carreers. Probably only held about 250 bodies but the music was top notch. If I recall correctly it ran from 67-70, a real sweatbox of a place. Saw a good few live acts there as well including, Al Green, Jimmy James, Inez & Charlie Foxx, Tammi Lynn. Was more a venue for up and coming soulers who were about to make the jump to places like the Dungeon, Wheel, Junction, beachcomber and the like. Though a few of the older lads in on a Friday night. Would love to see a photo of this place from back in the day. Keep on the good foot. Yule
  4. Well were all still going strong Ktf
  5. Hi Was there a couple of days back. Lot of building work going on in yard at the moment, there is a back entrance into the pub on the main street and an entrance into thier kitchen. Other than that can't see that the old premises of the club are being used. Think that Ham Yard is off Great Windmill St. STF Ulyssees.
  6. Here is a u tube link that shows the entrance to the old Scene club in Ham Yard Soho, often regarded as the most important club that help kickstart Mod/R&B movement in the early sixties. STF Ulyssees.
  7. HI I remember "All for you" being played as a shows theme music although I thought it was Emperor Rosco's. I alo have memories that Luxembourg's policy (in the 60's) was to only play about 2/3 of a song not the whole tune, anyone else remeber this? Remember the fellow who used to advertise his pools winning formula, his postal address was Keynsham pelt K-E-Y-N-S-H-A-M and to put you out of your misery his name was.....Horace Batchelor....now you remember. Ulysees.
  8. Hello all. Any memories to share of the police roadblocks at Cleethorpes. Keep on the good foot. Ulyssees
  9. Hello all. Any special memories of Va Va's club or even better, any photos. Yule.
  10. Hi all. I regularly visit the Wheel and find that many people are surprised to discover that allnighters were held there in the late 80's on bank holiday weekends. Anyone have any memories to share regarding these nights. Keep on the good foot. Yule.
  11. Hello all. When did the policy of dropping records from DJ's playlists once the record became generally available through bootlegs or legitimate release start? This policy although leading to some superb sounds not having as long enough life in the clubs as they deserved (unless played as an oldie) it did keep the thirst for unknown sounds alive and therefore keep the scene fresh. STF Ulyssees.
  12. Hi all. Who can lay claim to have first used the phrase "Keep the faith" in regards to the northern scene. Keep......you know the rest! Ulyssees.
  13. Great idea for a thread. My first taste of soul was in '68 (the term Northern wasn't around yet, although I seem to remember the term "Uptown" being used) was at "The Revolution" club in Sutton -in -Ashfield Notts Capacity around 200). The music just hit me from the start and soon after started collecting records. I used to go with mates from (very recent) school days but realised they were more interested in downing pints and I was more into getting down! The club used to have live bands on and can rember seeing Inez & Charlie Foxx there. I was also working with a few people who went to the Mojo, Dungeon, Junction, Wheel etc. but those guys were so cool .....you would never dare to ask for a lift. A few years later one of my best mates was one of these guys and we had a few laughs about it. Records that first hit me where "Lets Go Baby", "Girls are out to get you", "Billy's bag" "Love makes a woman" all very common nowadays but totally unavailable at that time something I realised when trying to buy "Mr Bang bang man" at our local record shop, the asistant put me straight which led to sending for record lists, one of the first I received was from Brian "45" Phillips, sure enough "Bang Bang" was on it....£5 U.K. orig, trouble was my weekly wage was 4 10/- Looking back getting on the scene just seemed a natural thing to do and have always felt that it was a path I was destined to follow. Happy days that led to many happy years. Ulyssees.
  14. Hello all. Can anyone reccomend any R&B CD's? I have both the Northern Soul meets R&B and the Guys' Got Soul one. Happy new year. Ulyssees
  15. I have an old wigan audio tape I recorded in 74, it's announced that "this is the first time Carstairs is being played at the casino". and that it belongs to Frank (Ian Dewhurst) from Leeds, and ...no it is not for sale! This was the same night Dave Godin was there and he took Crow "Autumn of Tomorrow" with him. Ulyssees.
  16. Hi all. I remenber Phil Kingswood turning up at the casino with 7 mint condition copies of Lou Pride, £8 each, I bought one and the rest went to Mansfield lads. Phil got the discs from Soul Bowl that afternoon. Ulyssees.
  17. Hi all. Lots of comments since I posted this, but very few prepared to predict how long the scene will last so I will stick my neck out and give us all at least another 15 yrs. I'm basing this on average age of attendees at soul nights, 48ish? and also looking at the rock 'n' roll scene which predates ours by 7/8 yrs. Mind you I did once think it would all be over once the 70's started! nice to be proved wrong. Do whats right, not whats white. (extra point if you remeber who wrote this.) Ulyssees.
  18. I sometimes enjoyed the beachcomber more than the Casino, It resembled the "bar scene" from Star Wars some mornings. Can't remeber if it was open from the first days of the casino though. Ulyssees
  19. Hi all. Any memories of the Beachcomber cafe next door to the Casino, as I recall it used to be open from 8-10a.m. Think they opened this up to keep all the nighter crowd off the streets and out of the swimming baths. Never seen any photos from in there, anyone help out? Ulyssees
  20. The Beatles covered the following Motwn songs, "Please Mr Postman", "Money", "You Really Got A Hold On Me" on thier first albums (songs regularly performed in Hamburg and the Cavern club) and were allways ardent supporters of the Motown record company even into the mid-sixties, John Lennon played a copy of The Supremes "Stop in the Name of Love to George Martin and Brian Epstein and wanted to know how get the same power into thier recordings that this record had on it's intro.
  21. Hello all. Simple question, How long until the last ever soul night? Over to you..... Ulyssees
  22. What are the best prices obtained for records that have been advertised honestly as bootlegs as opposed to fakes being put up for sale as the original item. A few years ago I sold Edwin Starr "Scotts on Swingers" on red rictic for £157, a record I originally paid £1 for at a record fair about 22 yrs ago. The disc was totally unplayed and was advertised on E-Bay as a boot. I think the B-side was "All Turned On" instr. Ulyssees
  23. Hello all. Does anyone know how many Demo's would have been pressed for an individual title on U.K. labels such as Stateside, London, T.Motown, HMV etc. in the 60's. Ulyssees.
