Why Do We Dislike Al Wilson's The Snake So Much?
ulyssees replied to Dave Bishop FM's topic in All About the SOUL
The lyrics relate to the story of the garden of Eden. The pretty woman is Eve. Dussapointed that this record has fallen out of favour as it is one of the most original sounds lyric wise as most of our music lyrically is pretty much moon and June. Some great Smokey Robinson lyric play notably Two Lovers with a killer last line...superb Yule -
The last 12 years have been brilliant and I miss the place already, so many good times to remember that can never be taken away. I think there may be some confusion regarding my "bootleg" comment, the club I am referring to is the original 1965 Whitworth St venue, surely once a place changes address it ceases to be. Not only was the address changed the music policy evolved as well so much in fact that many Brasenose St regulars gave it a try and said not a patch on the original and gave it a miss. So are we witnessing the birth if Wheel 3? Why not? If it was O. K. In 65 then it works for me in 2013, hey the music is everything right so let's raise a glass to the new club, well done Pete and thanks for giving me and countless others some of the best times of my life.

Revolution Club Sutton-In -Ashfield/mansfield/notts

Good to see this thread popping up again. Walked by the old place recently and has now re-opened as commercial premises and called....Revolution! Coincidence or someone in the know. I seem to remember Petal running a pirate soul station from his spare room mostly playing Geoff King bootlegs. Good to see Sutton baths getting a mention, the pool was emptied and boarded over for dance nights featuring such people as The Equals, Amen Corner, BB King, Garnet Mimms not strictly a soul night but music was more soul than pop. A typical week in Sutton then would have been,Sunday Revolution, Monday, Oval Tuesday Potmakers, Wednesday Revolution, Thursday New Cross, Friday Revolution. Satyrday night would have been a trip down into Mansfield to the Colours ( Bell Vue pub) and then the Swan which Rob Marriott used many years later as an all nighter venue. All the above venues were above or the back room if a pub but the Rev was strictly club only and only used in above mentioned nights. Would still love to see some pics from in there. Yule. -

Some mornings those couple of hours in the Beachcomber where better than the nighter (every night wasn't brilliant). Seem to remember John Vincent D.J'ing in there, toilets were very dark (not easy to crank up) but the edgy atmosphere got the buzz going. Someone compared it to the bar scene in Star Wars, thats about right.

Northern Soul - The Film - Latest news - March 2012
ulyssees commented on Mike's article in News Archives
Should have at least one scene inside a car full of soulies on thier way to a nighter talking non-stop bollocks. -
Sad news on the future of the Wheel, lots of activity on this site regarding saving this most famous cellar. The buildingg on the corner shows Monroes pub which is exempt from planning, the Wheel site is to become a 330 room hotel. twistedwheel.net

50 Key Landmark Moments In Northern Soul History
ulyssees replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
Roger Eagle hired by Adabi brothers to DJ at the original Twisted Wheel. Dave Godin reviews "up north" records in B&S Northern music made available on CD -
Just a thought but there seems to be a long running connection between the Northern scene and the gay fraternity, I am thinking of quite a few important people along the years who have been instrumental in shaping our scene. It also seems to be quite ironic that the best and most famous club of all is situated in a gay club in the heart of Manchesters gay village. Any thoughts on this, over to you. Yule.

Hi I remember those two guys in the masks, they were a couple of dudes from Ilkeston (Notts) "Flabs and Mick. Gave me a good tingle up the spine too. Strangely enough I also encountered them outside Mr M's. Yule

Hi Dean Parrish was played as the last Wigan record from the 3rd 'nighter onwards, used to know what the last ones were before that but have forgotten. I seem to remember Jimmy Radcliff added soon after that, (as a tribute to the Wheel I always assumed as that was thier last sound) and then a few months later Tobi Legend. Yule

I have lifted this from The Twisted Wheel site. This by Keith Rylatt. While researching for CENtral 1179 I came across a guy called Ken White. Ken had been a guitarist in Jimmy Powell & the Five Dimensions (page 60 in the book). He had been bought a Super 8 cine camera for his 18th birthday and Ken commenced filming at the gigs he played in the mid 60s. Intrigued, I made the long trip to his place on Bodmin Moor and was treated to feast of footage from clubs in Liverpool to the Starlight in Hull. And of course, the Wheel in Manchester and Blackpool. All in colour too! I loaned my copy of the Wheel stuff to a TV production company in London and never got it back. There are however various stills from it in the book. Ken knows exactly what he is sitting on but ten years on, I've no idea if he plans to do anything commercially. www.twistedwheel.net.

Hi There are 2 LP live recordings from this tour issued on the U.K. blue Stax label 589010. I have one and have spent 40+ yrs trying to get the other. Artists featured on my album are Carla Thomas, B-A-B-Y ,Yesterday. Sam & Dave, Hold on I'm coming, I take what I want, Soothe me, When something is wrong with my baby. Booker T & MG's, Green onions (extended version), Red beans & rice, Gimme some lovin' The other album Vol 2 features Otis Redding Eddie Floyd Markeys. I also have the Otis in europe LP which contains live performance from various european venues from this tour. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the D.J. Emperor Rosko compered the show at the Finsbury Park. Had the pleasure of seeing Sam & Dave perform around 1970 and they were amazing, best soul outfit I have ever seen.

Hi all. You know how it is, you tell someone you're into Northern Soul and they say.....whats that? And 2 minutes later you find yourself looking at the totally bemused expression of the person who asked. So in 10 words or less.....What is Northern Soul? Over to you. Yule.

Hi all. Anyone see the old Coronation Street clip (shown as part of the show's 50 yr anniversary) of Ken Barlowe getting a bollocking from his dad for staying out all night at a "drug den" in the city? Could it have been the Brazenose St Wheel 63-65? Yule.
