  1. Bought a red label boot for a pound, advertised it as such and sold it on eBay for over £150.
  2. Many thanks all.
  3. Many thanks for the replies, I have read the Twisted Wheel book and also attended the Placemate nights, but I am especially interested in the R&B scene of today and the music played in such clubs as the Adlib in Lincoln, King Bee in Sheffield and the Pow Wow Hull. Yule.
  4. Could someone give me a potted history of the R&B scene, are new records being discovered? Where did it come from, who would be regarded as the true innovators. Many thanks.
  5. The Lantern all nighters at Market Harborough ran around 1970.
  6. Anyone remember the mid 60's episode of Corrie when Ken Barlow went to a 'nighter?
  7. Pow Wow. I am defining pop by meaning non soul, blues, jazz, funk etc. All those weird and wonderful discs that are part of the northern scene and make it unique, and which non northern folks can't fathom. For example, my wife, a non soulie is totally confused by hearing something like "Nothing But Love" John Rhys played at a soul night.
  8. Condition Red, 96 Tears, Hey Sah Lo Ney
  9. What is the best pop record ever played at a nighter? Keep it real. Yule.
  10. The first Beatles album features cover versions of Motown songs, Please Mr Postman, You really got a hold on me, Money. Twist and Shout was a favourite live song when they were in Hamburg. John Lennon once took a copy of Stop in the name of love to Brian Epstein played him the intro and asked "why don't we don't sound that good". They also specifically asked for Mary Wells to support them on an early UK tour. Those boys had taste! All recorded Motown songs had already had UK release.
  11. is it O.K. for DJ's to play reissues on vinyl?
  12. Is it O.K. To play reissues if on vinyl?
  13. A lot of old soulies don't like to be associated with the term Northern Soul, so how about a new name for all the music that came before 1971, here is my suggestion Cellar Soul, any takers?
  14. My first day at work in 1968 I was teamed up with this guy, within 20 minutes he had told me about this club he used to go to, The Twisted Wheel. Six months later he was off the scene, not me. Many thanks Mick
  15. Was played at the Wheel and everywhere else at that time.
  16. I know for a fact there are some fake bell sound acetates in circulation that were manufactured years ago and have changed hands several times for big money. yule.
  17. British releases fascinate me because I wonder how an obscure USA record managed to find its way to Britain. The labels are dull compared to thier USA counterparts they reek of terrace houses, grimy factories and people who were prepared to disregard the pulp of the hit parade and blaze a trail for artists outside of common knowledge, which when you, think about it, is what we all do without even thinking about.
  18. Who has bought it?
  19. Overrated as in, was once loved but then became known by a wider public because of its high value and attained some sort of novelty value. Exactly what happened with Frank Wilson, it's really a case of not being able to see the wood for the trees. yule.
  20. If things follow as before a superb double header is about to be relegated to the ranks of " overrated" because of its celebrity status bought about by value. I am talking about the London issue of Darell Banks. Please don't let it happen, this is one of the cornerstones of our music, but, be aware it will be under threat. Yule.
  21. If the Main room was your benevolent uncle, Mr M's was the nutcase cousin locked up in the attic. K.I.R.
  22. At one minute fifty five seconds is Blowing My Mind To Pieces northern soul's shortest song? Yule.
  23. Are you happy to be known as a northern souler? K.O.K.O.
