  1. Your a bloody dark horse Mr Rix, and you are bloody good at what you do. Well done mate Gilly and Nicola
  2. As someone said of me and the name dropping I do from time to time here goes again. I was just packing my flight case sat on Popcorn Wylie's family room floor having been his guest for several days when in walked a guy almost without knocking, it took me back a bit (not something you would do in the US ) I soon realised it was either family or very close friend, anyway this guy and Richard were asking of each others family well beings, I sat and said nothing until Popcorn said "say hello to Gilly, hes from the UK" I said hi to this guy and followed it up with " suppose you were in a group too one time " he came back to me instantly saying " yes I was in the Superlatives " good job I was already sat down, he was Popcorns cousin. Not related to the original post but connected to the group in question
  3. Think my friend Kev Cane (on here) is/was selling one
  4. A lady named Nancy had two early G Toons 45s think shes on here
  5. The one with the chicken wire at the front of the stage to detur bottle throwing
  6. Cant help you with a 45 alas I sold it but are you aware of his song " So Glad Trouble Don't Last" on Simco
  7. Hammie, I was lucky to have one of only about 4 copies before Nev Wheary found a bulk amount in the states all I can say about it is the print (type) was a different size don't remember which way round it was but I think mine had the smaller type from memory and to answer your question ive never seen a demo either.
  8. Apart from the start of Wigan and in a few years Wigan had a very sparse attendance on a lot of Saturday nights and the Saturday after the monthly oldies almost empty with just a few hardcore punters and I could name most of the record bar lads
  9. Not too far away with that Kev, ive said for a long time a lot of these retro punters (who are never on these forums so you cant have a row with them) only know maybe 10 songs and that's all they want to know, so its easy music plenty of drink and a quick walk (side-ways) home. You can then tell all your workmates your a northern soulie right on
  10. A few years back everyone wanted to DJ now everyone wants to promote as well, one sure way of getting on the mic
  11. This is out of order mate, was it people off the street or one of our kind (I do hope not) hope you get them back
  12. Yes this is sad news, Met George along side Guy and Chris K in 1985 went to a party where he was at. Had a chat with him and he was very nice bloke, wish I had known more about him back then. As for his skills well what can you say, for anyone who isn't so clued up check out the drumming in E Starr's Your my mellow or any version of Hit and run. you'll know where he's at Bless you George and thanks
  13. Somewhere I have Ollie Mc.. own autographed Caravan Membership card, an LP cover Atac 331 Sir George $1,000 You've Got Me In A Whirlpool that lists 8 other songs never pressed up and autographed, An original bag used for TV to hold and promote popcorn, With the words "Every body loves Popcorn" printed on it, you can guess who gave me that and at the same time a Larry Wright Ago go 45 and a Lost Time 45 taken from the album (don't have the 45s anymore) Some Groovesville record returns notes marked F A O Don Davis, Managed to get many years ago Edwin Starr to autograph his Ric Tic 45s under his birth name (he wasn't too happy about doing it but JJ Barnes and Steve Mancha helped me out on that), Also S Mancha under his real name on his 45s J M Mathews wrote some nice words on her I Have No Choice 45 that her son Chuck gave me That's on film video taken at the time and of course loads of artists autographs in my book as most people have, most of them no longer with us
  14. No Dave afraid no photo, didn't have a camera with me on that trip, I know I kick myself.
  15. Further to my earlier post let me add a little more that gives my theory a bit more substance, iwas lucky to of visited Duke in 1987 I say lucky because many a person had spoken to him on the phone and he wasn't very receptive and had no interest in music of past, I only got round on Broad St because I was stopping over at Richard Wylie's house on Sorrento for 8 days. Now I know that people in the music business would hand out their latest release (45) to each other in passing Popcorn had told me that many times but one of the 3/4 records I got from Duke was a Sequins Try My Love. Didn't think much about it at the time (I was so chuffed with this 45) I also got the only promo photo of the girls that I know of from Dave Hamilton who had said to me The Sequins were a better group than the Supremes at that time. On return to the UK sometime later I looked at a picture of The Lollipops and thought they looked like the girls in my picture of The Sequins So this gave thoughts to my theory and may I say might explain why Duke had this recording. Hope this can be proved or not proved as long as the facts are documented
  16. Some on here will know about my thoughts for those who don't this is it The three girls who made up The Detroit Sequins after Try my love added a member and were then managed by Duke Browner and renamed The Lollipops
  17. Just thinking (I do that now and again) the other side of both our points can be that a great song that we would all love can be watered down a change of singer and bang its become a well known song or even a hit. Now that does piss me off.
  18. I'll go with that Kev, it might also be the reason that a larger % of what I prefer would be male group harmony songs. Gilly
  19. Have to agree with Macca, I know this wont go down with a lot of people but ive never been a big fan of Linda Jones (tin helmet on ) for the very same reason, I don't deny she was good but not always for me
  20. Well they keep going up, got one from a collector in Detroit about $3/5 think it sold for about £40/60 1997
  21. Let me just say this, if you wanted a record out quick (and they did everyone was racing) you had to get your money back asap because of your outlay ie studio time, musicians, 2" master tape very expensive and then the pressing plant costs + artwork if when you approached the plant asked for say green paper and they hadn't got any you wont hang around use whatever colour you have. This can apply at the beginning of a run and if sales from that first run looked busy you go for repress to keep it hot you would take any colour they had. Its as simple as that in some cases.
  22. Does anyone agree with me but "ive found someone" the vocal sounds so much like a Jackie Wilson type feel. Have a listen do you agree or not
  23. Too much bottom end don't help nothing brill record tho
  24. The song still sounds utterly brilliant, its Betty Wrights brother too
  25. Fantastic article as for the group well I have and will have a row with anyone this group were better than the Temps despite all the facilities that were laid on at Motown I think the Masqueraders vocals are tighter than most groups of that time
