  1. that Dynamite Soul label is a boot from a couple of years ago btw
  2. i presumed it was that urban myth that Bicks was alluding to? now a true fact about Holness is that he was the second actor to play James Bond (in a '56 radio version)
  3. the David Ruffin version is up there, twice. although both have the title misspelt ("your still...")
  4. best version is the unreleased David Ruffin one IMO
  5. Lowdown is a great record - the LP is in most UK charity shops, and it's on 45 too... just listened to the other track and that's really awful... - the vocals are actually from the excellent Gravediggaz 1st LP not the Wu Tang Clan (although the groups shared a common member), but that's a really terrible remix/mashup/whatever
  6. don't have a soundfile i'm afraid - it's from 1960, rock'n'roll with a ska-style off-beat
  7. there's a joke there about not being enough room on the label! although of course really it's an earlier label design
  8. it's a cover version of Eugene Church 'Good News' btw
  9. same as with 45s - if you can bend the package it's not packed well enough. i still write 'Fragile - please do not bend' on them though. and remember that corrugated card is only stiff in one direction. a lot of sellers use multiple sheets, but all with the lines in the same direction. postage is about 2.00 - 2.50 within the UK depending on weight of LP and stiffeners - for example US sleeves weigh more than UK ones
  10. come on, name and shame, so that others can avoid or at least tell them to use better packaging if they buy from them (or were the records a bargain? )
  11. more info: https://www.designboom.com/history/nipper.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/His_Master%27s_Voice it wasn't painted initially as a logo, HMV took it's name from the painting's title.
  12. Motown supposedly were going to sign The Fall at one point! presumably it was for one of the sub labels they'd started, think there was a rock one
  13. no, he moved to Germany, and then later died there.
  14. also some releases on the label are non-Motown material, like the Al Green reissues.
  15. "You kind love is a precious gift / Wrapped up in quality" ??? appalling! Ray Scott and the Scottsmen - Right Now
  16. there are 2 issues of this, with different flips: https://www.45cat.com/artist/marsha-hunts-22 (edit, and just noticed that neither has the number 109...?) had copies of both at one point, the version of 'Somebody To Love' (Jefferson Airplane) is pretty good if i remember. don't recall 'Bop City' at all
  17. possibly the best Mickey and Sylvia record: ">
  18. i've already posted the text from the original 1895 newspaper article about the killing in the thread. the Clash covered 'Wrong Emboyo' by The Rulers, which starts off with a bit of Stag-o-lee before going into the song itself
  19. is there a surviving photo of Lee Shelton (Stagger Lee)? here's the newspaper article: The St. Louis Globe Democrat, 1895 William Lyons, 25, colored, a levee hand, living at 1410 Morgan Street, was shot in the abdomen yesterday evening at 10 o clock in the saloon of Bill Curtis, at Eleventh and Morgan Streets, by Lee Sheldon [sic], also colored. Both parties, it seems, had been drinking and were feeling in exuberant spirits. Lyons and Sheldon were friends and were talking together. The discussion drifted to politics and an argument was started, the conclusion of which was that Lyons snatched Sheldon s hat from his head. The latter indignantly demanded its return. Lyons refused, and Sheldon withdrew his revolver and shot Lyons in the abdomen. Lyons was taken to the Dispensary, where his wounds were pronounced serious. He was removed to the City Hospital. At the time of the shooting the saloon was crowded with negroes. Sheldon is a carriage driver and lives at 911 North Twelfth Street. When his victim fell to the floor Sheldon took his hat from the hand of the wounded man and coolly walked away. He was subsequently arrested and locked up at the Chestnut Street Station. Sheldon is also known as Stag Lee. another American folk character in many songs is John Henry...
  20. is this the same Gamma? (from 1968) GAMMA 104 - Smokey Smothers - I've Got My Eyes On You (Watching Everything You Do) / inst GAMMA 104 - Smokey Smothers - I've Got My Eyes On You (Watching Everything You Do) / I'm Looking For You
  21. been a while since i played that CD, but don't think that this remix is on it - it's just a simpler re-edit of the original on that if i remember. great set anyway,..
  22. no idea where he got stuffed pressed, but label was run by Herb Abramson (previously at Atlantic) who was based on the East Coast (NY or DC)
