  1. oops, so have i! only on LP though, so that's my excuse for not remembering...
  2. not 100% sure, but maybe The Three Tops - The Sound of Music? Duke Reid production
  3. was one sitting on JM's site for ages and ages last year, think it was at 25 quid. i reckoned i could find it cheaper, but never did. think it's ok, quite an interesting sound
  4. they've made the face more modern looking, and so it's no longer a 'cameo' style picture, the fools!
  5. that kind of implies it's well known then if he plays it! here's their other releases: https://www.pattofan.com/Timebox/tb_singles.htm am trying to find an article or interview i read about them, as usual they were messed about by UK record companies, hence the release of novelty stuff like 'Baked Jam Roll In Your Eye'...
  6. am very surprised that there's anyone into 60s music that hasn't heard it! booted several times, and on loads of compilations. one of the very best UK soul records IMO, incredible track even though i've heard it far too often
  7. i've got over 100 (i think, not counted yet) of the US cruciform style 45 mailers (with stiffeners) available to anyone in London who wants them. have got rid of the ones that had already been used twice, so all these are used only once, and so just need re-sealing the other way around. the UK style envelopes are harder to reuse, have to cover up the address with paper first...
  8. blimey, that was unexpected, cheers!
  9. think Mickey Newbury recorded it himself, and there's a version on a later Kenny Rogers record (which isn't as good). the Sharon Jones version on a Daptone 45 is very good too, pretty similar to the Betty Lavette, i think i slightly prefer it. but the Kenny Rogers and First Edition is still the best...
  10. also it's much harder to get records pressed now with a push-out centre, or with the non-slip ridges around the label. although someone might have just managed it, since there have been a few bootleg Beatles demos up recently on Ebay. obviously instantly identifiable from the modern printing and fonts, but people have still been getting three figure sums for them. either that, or they've stuck demo labels on issue copies. e.g. https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RARE-BEATLES-LADY-MA...1QQcmdZViewItem
  11. ah, in that case it could be the laptop. to save costs many laptop soundcards only have one input which can then be set to either microphone level or line level (you need the latter). see if you're able to switch it somewhere, what are you using, Windows?
  12. did you put the turntable output directly into the soundcard? phono outputs aren't Line level (or even flat EQed) they need to go through an amp/mixer first. that would cause it to be very quiet and have no bass...
  13. there's a pt 2 on the 45, is that mostly instrumental, i've not played it for years? (anyone want it?)
  14. remember to put a low value on the customs form, high values will increase the chance of it going 'missing'...
  15. there's definitely an RCA reissue with the title as 'Moonlight Music In You', might be the grey one. saw it yesterday but was a bit dark to see the label colour... didn't look orange anyway
  16. it's actually a drawing of him. had the LP for months (years?) before i noticed...
  17. ought to point out that it's a bit off-centre, but easy enough to line-up and draw where the middle should go onto the label, and then it's fine to DJ with. cracking tune, well worth a fiver!
  18. Marlene and the Debanettes - Bad Love / Play Something Slow (Sunburst) - VG 10 - rare girl group two-sider, plays ok
  19. well, Benny Gordon's drummer managed it... and it's nothing to do with judging records as breakbeats, when he says 'Tighten up on the drums!' you're expecting something decent to happen, same as any of those 'formula' records, like Memphis Soul Stew, etc. don't think i like any of the TSU Toronadoes stuff i've heard, come to think of it...
  20. this is my favourite, Bamboos is good too, if heavy. the 'tighten up on the drums' bit on the original is rubbish, it cries out for a nice fat breakbeat there
  21. just think of them like the 'white labels' in dance music. many house/jungle/whatever tracks never made it past white label - pressed up as promos, no royalties etc (not that Jamaican stuff had percentage contracts), but sold via shops. loads of big hits also seem to almost always be on blank - 'Carry Go Bring Come' for example, which sold thousands and thousands - presume that they didn't bother with a label for quick sellers and not to be confused with stuff that's had the label scrubbed off to hide the title and artist
  22. not sure record collecting ever counts as 'the real world' a non-DJ friend found this (without knowing it) in the summer for 50c. that's a 'real world' price! would reckon 250-300 quid in the strange world of records..?
  23. my copy was from a pound box, don't think it's worth much (20 quid?). wouldn't consider it Northern Soul. see it's been comped on 45 Kings vol 3, along with Gary Atkinson 'Wanderin' Soul', Nino Ferrer, etc. there's a fair bit of this 'folk funk' soul/blues influenced stuff about, wouldn't categorise it as soul itself though. a few others off the top of my head: Christine Perfect - And That's Saying a Lot Carmen Cole - I Just Don't Understand Lyn Christopher - Take Me With You Barbara and Ernie - Play With Fire Nancy Priddy Bonnie Dobson Dion 'Daddy Rollin' late period Bobby Darin Ellen McIlwaine loads more...
  24. the other Little Willie John on myspace has more friends! (2000+) 'My Love Is' is one of my favourites that i rarely see mentioned
  25. MH's audience isn't youngsters though, who might then go on to dig deeper, but people who'll be 35, 40, 45, whatever and have had years of at least some exposure to 'proper' soul music and not chosen to investigate further, so i don't see why this would be any different, other than the bit of exposure of getting Bobby Bland's name in the media for a while. although the 45s spun at NS nights are obscure, every CD shop has sections for 60s soul, Motown comps, etc, they've had plenty of chance to dig deeper if they actually were interested
