As we are in lockdown I’ve joined Caerphilly angling club, and now I can fish Caerphilly castle moat,  but my god is it weedy!

Stunning place to fish, can’t think of too many backdrops like this one... I’m in there by the way, freezing my nuts off... lol

You'll find gratinated leeks a very good bait there. Dx

Definitely no chicks Dave,  they eat maybe 4 goldfinch,  sparrows a day and it will be a male Sparrowhawk with it only taking small birds. The female will take woodpidgeon,  magpie, grey squirrel etc.

Must admit it had an (unsuccessful) go at one of the Collared Doves that live on the patio yesterday.

It was a lovely surprise, hope it comes back again 🤞

If you see it again DON'T give it bread and milk as people traditionally did - milk is really bad for them. Tinned Cat/Dog food is best.

Graham.  I've been lucky enough to see the Sparrowhawk ( male ) on the garden fence a few times and even managed to get a few pictures. Never seen them make a kill but now and again there's evidence on the grass of a successful hunt.

Definitely agree with you on the no young to feed this time of year bit mate.  I've posted a link for Dave which has some interesting stuff

It came back for a FIFTH bird - MUST be feeding chicks (to give you idea how late things are here I saw a Willow Warbler on the patio Tuesday!) ...Or there's a whole flock of the hairy little buggers hiding in the trees... You simply couldn't stuff that much Goldfinch into a single Sparrowhawk. Dx

Just hope the seeds on the flowers mature so the birds can eat them off the plant when it does die back 🤞

Just seen our sparrowhawk take it's FORTH goldfinch of the day from our feeders (which are caged so there's always a tug of war getting its prey through the bars) - it had three yesterday that I saw. I reckon it's either:

A] Gonna be fat as a pig shortly, or

    B] More than one, or

    C] Got kids to feed

  5. I think for all of us our best years were when we were 18-25 (though for me probably also 30-40 thanks to Pete - though that was a mad time) when we were starry eyed and full of youthful energy... It doesn't matter what period that covers; Wheel, Mecca and Torch, Mecca, Early Wigan, Late Wigan and Stafford, Morecambe, The 100 Club, Bradford Queens Hall; whatever, you'll have had your best days at that age - regardless of which clubs you were old enough to attend. Hi Tension played a concert there. It was before I went - 78 or 79 ish.  It was advertised in Radio Times in the   "In Concert (or whatever)" programme around 10 pm on Radio 1 on Saturday night. The reason I remember is because I was going out and I  asked my sister to record it for me and she forgot.  I'm sure it was advertised as "Live at Wigan Casino" but it was almost certainly pre-recorded (ie a recorded live performance).

Don't forget that the Casino was a live venue in itself - The Stranglers played there a couple of times.

  7. Pete would've had a few things to say about this!

'Motown' never existed in Britain, TMG never recorded in Britain (unless there's some live stuff somewhere) - so there's no legitimacy to this at all - whilst it's nice to see the name alive, it's just a cynical cash in.

...A few years ago TMG was literally a phone on a desk with nobody even officially responsible for it... Until that 'evil' Mr King ruined everything for them by delivering an explosion in interest for all the unissued stuff they didn't even know they had.

Nice one 👍. Got good weather forecast for the rest of the week Dave

Unfortunately - I'm just about emotionally ready to have a day salmon fishing but there's no water in the South Tyne - plus I've got a painter coming IF it rains. Dx

I got on a minter off big Tim, around 88, at Blackburn. £20

Mine was at Peterborough in about 85 - got a yellow Superlatives (very clean except for a patch of label damage from some idiot - not me! - trying to peel off a sticker without lighter fluid) more or less the same time for a fiver too.

High Lorton - the cream house (Corner House) right on the corner of Tenter's Lane (the road up the hill towards Whinlatter that's now closed to cars). Dx

  11. The down points...

The Wheel memorabilia/pics are a bit thin on the ground and not very good quality as is the layout (should have got a proper designer - like me - to do it).

At the tail end it when it talks post-Wheel it completely misses out and is clearly not aware of Brian Rae's (for a time) massively successful Twisted Wheel revivals which ran on bank holidays for several years - saying that Pete Robert's events were the first soul dos run at the club for 29 years.

In fact, there were also some Placemate Allinighters in the very early 80s run by someones else, plus there were a few soul alldayers run there immediately after the Wheel closed and became Placemate 7 - I have Pete's Placemate 7 membership - I believe these were some of the first soul events that RS went to.

It would have benefitted from some more input/comments from Wheel regulars.

The bit on Les was pretty cursory too - specially given the fact he played the very last record, it also fails to make the point that ironically he DJed at Legends itself (as well as Heroes) in the 80s.

    HOWEVER...

I have to say that what there is in there copy-wise is extremely well written and authoritative (only got it yesterday and have already finished it) - so overall I would HIGHLY recommend it, especially for the paltry £15 price tag.

Rob McCeever - if you ever want to redo it 'properly' give me a shout and we'll work something out.

PS Would have put this in the new topic but I couldn't find it!
