  1. Had my newly purchased mint George Smith crack from heat shock taking it out for 'safe keeping' to the Crewe minibus in about -5C from Shotts in full steam.

Les Cokell stood on my Luther Ingram at his flat when he was ill - cracked right across one side, but still plays cleanly.

  2. Memberships can be of use as a vehicle for keeping out pissheads/trouble - ie 'sorry strict policy you can't come in without one' to anyone you don't like the look of.

Be a little wary of getting too 'something for everyone' as you'll end up inundated with people wanting to hear Babylove etc if you're not careful which will tend to drive away those with a more serious passion for the music.

Where in SW Scotland - we're in Carlisle. Keep the venue small (at least initially) as a packed small venue is much, much better than a half empty medium-large venue and of course the overheads are less precarious, attached parking is also very useful as people get nervous leaving their cars late in the evening somewhere they don't know.

    Best of luck.

  3. Save yourselves, save yourselves - it'll put you off Northern for life!

The best bit is when the girl overdoses on one black and white - a pill that is SO ridiculously huge I reckon she actually choked on it.

I'm afraid a lot of it makes us look ridiculous - specially the Saturday Night Fever meets Jackie Chan 'dance off' with the evil drug dealer (who even has a Dick Dastardly moustache - though I can talk on that one!).

  4. Hi Dale, yeh remember that one light blue vespa with couloured bubbles. Wasn`t on the scooter scene that long myself maybe only a couple of years but had some great times, great memories of Billy whizz r.i.p. Good days indeed

Carl from Hull had that light blue vespa by 83, always loved Lil' Deuce Scoot - remember it was on the cover of one of the original Scootermanias - Hull was still full of some superb AFs when I was there at college 83-86 - Ace of Clubs and Masterblaster being my favourites (back then I always went to nighters on a scooter - unfortunately being skint so I could only afford one a month it was almost always just Peterborough along with Martin Midgley from Bradford and Striker) - I was in the Drifters for a short while before it finally broke up and went down to the mini rallies in the Castle Car Park in York - but was always, and always will be an Oxford Roadrunner at heart.

  5. Surely it's GOTTA be the Dixie Cups - Chapel of Love.

For me though - Gladys doing He's My Kinda Fella, the Originals Baby I'm For Real or Bobby Taylor Does your mamma know about me - all intensely personal.

  6. Well he is isn't he?

Probably missing the boat here, but apparently Sky Saxon (nutty lead singer of the Seeds - Pushin Too Hard etc) toured the Southern States doing the white RnB thing calling himself 'Little Richie' in the mid 60s (according to the California Dreaming book - which I sadly got knicked/willfully unreturned) - no definitive link of course.

Dusty Springfield - Live It Up - now THERE'S a great underplayed white track!

From what I remember of seeing pictures of them the Velours were hispanic rather than white - didn't they tour Britain as the Fantastics?

Doesn't get any better than Stronger Than Me - always had a major soft spot for Evie Sands too.

PS Bricks Broken Bottle and Sticks - total load of crap - there were SIX white demos at £1.50 each in a record shop round the corner from Sid Scarborough's in in Hull in the mid 80s (I guess about 85 - I left Hull Art College in 86) - anyway we all knew they were there and thought it SUCH garbage that they couldn't sell any of them - however wish I knew then what I know now about records coz the numerous second hand record shops in Hull (about 10) were stuffed with some great US 70s soul - plus of course Paul Madden in the covered market still had a lot of his really good stuff.

  7. What a silly thread - there are half a dozen I can think of straight away that I went to, you'll just never get a full list given all the one offs etc.

There's the White Heather at Wigton that me and Pete used to co-run with Dave and Danny and later Saus in the late 90s, that was resurrected recently for a bit. Pip used to put on new year allnighters in Carlisle. There was that one that Rob Marriot ran for a short while about 92 around Kettering somewhere. Ion's allnighter in London at LaScala and that club opposite the Sun offices. The Dolphin club or whatever it was called in Southampton. The RnB nighters Brian used to do at various venues round central Manchester (I DJed at em all but can't remember the venues). Dunstable. The modern allnighter at the Polish club in Bedford in the late 80s. Hyde Botanical club. Don't think I've even seen mention of Mansfield White Hart, Shotts, Loughbrough, KGBs, Trentham, Longton, the Florence Club, The Golden Hynde or even Queen's Hall Bradford.

  8. The actual story which Frank told us (first night he was over outside Jazz FM as it happens before RS recorded his inteview pre-Blackpool) was that he was with Berry behind the curtains watching the Supremes on stage in LA at the tail end of a string of dates just after cutting "Do I love You".

They were absolutely shattered and having real problems - Berry looks a Frank, puts his arm around his shoulder and says words to the effect of "look at them - do you really want ALL this hard work and hassle just to get a few record sales, you're just not cut out for performing are you mate".

Frank mumbled a half convinced "spose you're right BG" acceptance - a couple of days later he walks into the office to find Berry has wiped the record from the face of the earth having called in directly he left Frank.

This is why FW never had one himself - though the thing about offering Kenny $50k for his is true, it was because his daughter wanted a copy - he being too much of a perfectionist thought it a very weak performance.

Apparently there are a good number of FW recordings under various pseudonyms - the Eddie Wilson obviously, but also several more for labels he couldn't remember under various other names he also couldn't remember.

As I understood it he was never actually a staffer at Motown - except early on when he was managing the original tiny Motown office in LA.

  9. Not that I'm promoting nowadays so it's not really my shout - but personally I'd be more than happy (on the maddingly rare occasions I get the time to go out) to pay a premium on door charges to finance a Soul Fans/Students under 25 half price concession.

I remember it used be the norm to take collections to pay skint youngsters' entry into the Fleet in the early 80s when I first started going regularly.
