At its best Northern is a perfect storm of soulfulness, danceability, stunning performance, backing and production - that 'true' northern ideal is a very rare thing IMO. What's played at ALLNIGHTERS though varies wildly around that ideal; from pop sh*te to jump blues garbage, through excessively poppy motown, disco and garage psyche to inappropriately slow tempo deep-ish soul stuff - a broad church of secondary shades of the true god ; )

Yes - as we used to tell one lad all the time - if you can't afford to pay for the big rarities and current in-demanders you need to make your own niche playing less obvious (and less costly) sounds otherwise you're just another soundalike also-ran (and there are FAR too many of them already)... And at the end of the day the DJs that are really respected by those who are not simply nostalgia zombies are those who have a musical personality and spin sounds that mark them out as different.

I think 'wannabe DJ' is a tag largely used by people who've been trudging round the scene for years without actually breaking through in a big way themselves (usually because they aren't actually very good DJs themselves) and by those with a great deal of money who think their cheque book defines their talent as a DJ trying to deride people they look down on basically coz they're not rich...
REAL DJing is about reading and answering the floor, understanding how to structure a spot properly, saying 'you like that one you know? NOW listen to this one that's even better that you don't'...
It SHOULDN'T be a pissing contest over hackneyed crap that's impressive simply because it's expensive - frankly there are numerous records that nobody would give a second hearing to if they weren't four figure sounds.

At 53 just pup but - Morecambe Pier, Bradford (bouncy bouncy dance floor), Brian's Wheel Revivals at their best and Leighton Buzzard... Plus Lifeline when we made it there (massive respect on that one).
Also used to love Carlisle when we co-ran it at the White Heather (93-94) - with people often travelling up from London and down from Dundee - it was great to be booking DJs we really rated (Dickie Watt, Carl, Spenna, the Scots lads etc) plus doing the first spot (which was usually about 3 hours from 8 o'clock - allowing me to do a properly structured spot ranging everything from early Wheel to Curtis and Bileo)... Plus Saus was at his best there. We usually lost money but it was worth it and we usually then treked down to Donnie to stop with W&S until Monday... Remember divvying up the fast stuff amongst us to ensure everyone there was fully fried towards the end of most nights.

Thanks for posting the flyer I had a look for mine but couldn't find it. I remembered it looking a bit scrappy with the Andrea Henry label on the side (first time I heard it was there and loved it). I didn't realise that was the first one. It was a brilliant night, packed, people were even dancing on the stage. I must do a re-edit and put the flyer in.
Dancing on stage - definition of a dick.

Could only find a print out of the flyer for Number 3 (one of mine - probably got the others on disc at work), but also found an ad for the 'Return of the Ultra Rare Night' from a Spring 1996 Manifesto (even though it says 1995(!) on the ad - the date is correct for Easter Sunday 1996) - which would place number one in 1995.

Yes - there hangs a tale for another time. As it happens I did the artwork for the new labels and the CD and LP.
