Chosen few got a lot of plays about 10 year ago in small nights, and but never quite made into the big rooms
Got a fair amount of plays at Bradford courtesy of Pat Brady.

This was played early on at the Wheel and on the mod scene I'm told.

I know that Brenda (and Patrice) had a deal where she paid for her own studio and production time (in exchange for a better royalty deal for the stuff that WAS released) - so getting her in the studio excessively meant that Motown were owed lots of money, making their books look great to the bank at a time when the company was actually skint (in fact she still technically owes them about $50k - though nevertheless they've always been very good at paying her royalties).
It strikes me too that much of the unreleased stuff sounds quite 'independent' Detroit compared to the bulk of their releases at a time when BG was driving hard to consolidate 'the motown sound' as something different and identifiable.

Remember RS playing Bobby Womack's Gypsy Woman and announcing it wasn't due for release in the states for three weeks. Fabulous allnighter.

We did Shotts from Swindon in deep snow most of the way on a SECOND night once (about 750 miles) - forget where we went on the Friday.
Me and Pete co-ran the White Heather on a Friday, down to Donny at Saus and Wendy's all Saturday and then the 100 Club, back to Donny - home Monday lunchtime (about 700 miles).
Did Morecambe allnighter from Oxford on a scooter (450 miles), and on another weekend Lowestoft Allnighter, Chelmsford Alldayer and the 100 Club on a scooter (350 miles).
Always did Peterborough Fleet on a scooter from Hull when I was at college (220 miles).

sad to see probably the rarest items on the list, the mags, go for so little, a real piece of British soul history.
We have quite a number of these - and some very early Blues & Souls that Les Cockell left us.

Er... I haven't seen our lady of the Springfields.
Or indeed Bobby Paris.

Gene Woodbury - cleaner sound. Dx

Given it was written after Marc Bolan died this is crushingly sad.

Sorry folks, frankly it would be rudeness not to mention both sides of one of Margie Joseph's. Volt 45's....
putting never can it be first, as it has the edge, both sublime but then you know that :-)
A good rule of thumb is that it's impossible to own too many Margie Joseph records....

Fairly obvious - but it's got to be Clyde McPhatter - Please Give Me One More Chance...

Tony & Tyrone - Please Operator - Les Cokell used to have it on his answerphone.

Arguable how 'Northern' it is but love Deep Sensation 'Somehow, Somewhere (there's a soul heaven)' - plus it uses a great sample (Southshore Connection 'We're On the Right Track')

RS once told me he thought the most perfect Wigan sound was the Casualeers.

Dave ran the school blues club and even though a few years older than Jagger - DG continued to operate the club after he left and so was running it when MJ got involved.

As I'm sure everyone knows, the album is stuffed with good stuff - Keep on Climbing's great - like Just Walk in My Shoes too (got spins at Wigan, but never stormed it).
