Chicago - Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? - from the Mecca I believe (Les Cokell loved this).
The MBs Another Day - rare as hell, but it really DOES sound like the sodding Merseybeats!

Is it something to do with where you stand to dance or is upfront the same as missionary? If so what's the doggy style scene like?

back in early 2000's a record like this was considered 'up front' Northern - not anymore really as it's now on a Kent CD as a classy rarity ;-)
Really? We all seemed to have a copy of this in the late mid 80s - it was part of the 'rhythm n soul' stuff we were into along with Big Daddy Rodgers, Henry Strogen (Misery), Billy Lamont (So Called Friend), Ronnie Forte and the like - didn't get played much and was easy to find (like BDR and RF) - but all my lot knew it down south.

Anyone mentioned Rufus Lumley's wonderful Stronger Than Me?

The Poets I've Got Two Hearts played? I don't know one way or another, but I'm surprised (the boss, who went, didn't know it when I got it).
A wondrous record either way.

Northern Soul was and is a very broad church that can only really be defined as 'records that were/are played at venues that label themselves northern soul clubs'... Within that wide range are an extensive selection of once big, but utter sh*te pieces of vinyl of all colours and creeds, but at some point enough people must've thought that every one of them was good enough/danceable enough to become popular - 'sh*te yesterday, sh*te today, sh*te tomorrow'.
The question is whether people are honest enough to admit a] their tastes change, b] we were all divs when we were young pups and c] it's easy to get swept up in the moment out on the floor, especially when you've necked half of Riker's monthly output.
As for Do I Love You - I can tell you for a fact that Frank was embarrased by it and thought his voice was appalling and the production crap, coz he told us personally when we were ferrying him up to Blackpool.

Don't think this chap has been mentioned (you could do a whole CD of the different vocals he's done to this tune)...

Purely by chance I was looking through a variety of old record boxes that I had stashed away (for future use) when I noticed some old cloth badges stuck onto the underside of the lid. Whether I hadn't noticed them before or had done and over time had simply forgotten all about them I don't know?
Was this Pendulum Soul Manchester cloth badge (approx 3.5" diameter) originally made whilst the club was still operating or was it a later type thing?
Derek
Strangely, when Pete's dad died and we were sorting out his box of old army cap badges, mess cutlery etc in the bottom of the box we found one of these patches - Pete can't remember ever owning it and always hated patches (maybe someone gave it him and he chucked it out but Norman snaffled it as he was a right hoarder when it came to things like old bearings, mercury switches, bits of clocks, radio valves - and evidently northern soul patches). Really? It didn't turn up until about 86 as far as I remember (was it not the 86 anniversary single - maybe even 87, I forget).

Dreadful record with excellent credentials...

"Smokey the bear would pull out all his hair if he could see this heart of mine"
For me about the best written set of lyrics is Joanna Garrett's 'Whole New Plan' - if you listen there's no repetition and it all rhymes beautifully with no filling.

He sings our love is in the pocket but there's a tear in the socket. Regards Fred
Isn't it 'Our love is in the pocket, right there, there in the socket' (ie it's locked in place) - I believe it's why Soussan wrote 'In the Socket' for Shallamar.

Gotta be Robert Parker's 'I Caught You In A Lie' - 'You said he was your cousin, but I found out that he wasn't'. Dx

When I was into northern in 74/75/76 I'd have probably said Dean Parish, Jimmy Radcliffe, California Montage and Tobi Legend in that order. Alex Lowes was our big DJ and he played all of these but sometimes an okay track called It's All Over by an artist I can't remember. Sometimes he'd play Go Now which was always disappointing.
When I started going back to northern nights during the eighties, Tobi Legend became my favourite ns record and probably still is. I started playing it in the middle of the night and I'm pleased to say others in the area have followed. I couldn't listen to Jimmy Radcliffe, I don't mind Dean Parish though it's a bit of a Snake, and I still love Young Holt.
I like the Drifter and love Timi Yuro.
I've never heard Get Out played last but I think that's brilliant.
I don't play any of the above but you'll have to come to Durhams Empty Shop, probably on the first Saturday in feb, to find out what I do play.
