Funny I wrote my dissertation on Mod, Skinhead and Northern Soul culture and was thought daft to do it (and suffered from the extreme lack of published material about back in 85/6 - about the only relevant book at the time was George Melly's tedious 'Revolt Into Style') - strange how youth culture is suddenly a legitimate target for academic study.

I get told off for listening to this one at home (too close to the knuckle for someone with my suicidal tendencies) but it doesn't get much more anti-valentine than this (defo the best version IMO)....

Ref-Kingy I did the initial one that he did as a giveaway for his birthday bash (and said he had rights for) - thereafter I had nothing to do with them.

The initial production in small numbers supposedly had the nod from Harry Weingler at Motown to be put out to DJs as they were at least initially (they certainly willingly initially gave him full access to the digitised tape vaults) to pre-promote the planned releases of the CDs of unissued stuff - though of course he did 'run with the ball' somewhat - though ultimately MUCH to our benefit.

As it happens I did the initial artwork for the birthday giveaway label as a favour to him. 

If i'm assuming right the 'others' you are referring to are the white labels - actually you're wrong - he got the blame for them but someone else did them (apart from the initial ones which he had official permission from Motown to do SOME in order 'to promote to DJs' ahead of the unissued CD comps) - I know exactly who but let's leave it there - don't forget without his running with the ball on the permission thing we would never have seen most of that stuff.

I believe that the Billboard 'Best Disco' label (so Kev told me) was based on claimed membership (200k+) and Billboard assuming that the members would all vote for their own club - had it been Troggs in Hull (yes there was one, with the same sparkly batcave decor as Pete tells me Farnworth had) with 210k membership the IT would have been awarded the world's best.

Chris Clark is just brilliant - blew me away when we got the CD compilation (never got hold of the Weed LP despite years of trying), I like that SouLutions though.

The shed loads of other all-time classic detroit stuff he co-wrote re much more exciting than TWPB.
